All About Foam Basic, Open-cell foam has interconnected cells, so the foam is permeable to air, which can pass easily through it. Premium Saver, T-Foam™ (temper foam) has interconnected cells, but the passages connecting the cells are small, so air has a difficult time escaping if quickly squeezed. Under a low-force, sustained application, the air leaks out and T-Foam gradually conforms to the most complex shape. The engineering term is “viscoelastic,” or more commonly, “memory foam.” Viscoelastic foam is superior to ordinary open- or closed-cell foam for impact protection and pressure distribution. Deluxe, Closed-cell foam has isolated cells that are not connected to each other, so air cannot pass through. Closed-cell foam is waterproof, impermeable, and generally feels firmer than open-cell foam.
