Resident Participates in J.T. Rutherford Fellowship By Esther Udoji, MD Fourth-year Resident This spring, I had the opportunity to participate in the J.T. Rutherford Fellowship named in honor of the American College of Radiology’s first lobbyist. This fellowship provides radiology residents with direct personal exposure to ACR government relations activities to facilitate an in-depth knowledge of state and federal legislative and regulatory processes. During my week in Washington, D.C., I experienced the positive effects of becoming and staying politically active. From left, Esther Udoji, MD, and residents from other medical specialties with

In our Capitol Hill visits, our primary focus was urging Congressman Steny “Whip” Hoyer (D-MD) members of Congress and their staff to enact H.R. 4015/S. 2000, the sustainable growth rate (SGR) repeal and the Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act. This important bill sought to repeal the antiquated SGR formula that subjects all physicians to severe annual cuts in reimbursement. We were successful in lobbying for inclusion of important radiology provisions mandating ordering physicians to consult appropriateness criteria developed by national medical specialty societies prior to referring Medicare patients for advanced diagnostic imaging services in the H.R. 4015/S. 2000 patch, a big victory! The Rutherford Fellowship has significantly enhanced my understanding of the governmental factors that impact the future of radiology.

Resident Attends ACR Meeting Second-year resident Allan Chiunda, MD, PhD, MPH, attended the ACR Annual Meeting and Chapter Leadership Conference 2014 in Washington, D.C. The meeting presented multiple opportunities for him to represent Cleveland Clinic and network with fellow residents as well as distinguished members of ACR, including Geraldine McGinty, MD (chair, ACR Commission on Economics); Kimberly Applegate, MD (ACR officer and council speaker) and Richard Duszak, Jr., MD (chief medical officer, Neiman Health Policy Institute).

Dr. Chiunda also watched our very own Mark Baker, MD (abdominal imaging), become a new fellow of the ACR! The meeting was topped off by visiting Capitol Hill to meet with our Ohio Representatives concerning key legislation that will impact the radiology specialty, including the sustainable growth rate (SGR) patch and low-dose CT lung cancer screening for high-risk patients.

Cleveland Clinic Launches Power of Every One Campaign Cleveland Clinic is embarking on the Power of Every One campaign, with goals to transform patient care, promote health, advance research and innovation, train caregivers, and revitalize the system’s facilities with new or renovated buildings for cancer, neurology, education and regional care. Titled the Power of Every One to signify the importance and impact of every gift, the campaign will culminate with the institution’s 100th anniversary in 2021. The Power of Every One is the most ambitious philanthropy campaign in Cleveland Clinic history and one of the largest ever among nonprofit academic medical centers. “As healthcare costs escalate and reimbursements decline, philanthropy is more crucial than ever,” said Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD. “The campaign will allow Cleveland Clinic to build on our commitment to innovation, to provide the means for sophisticated technology and world-class facilities, and to deliver the highest quality healthcare to more people in more places. It will make the difference between good care and great care.” The campaign is being co-chaired by Larry Pollock and Stewart Kohl. Norma Lerner is the campaign’s Distinguished Chair, and Robert E. Rich Jr., who chairs the board at Cleveland Clinic, is Emeritus Chair. Rich successfully led Cleveland Clinic’s previous philanthropy campaign — Today’s Innovations, Tomorrow’s Healthcare.

Cleveland Clinic and Akron General Sign Letter of Intent Cleveland Clinic and Akron General Health System have signed a letter of intent to enter into an arrangement in which Cleveland Clinic will invest in and become a minority owner of Akron General Health System, making Akron General its exclusive health system partner in Summit County. This transaction will combine the clinical expertise and resources of Cleveland Clinic and Akron General to strengthen and improve access to high-quality, affordable healthcare services for patients in the region.

Cleveland Clinic, HealthSpot to Expand Telehealth Capabilities with Walk-in Kiosks Cleveland Clinic and HealthSpot have entered into a letter of intent to form a joint venture that will offer patients convenient, alternative options to access healthcare through technology and HealthSpot’s virtual walk-in kiosks.

Both organizations are committed to the development of a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership that will grow over time.

HealthSpot® stations — private, 8-by-5foot enclosures outfitted with touch screens, integrated medical devices and videoconferencing capabilities — will enable Cleveland Clinic medical providers to see and treat patients in a variety of nontraditional healthcare settings, such as universities, employers and retail locations. An on-site accredited medical assistant will also support each station.

A key part of the relationship will bring the opportunity for physicians in Akron to participate in Cleveland Clinic’s Quality Alliance. The Quality Alliance enables collaboration between independent and employed physicians to improve quality of care, reduce costs and increase efficiency, and provide access to expertise, data and experience.

The HealthSpot station’s two-way high-definition video screen delivers a unique face-to-face experience between patients and medical providers. Digital medical devices embedded in each unit — stethoscope, scale, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, thermometer, otoscope and dermascope — stream medical information to the provider and patient in real time.

The two systems will also work together on other opportunities to improve care and services to the community.

Patients can conveniently walk up to a station without scheduling an appointment and be treated for minor, common health conditions, including colds and flu, rashes and skin conditions, eye conditions, earaches, sore throat, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections and seasonal allergies. HealthSpot station visits will fully integrate into a patient’s Cleveland Clinic electronic medical record, ensuring seamless communication and continuity of care.

As a provision of the agreement, Cleveland Clinic will make a substantial capital investment in Akron General Health System. In addition, the organizations will have representation on the other’s board. It was important to both organizations that there continue to be Akronbased governance and management leadership.

Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit Brought to City of Cleveland

Alumni Updates

In an effort to better help the 5,600 stroke patients hospitalized each year in Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Clinic has brought one of the first Mobile Stroke Units in the country to the city of Cleveland.

Stay Connected!

The goal of the Mobile Stroke Unit is to shorten the time between the onset of stroke-like symptoms and the delivery of thrombolytic drugs, which must be administered within three hours of when symptoms began or when the patient was last known to be well. The unit resembles an ambulance on the outside, but inside it houses highly specialized staff, equipment and medications strictly used for diagnosing and treating strokes. It is equipped with a portable CT scanner capable of imaging the patient’s brain to detect the type of stroke being experienced. The CT scans are wirelessly transmitted to Cleveland Clinic neuroradiologists, who decipher if the patient is experiencing a stroke, and if so, whether the stroke is ischemic or hemorrhagic. Meanwhile, stroke neurologists access the patient’s symptoms via telemedicine technology while en route to the hospital. A mobile lab is able to test blood samples on board. If it is found that the patient is experiencing an ischemic stroke — accounting for about 87 percent of all strokes — the on-board medical team can initiate intravenous tPA to attempt to break up the clot.
