Receipt Printer Installation Guide This document was created to assist Operators in setting up the Receipt Printer for use with COMPanion Software.

What is the purpose of a Receipt Printer? The Receipt Printer provides a convenient and economical means of printing receipts for common circulation transactions such as checkouts, placed holds, fines, fees, payments, and refunds.

System Requirements A TCP/IP network with a static IPv4 address available for the printer. The Alexandria Librarian is supported in the 2 most recent versions of Safari, FireFox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Edge. If you are uncertain your system meets the current requirements please contact Customer Support at 1-800-347-4942.

Setting up the printer When unpacking, verify that you have received the printer, manual, AC Adapter, and a power cord.

Connecting the Ethernet Cable Connect an ethernet cable to the connector on the rear panel of the printer. You will need to supply an ethernet cable of appropriate length for your installation. One does not come with the printer.

Connecting the AC Adapter Connect the power cable to the AC adapter, then connect the AC adapter to the connector on the printer. With the power switch OFF, insert the power cable plug into a properly protected AC outlet. Note: Only use the adapter and cord that came with your printer.

Turning the Power On To turn on the printer, flip the power switch located on the left side of the printer. The POWER lamp on the control panel will light up.

Loading the Roll Paper Only use paper from COMPanion. Push the cover open lever, located on the top right hand side to open the printer cover. • While observing the direction of the roll (see diagram on inside of printer cover), set the paper roll into the compartment and pull the leading edge of the paper toward you. • Close the lid by pushing down on both sides and ensure it is firmly latched. • The error light will blink if paper nears its end or is incorrectly installed. Note: The paper is heat sensitive! Do not expose to heat, direct sunlight, or moisture while storing. Note: The error light will blink at different intervals for various errors, please see the printer users manual for an explanation of all error codes. • •

Summary of Installation Steps To use the Receipt Printer with Alexandria you will first need to follow several configuration steps. Once complete, the printer configuration will persist until your security certificates expire (if applicable) or your network configuration changes: • First you will need to configure the printer for access on your network. • Second, you will need to configure and install security certificates, if applicable. This is required for Cloud-Hosted as well as Self-Hosted when accessing Alexandria using a secure connection (https). • Finally, you will set your preferences in Alexandria so that the system knows how to locate your printer on the network.

Configuring the Printer Depress and hold the Feed button while turning on the printer. If the printer is already on then turn it off and back on while you depress and hold the Feed button. After a moment, a self test receipt will be generated showing the current IP address of the printer near the end. Go to this address in your browser and then log in by selecting System Access -> Login and entering the printers default credentials. The default Username is Root and the default password is Public (Image 1).

Image 1 After logging in select Network Configuration -> IP Parameters and configure a static IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. If you are unfamiliar with these you can obtain the required parameters from your Network Administrator (Image 2).

Secure Printer Connections using SSL/TLS Some installations, such as those using Cloud-Hosted, or those in Self-Hosted installations that connect to Alexandria securely (via https), will require that SSL/TLS be enabled to allow the printer and browser to communicate correctly. If this is not done, Alexandria will not be able to use your Receipt Printer. If you are not using this printer in an environment requiring secure connections you should skip ahead now to the section titled Setting Alexandria’s Preferences for your Printer, found on Page 14. When enabling SSL/TLS for the printer, COMPanion recommends that you generate and install a Self-Signed Certificate. Operation with a Self-Signed Certificate is free of charge and also makes configuring the printer possible when IT resources are limited. The caveat to using this type of certificate is that browsers will not trust it until they have been configured to do so. The steps for configuring your client machines, and the browsers installed on them, are detailed below in the section titled Installing the Self Signed Certificate on your Client Machine beginning on Page 6.

Configuration with a Self-Signed Certificate Begin by selecting SSL/TLS -> Create Self-Signed Certificate (Image 3).

Image 3 After completing the form with ALL required information, including the Static IP assigned to the printer, click on the Create button. Note that COMPanion recommends setting the Expiration Date in the FAR future (Such as 01/01/2030) so you do not have to regularly update the certificate by repeating these steps (Image 4).

Image 4 IG0350.6— Receipt Printer

The printer will generate a Self-Signed SSL certificate with confirmation (Image 5).

Image 5 Enable this certificate by selecting the SSL/TLS Setting button found under Network Configuration -> SSL/TLS (Image 6).

Image 6 Select to Enable SSL/TLS on TCP Port 443 with a Self-Signed Certificate (Image 7).

Image 7 After selecting the Submit button you will be presented with a SSL/TLS is accepted message (Image 8).

To complete the configuration, save the settings by selecting Save and clicking Execute. You will need to wait for the printer to restart after saving (Image 9).

Image 9 SSL/TLS is now enabled for your printer. You can verify this by navigating to the IP address or domain name of your printer in your browser using https://. However, unless you have already installed the certificate on the client machine, or added a security exception in your browser, you may receive errors that the certificate is untrusted or the site is unsafe (Image 10). Proceed to the section below to complete the configuration for SSL/TLS.

Installing the Self Signed Certificate on your Client Machine When using a Self -Signed Certificate you will need to download and install it in your machines certificate store or keychain in order for it to be trusted and usable by the browsers running on that machine. The procedure for this process can vary based on your specific machine type and local security policies. The general processes will be outlined below for both Microsoft and Macintosh systems. Microsoft Systems In the same location where you created the Self-Signed Certificate you will find an option to Download it. On any machine where you will be running the Alexandria Librarian, download the certificate and name it star.cer. The certificate you already created and installed is available for download even though the fields in the Self-Signed Certificate form will now be blank (Image 11).

Alternative Certificate Installation Methods You may chose to install your certificate only for a specific browser and not the entire machine. The procedure to do this varies for each browser and even browser version. The links below are provided as a reference if you are interested in more information. Chrome and ChromeBook Safari FireFox Internet Explorer

Setting Alexandria’s Preferences for your Printer From within the Alexandria Librarian, navigate to the Receipts Preferences found under Tools -> Management -> Circulation. Select Browser Settings. Place a check mark in the option to Use Star Receipt Printer and enter the IP address configured in the previous step (Image 28). If you are using a secure connection, be sure to specify the protocol as well. For example, https://192.168.3.101 You are now ready to use your Receipt Printer. Note: Alexandria must be registered for the receipt printer in order for the preferences to be available. This should be done for you automatically when you purchased the printer.
