Underwater or on Land - All Unmanned Over the last several years, the SMSS has participated in nine demonstrations with the U.S. Army and other governments. In fact, Don Nimblett, Lockheed Martin’s business development lead for unmanned ground vehicles, said a U.S. Army unit employed four SMSS vehicles for five months in Afghanistan, and they performed very well.

Imagine a large truck convoy hauling freight on the highway…without front seat drivers. Or, a small vehicle plumbing the ocean depths to inspect a deep-sea oil rig or cruising through an area to identify unseen hazards, while sailors remain in positions of safety. Not confined to the skies, unmanned ground and undersea capabilities are expanding the reach, safety and effectiveness of exploration and military missions around the world.

LAND BASED, GROUND-BREAKING Lockheed Martin developed the Squad Mission Support System—or SMSS—the largest unmanned vehicle ever deployed with U.S. ground forces. To lighten a soldier’s load, early entry and special operations forces can use it for transport and logistical support.

“We put the vehicles in the hands of operators in a real combat environment, and the platoon leaders lauded SMSS performance,” Nimblett said. Now, the focus is on expanding into the commercial market and increasing the vehicle’s autonomy, reliability and power—as well as improving software and

President’s Message By Bill Rivera

My wife, Linda, and I were among the dozen or so REALM members who took the Nashville Show trip on Sept 6-12, 2015. The itinerary kept everyone hopping. Nashville is truly the country music capital of the world. Visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame took us down memory lane. We were privileged to have lived and witnessed those country stars who made their name during the 50s, 60s and 70s. If I were to identify the most memorable part of the trip, it was attending the live show at the new Grand Ole Opry where Lee Greenwood brought down the house singing “God Bless the USA”. A great time was had by all. Our annual meeting, hosted by the Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control facility, was held on Tuesday, October 6th. We had a tremendous turnout of 124 members. Everyone enjoyed getting updated on the “health and status” of LM by Mr. Frank St. John, VP Orlando Operations & Tactical Missiles/ Combat Maneuver systems for LM M&FC Business

Area. Members also had the opportunity to reconnect with their long time colleagues and friends. The Science Center is undergoing major alterations and expansion which will cause some layout changes to the Lockheed Martin History exhibit, Glenn L. Martin M109 replica and M109 hands-on simulator. However, all this activity has not deterred Fred Curtis and his crew from working on a plan to renovate our Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter cockpit replica with its active flight simulator. The science competitions are also starting. They are the Curtis Kinetic Science Competition, the Science Challenge presented by Bright House Networks, the Dr. Ying Competition and the new K-4 Competition. Keep a look out in the upcoming newsletters for the times, place, schedules and POC for those who want to sign up and volunteer to be a judge for these events. Finally, REALM’s annual Christmas Party/ Luncheon is rapidly approaching. It will be hosted again by Jerry & Trudy Weiss and Bill & Marie St. Amour at the Errol Estates Country Club on Tuesday, December 8th. See the flyer in this newsletter. This is the last opportunity of the year for REALM members to connect and socialize with their friends and to get to know some of your REALM board members. What better way to close out the year ! Bill

Friends for Over 50 Years! Recently these four ladies met for lunch for a birthday celebration. They are Martiel Davis, Ardy Merrill (the Birthday Girl), Ann Hartle, and Phyllis Lupo. They have been friends and coworkers for over fifty years and they were loyal, devoted employees of Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin for a combined total of 140 years! All are keeping active since retiring and, of course, they are all members of REALM!

According to Nimblett, commercial prospects promise to be greater than the military market long term. “Commercial players are seeing a need for different variants,” said Nimblett. “Security services at fixed sites such as storage depots and nuclear plants hold great opportunities.”

Lockheed Martin developed the Marlin Autonomous Underwater Vehicle and the Remote MultiMission Vehicle (RMMV), two prime examples of advanced unmanned undersea applications. Originally designed for the military, and with great potential for civilian use, Marlin is an agile 10foot, 2,000-pound unmanned submarine equipped with sonar and sensors, including 3-D laser imaging. It offers a quick and safe way to conduct subsea surveys and inspections. Marlin can dramatically enhance underwater operations for the oil and gas industry by providing faster, safer and more efficient inspections in place of divers or tethered vehicles. It effectively extends the situational awareness of the undersea environment.

