REALIDADES- SYLLABUS- SPANISH LEVEL 3 RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR Course Title: Spanish 3 Common Core and State Standards of Learning :1,2,3,4,5 Instructor: Noemi Goodman Email: [email protected] Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Spanish 2 Materials Needed: Realidades -Textbook - Level 3 Writing,listening,reading,speaking activities ,Workbook- Notebook (2) Grammar/Vocabulary, worksheets,Smart Board interctive activities. General Course objectives: The goals of the Spanish classes are for students to develop the basic skills learning a new language, explore key issues, develop core concepts, and acquire knowledge of the Spanish language and culture through a variety of literacy skills, instructional tools and strategies such as thinking map devices, Course and Unit Organizers, Framing, Word Mapping, lesson plans, activities, resources, and teaching materials. Students must be able to understand specialized vocabulary, identify key pieces of information within texts and small readings, connect new information to prior knowledge, and synthesize the information to make it meaningful. Projects: There will be one/two project/s or enrichment activity/ies assigned. A two week notice will be given. These will be projects that will provide practice of learned skills and an opportunity to expand the student’s knowledge of hispanic cultural topics. Grades / Progress: A student’s overall grade will be composed of assessment in the following areas: Attendance and Participation in class

FORMATIVE: 40% Quizzes,listening, writing,reading and speaking activities,homework, and paricipation in class. SUMMATIVE: 60% Chapter and final tests, projects.

Homework will be assigned every other day and will always be due the next class meeting. Testing: Weekly quizzes will take place. They will assess vocabulary acquisition and structure skills. Chapter tests will take place after completion of each chapter. Chapter tests will be notified a week in advance. They will test reading and writing skills, and cultural knowledge introduced in the chapter. Course description: The textbook will be the most important tool, and it is therefore necessary that each student bring it to every class meeting. The key focus in each chapter of the textbook will be on the sections of Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. The section of communication will focus on oral language development. Talking,reading, interpreting and presenting information around a specific topic covering key situations where students would have to use Spanish ; the section of culture will introduce the student to the hispanic traditions and cultures, connections will let the students link topics and themes comparisons will focus on agrammar skills which aim at enabling coherent communication; the section of communities will let the students to apply knoledge in their communities. Finally, it will be important that each student browse through the handbook section at the end of the textbook. It has some helpful tips and resources that will definitely come in handy throughout the year! Our main focus in class will be to allow for oral and auditory language development, pronunciation will be modeled and in-class activities will require oral participation. Outside of class time, the student will be held responsible for studying new and previous vocabulary and for completing assigned practice exercises that will allow for application of structure skills presented in the chapter, aside from any other projects that may be assigned as homework Specific Course Objectives: Enable the student to communicate in oral and written Spanish.
