ABOUT US

The Sky Shades / SKY Span team perfected the tallest membrane façade – the first Seven Star Hotel in the world. onstructed the most imposing Tent City in Muna and fabricated one of the most futuristic airport awnings at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China. The Brisbane Cricket Ground and Munich Airport also feature among the credits …

Shapoorji Pallonji - over the past 140 years has built diverse civil and structural engineering masterpieces like factories, nuclear research establishments, nuclear waste handling, scientific and research establishments, stadia and auditoria, airports, hotels, hospitals, giant skyscrapers, housing complexes, townships, water treatment plants, roads, expressways, power plants and biotech facilities. SP is truly one of India’s great Companies…

SKYSHADES INDIA

Sky Shades India is a progressive, integrated company that focuses on the delivery of tension membrane fabrication products through a national distribution network. Sky Shades India specialises in the design, engineering and installation of high-tech, high quality shade structures for a comprehensive range of applications. Sky Shades India core business offerings consist of custom made product for hotels, restaurants, sporting stadiums, ampitheatres, shopping malls, car parks, theme parks, atriums, airports, office buildings, swimming pools and leisure parks. Sky Shades India as part of the global SKYShades network has a technology partnership with Organic Photo Voltaic thin plastic pioneer Konarka. The company is introducing OPV technology to its range of products by bonding Konarka’s Power Plastic thin film to its structures. This process which allows the conversion of solar energy into clean green electricity will position Sky Shades India as a market leader in the “clean, green, energy explosion” in the region. Sky Shades India has developed a unique tension membrane OPV panel which can be retro – fitted to produce renewable energy in almost any environment.

GMR

GMR is a progressive, integrated and innovative company that has set new standards for companies involved in urban infrastructure development. GMR have identified a number of possible applications for the tension membrane OPV panels some of which would be retro-fit and others custom made. GMR own the Hyderabad and Delhi airports both of which have large tracts of land within their precincts. This land cannot be developed in a traditional commercial manner. GMR have nominated the 2000 acre Phase 11 terminal and runway development at the Hyderabad airport as a possible site to create a world first OPV solar farm. GMR have requested that a concept plan and detailed cost / benefit analysis be developed for the proposed Pilot project. This follows – along with a synopsis of OPV technology and it’s benefits in comparison to traditional solar products.

SOLAR ENERGY

Those who study alternative energy sources, recognize that solar has many advantages over the other forms of renewable energy due to the fact that it does not have to be transmitted. Transmission systems are costly to install and much energy is lost through the process. ‘Wind’ and ‘geothermal’ methods of generating renewable energy suffer immensely from transmission costs. On the other hand, solar is capable of being used at the site where energy is required….no power lines, no transmission costs, no transmission loss. Why then has solar not been more widespread in its applications? .

CONVENTIONAL PV TECHNOLOGY In simple terms, traditional solar technologies have suffered from being; ¾ too expensive – hence the need for government rebates; ¾ too heavy to apply to large roofs – hence the need to reinforce existing roof structures; ¾ they are based on heavy metals - and, as with all metals, once they are exposed to the sun they create heat/thermal radiation which increases the ambient temperature. This subsequently demands more use of air-conditioning within premises and thus higher energy costs; ¾ the heavy metals used in the production of traditional solar cells – arsenic, cadmium and titanium are environmentally challenging and non-biodegradable, and anything but ‘green’.

ADVANTAGES OF OPV TENSION MEMBRANE ROOFING STRUCTURES ¾ Konarka purchased Polaroid’s New Bedford plant in May 2008 since their technology is based on actual films encapsulating nano-technology which uses chemicals, rather than conventional metal-based silicon/cadmium to convert light into electricity. Konarka now has the New Bedford plant in full production. ¾ Konarka’s panels are printed (newspaper style) from their large ‘printing presses and the production costs are expected to see product in the future closer to $1 per watt, rather than the average PV panels of $3-4 per watt; furthermore, SKYShades has developed a finance package for clients which will allow the leasing of both the solar panels and the membranes, thereby lowering the capital costs; ¾ These ‘thin film’ panels can be integrated onto SKYShades’ membranes or attached to aluminum frames and being lightweight there is no need to reinforce existing roofs to accommodate our solar membranes; ¾ The SKYShades / Konarka combined technologies are based on chemical-conversion of the sun’s energy, there is no thermal radiation concern….indeed, our designs are engineered so that the under-roof temperature of roofs will be lowered, and therefore reduce the need for airconditioning and thus produce further cost savings; ¾ The OPV panels are biodegradable, unlike traditional PV solar panels and can be identified as non-pollutant and of absolutely no threat to the environment…….a truly ‘green’ product.

GMR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAM Konarka has indicated that they expect their efficiency to grow by at least 30% pa for the first 5-6 years, and 20% over the following 5 years. Because of this, and SKYShades’ patented bonding systems, we offer to clients the benefit of this efficiency growth by replacing their OPV thin film panels every 3 years to enable them to double their electricity output……no other technology can do this. As a consequence of this the SKYShades’ OPV panels become cash-flow positive within 4-6 years, depending on local rebate/incentive schemes and the cost of electricity in the region. Performance degradation is forecast at 2% pa. So after 3 years the OPV panels still generate substantial power output. A secondary market for the leased panels can be created by GMR and the product used to benefit community school and housing programs implemented by the Group