Another promising technology is the Autonomous Mobility Appliqué System—or AMAS—a multi-platform kit integrating low-cost sensors and control systems onto military vehicles to enable autonomous convoy operations. AMAS provides the ability to run autonomous convoys with trucks and other types of vehicles on highways and even in city traffic. “I’ve witnessed a nine-vehicle convoy without a driver in the lead truck on a closed-road situation,” said Nimblett. “The robotic vehicle as a commodity is going to explode here shortly as people are seeing the value. We need to keep advancing the capabilities and expanding our offerings to support customers such as firefighting, police, swift water recovery, search and rescue, and site security.”

SIGHT UNDER SEA

“Many new oil fields are in very deep water, about 8,000 feet and deeper, and it takes a long time to get a remotely operated vehicle overboard and down that far,” said Rich Holmberg, vice president of Mission and Unmanned Systems at Lockheed Martin. “In the future, our deep water autonomous vehicles will be field resident rather than ship resident, staying underwater for months to monitor the integrity of subsea oil field production systems.” The RMMV provides the future primary mine reconnaissance capability as part of the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship Mine Countermeasures Mission Package. It uses unmanned, off-board systems to detect and neutralize mines without endangering sailors or ships. “The RMMV can tow a sophisticated sonar looking for mines in the water column and along the bottom, and it can do that for up to 24 hours, even at over-the-horizon distances, then return to the ship,” said Holmberg. “It’s also significantly faster and much more cost effective than legacy manned minehunting systems.” As these unmanned ground and underwater systems continue to evolve, they will play a significant role in improving the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of military and commercial industry applications on land and undersea.

REALM Recreation September 2015 Bridge Results By Ila Clontz and Marvin Christiansen

September was a good bridge month and the end of the third quarter. We had four tables each Friday session and played nine rounds each time. John Lampe has the honor of having the highest quarterly score for the third quarter. There are some outstanding players among us who have been playing bridge since before and during their “Martin” years. Some of the players also play duplicate bridge and play several days a week. They are very gracious to those of us who are “party” bridge players. On the 25th Marvin and Norma Christensen bid a small slam. They were vulnerable and then made the slam which gave them a score of 2060! Also, same day Tony DiBerardino and John Lampe on their round made 1600, also a small slam!! It’s so nice to see face cards when you pick up the hand. Marvin and Norma were absent a couple sessions this month. They went on the REALM bus tour to Nashville, which they enjoyed. Loretta and

Bob Fiebrandt collected the tallies. Everyone in the group pitches in to help each other. Marvin also had his eye surgery from a previous injury with a good prognosis. The group is always there to support one another. During their absence we all missed Norma’s homemade cookies so it was double the pleasure to see them return. We welcomed back Winnie Suarez this month. She had quite a tale to tell about her $2048.99 water bill. As of this writing she has yet to see a credit on her bill. We are happy to have her joining us again. Also, Alan and Ruth Courney have not been able to play much this month due to an electrical fire in their home. The fire was pretty much contained to one room, but still a lot of damage done. Thank goodness they were and are okay!! We will soon be welcoming the Staschkes back from their summer home. Also, we hope to see some of our regulars return. Come and join the group, we always have something to talk about while we play and eat!

Retirees can still join fellow retiree golfers although the REALM golf group disbanded several years ago. Many retirees and other non-Lockheed Martin golfers have a weekly golf outing on Wednesdays in a group called Dusty’s Duffers. The Duffers have been in existence for more than 20 years and have had many LMC retirees as members. The Duffers have approximately 150 members and typically 70 to 100 members play each week. The Duffers play golf courses all over central Florida and usually pay less than $30 per round which includes free range balls. There is also an end-of-the-year tournament that includes a modified teamscramble, a free meal with door prizes and money awards for the lowest team scores. Dusty’s Duffers will start a “Hole in One” pot beginning in 2015. The $5 contribution from each paid member is included in the annual dues. Payoff is $1 for each paid member at the time of the hole-in-one. At the end of year tournament any remaining funds in the “Hole in One” pot will be added to the prize money for the tournament. The Duffers have four handicap groupings and each group has cash prizes for the lowest three net scores. There is also an optional skin contest for each grouping. A skin won means the player had the lowest score within his handicap group on a given hole after taking into account his handicap. For those who cannot play on Wednesdays, there is also a group that plays on Mondays. If you are interested in learning more about the Duffers, please contact Mike Smith at [email protected], 407-896-7743, to receive the user name and password to access the web site at http://www.dustysduffers.com. The website lists the schedule of courses to be played for the current year and also has a membership form. There is a $30 membership fee that is used to offset the cost of the year end party, “Hole in One” initial prize money, and to cover operational costs.

