Ready to STAAR Guide Overview This manual only addresses the Ready to STAAR assessment. The purpose of this test is to measure your students’ conceptual knowledge and skills using the design attributes of the STAAR: focus, clarity and depth. This summative test will also help with the transition toward more rigorous test items.
Test Design The Ready to STAAR Assessment is criterion-referenced. The test results will not be used for students’ grade or teacher evaluations. The test items focus on the core areas for Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies. The test items were created in collaboration between Local Assessment and Teaching and Learning. o
Eligibility – Students should be enrolled in the corresponding grade of the test.
o
Test Length – Each test must be completed within a 3-hour testing period and in one sitting. Note: The actual STAAR time limit is 4 hours. Schools will stay within the 3-hour time limit for the practice experience and total number of test items.
o
Question Format – The test questions will be in a multiple-choice format. Math and Science tests may include free-response questions that must be computed and recorded on a freeresponse grid. Each test item has instructions that explain how to answer the question.
o
Academic Levels – No alternate or modified test versions are available. All Ready to STAAR tests are written on-level.
o
Testing Accommodations – Reference the students’ IEPs. Accommodations used routinely for daily instruction are acceptable for this test.
o
Start and Stop Times – The start time is recorded as when the Test Administrator instructs the class to begin. Breaks for the restroom, stretching, or minor medical needs do not stop the clock.
o
Testing Materials – Consumable test booklets and answer sheets will be shipped by request only. The test booklets are not scannable. Language Translations – Grades 3, 4 and 5 have Spanish for Reading and grade 5 Science. Large Print and Braille – Contact your Vision Services Specialist for Braille tests. Large print tests will be printed upon request.
o
Manipulatives – Grades 3, 4 and 6 have a ruler printed within the test booklets to answer questions related to measurements. Spring 2013 Test Administration

Test Administration Before the Testing Account for all testing materials that were shipped to your campus. Create a testing schedule for your campus. Locate alternate testing sites for small groups. Sort and distribute the student answer sheets to your teachers. Include extra blanks. Spend extra time to fill out the headers and answer sheets correctly. Decide how and when blank headers and answer sheets will be filled in. Plan activities for early finishers who complete their tests before the time limit. Explain your process for turning in testing materials upon completion. Fax in requests for additional tests, Spanish tests and large-print tests. (See p. 12).
During the Testing Practice active test monitoring and support teachers during the testing window. Remind students to bubble their answers onto the answer sheets. Ensure that your campus plans for cell phone use, lunches and bathroom breaks are followed correctly during the testing window. Remain aware of the 3-hour time for the testing window.
After the Testing Collect the headers, answer sheets and test booklets from your teachers. Double-check that all teachers turned in their scorables. Call the Service Center I at (972) 925-4430 to schedule an appointment to scan. Stack answer sheets under the correct header with all sheets facing the same direction.
