Construction Automotive Industry

Chemical structure RAU PVC 3000–9999 is manufactured from polyvinyl chloride, plasticizers and additives such as stabilizers, lubricants, etc. Characteristic properties Tough-elastic, leathery or rubber-like, depending upon the amount of plasticizer used; excellent aging resistance; properties variable within a wide range. Thermal properties Apart from its thermoplastic characteristics, the type and amount of plasticizer used are decisive. While a standard material type of medium hardness stays flexible down to approx. −10 °C, this range can be extended down to −40 °C by using special plasticizers. Very soft grades also show a more favorable performance. A general upper service temperature cannot be quoted. For uses at temperatures above +60 °C, our application engineering departments must be contacted in order to verify on the one hand the dimensional stability under heat, on the other hand the heat ageing and, if required, improve it by using special formulations. using special material formulations. Weathering and aging resistance Because of its chemical structure, RAU-PVC 3000–9999 possesses an excellent resistance to aging and is not attacked by oxygen or ozone. For continuous outdoor use special formulations are available containing stabilizers and pigments especially for the demand. Combustibility Over approx. Shore A 85 RAU-PVC 3000–9999 is flame retardant and self-extinguishing. The combustibility increases with the amount of plasticizers, however flame retardancy may be maintained by the use of special plasticizers or additives. Chemical resistance (also refer to Table 1) RAU-PVC 3000–9999 exhibits a good to very good resistance to a wide range of chemicals, in particular corrosive saline solutions but also to most acids and lyes. Prolonged contact with petrol, oils and greases may lead to plasticizer loss and thus to increased hardness, However, special resistant formulations are available. RAU-PVC 3000–9999 is not resistant to organic solvents of the ketone, ester, chlorinated hydrocarbon and aromatic hydrocarbon type.

Physiological properties For medical applications or for use in connection with foodstuffs, special non-toxic formulations are supplied that are tailored to the existing standards of directive 2002/72/EC. Colouring RAU PVC 3000–9999 can be supplied in practically any desired shade. Particular attention is drawn to RAL colours.

Bonding Numerous adhesives can be quoted on request, any of which will provide a good bond. Welding RAU-PVC 3000–9999 can be welded by means of simple thermal techniques (welding using welding wedge, nitrogen jet, high frequency). The quality of the weld is very high.

Recyclability RAU-PVC 3000–9999 is suitable for recycling and re-use in the manufacture of new products, just as any other thermoplastic polymer is in principle. If materials are sorted properly according to color and type, e.g. off-cuts from our customers after sawing and punching, then they can often be recycled and used in further production of the same article. Even old profiles that have given many years of service will retain most of their original properties, and depending on how clean the material is it can be recycled and used to make other products requiring low-, medium- or high-grade PVC.