Where are they now ? Retirement Adventure By Thomas Barnes

kitchen and additional baggage transport. We met with the brave riders and caravanned to the official SEA TO SEA WEST starting point in Jasper. Each day of the ten day event followed a structured sequence: tent breakdown, loading of trailers, breakfast, make-your-own sandwiches for the road and leave camp by 7:00 am. We covered About 70 miles a day, finishing around 5:30 pm for dinner, camp set up and a 7 pm meeting to discuss plans and the next day’s riding conditions; lights out at 10 pm. The Rockies provided breath-taking views of mountains, glaciers, lakes, rivers, hot springs around every bend. We came across bears, wolves, buffalo, long horn sheep, deer, elk, moose and every sort of bird, from bald eagles to geese.

Retirement offer us opportunities we could not enjoy during our career building lives. One that I experienced was a 10 day trek from Jasper Alberta, Canada to Glacier National Park in Montana. My eldest son, Terry, lives in Michigan and works with SEA TO SEA, a charity that organizes long distance bike rides raising funds to end poverty. I have followed his accomplishments via his and fellow rider’s blogs for over ten years. The events have included everything from one day, one week and even a nine week cycling and camping excursion from Los Angeles to New York City. I volunteered to join one of his trips planned for July 29th to August 8th, 2015. My role as support and gear, SAG, was to drive a 12 passenger van with double-axle trailer through central Canada and the U.S. Rockies. Along with a nurse, we drove the daily route providing tools, pick-ups and medical care. During the 8-month preparation phase, Terry kept the riders and volunteers updated on progress and changing requirements. He advised that I “buff up” so that I would be able to load and unload the bikes and heavy duffel bags. I initiated an exercise plan three times weekly, under the direction of a physical therapist. As a result I lost ten pounds and improved my REALM bowling scores! July 23rd, I flew to Grand Rapids, MI and met my son to begin our adventure. We alternated driving the packed rig to Edmonton, Canada and offloaded into two other trailers, creating a mobile

Temperatures ranged from 37- 84 degrees Fahrenheit with only one evening of rain. The wildlife, scenery and fresh air were outstanding. But the most astonishing part of the trip was that no serious injuries or accidents affected our 55 member group. Once the ride was completed, Terry and I drove across Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin returning to Grand Rapids. Our final odometer reading was 5300 miles in the 19 days. My son and I were able to experience things together, that I would not have been possible during my thirty six years with Lockheed Martin and is just one of the riches that retirement has provided me. The video collage is available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37Vj0-82enQ) and SeatoSea.org.

Veteran’s Day - A True Hero Gone! By Rich Craig

Van T. Barfoot passed away March 2, 2012. Remember the guy who wouldn't take the flag pole down on his Virginia Property a while back? You might remember the news story several months ago about a crotchety old man in Virginia who defied his local Homeowners Association, and refused to take down the flag pole on his property along with the large American flag he flew on it. Now we learn who that old man was. On June 15, 1919, Van T. Barfoot was born in Edinburg, Texas. That probably didn't make news back then. But twenty-five years later, on May 23, 1944, near Carano, Italy, that same Van T. Barfoot, who had enlisted in 1940 in the U.S. Army, set out alone to flank German machine gun positions from which gunfire was raining down on his fellow soldiers. His advance took him through a minefield but having done so; he proceeded to single-handedly take out three enemy machine gun positions, returning with 17 prisoners of war. And if that weren't enough for a day's work, he later took on and destroyed three German tanks, sent to retake the machine gun positions. That probably didn't make much news either, given the scope of the war, but it did earn Van T. Barfoot, who retired as a Colonel after also serving in Korea and Vietnam, a welldeserved Congressional Medal of Honor.

What did make news...was his Neighborhood Association's quibble with how the 90-year-old Veteran chose to fly the American flag outside his suburban Virginia property. Seems the HOA rules said it was OK to fly a flag on a house-mounted bracket, but, for decorum, item such as Barfoot's 21 -foot flagpole was "unsuitable". Van Barfoot had been denied a permit for the pole, but erected it anyway and was facing Court action unless he agreed to take it down. Then the HOA story made national TV, and the Neighborhood Association rethought its position and agreed to indulge this aging hero who dwelt among them. "In the time I have left", he said to the Associated Press, "I plan to continue to fly the American flag without interference.", As well he should. And if any of his neighbors had taken a notion to contest him further, they might have done well to read his Medal of Honor citation first. Seems it indicates, Mr. Van Barfoot wasn't particularly good at backing down.
