Editorial Another month and things continue to get more interesting. As editor of this magazine I love the sport and am enjoying everything that has been happening since I took over. Since the last issue I’ve been over in Dublin, down in Newmarket, up in York, and discussed things with UK Athletics, Power of 10, the IAAF, the BASC, Gatorade and the European Press Database (amongst others), and found myself sitting next to Steve Cram and Jonathan Edwards in the media section at the World Trials. It’s been interesting hearing different views and opinions, and I’m spreading the word about race walking to whoever will listen… Apologies for the delay in getting this magazine out. Hundreds of emails and letters have been coming in, and many important issues have been raised - five boxes full! They will all be dealt with, and all results will be added to the website and magazine as I get through them. Please get results right before submitting them though, especially names and times, as I’ve been sent many corrections … After returning from a major event, I spent a week in bed with severe concussion when I fell down a flight of stairs. It seems that many people are suffering with health issues at the moment, so best wishes from me and I’m sure from all the readers to everyone suffering from heart problems, hernias, sciatica, breathing difficulties and other problems too. Get well soon! There are also more improvements to the magazine. It has grown again this month to 28 pages (from 24 last month and 20 the month before) and is now glossy throughout. And in response to questions… yes, the barcode is real. And thank you very much for all the support I have received from everyone so far!

News Berlin 2009

The walks (and marathon) at the World Championships of Athletics in Berlin are to be staged right in the city centre on a course that may take in the Brandenburg Gate. The organisers have also stated that they are anticipating crowds of up to one million people. 15th August 1pm, Men’s 20km 16th August 12pm, Women’s 20km RWR Parish Walk Special The first special publication by RWR has been a great success. The one-off Parish Walk Special magazine was available to order at the check in of this year’s race. Around 10% of the entrants ordered a copy. There were nearly 2,000 walkers and the magazine contained full results and several reports. Additionally, several pages promoting race walking, athletics clubs, and major walking events were included. The winner of the event for two years running looks likely

to now compete at Roubaix after reading about the race in the magazine. Feedback has been favourable from people who have read the special, and the Parish organisers have agreed that the souvenir edition can be produced annually. It is hoped that organisers of other major events could be encouraged to have a special edition, which could promote their event and encourage people to take up race walking. Famous Mystery Writer is Exwalker Lawrence Block is an acclaimed contemporary American crime writer and has written more than 60 novels. His new book “Step by Step” however details his love of race walking, and reveals that he was an active enthusiast of the sport for many years. The book, 365 pages long, details his training and races in various countries but the book finishes mid-stride, as he decided to quit race walking one day, a decision he regrets. Team withdrawal rumours When the outbreak of Mexican Swine Flu occurred, it was rumoured that the World Race Walking Cup to be held in Mexico next year could be

moved by the IAAF. Australia has also expressed concerns about security at the Commonwealth Games next year, after the bombings in Delhi. It is rumoured they may withdraw their walkers. Australia currently dominates the walks among the Commonwealth nations, and their absence would be an opportunity for surprise success by other countries. However, it would also be a shame for the fans and the athletes, who would prefer to go no matter what. Global events happen. The athletes that never got to go to the Moscow Olympics in 1980 due to events beyond their control regret it. Race Walking Record Subscriber numbers are continuing to grow steadily for the magazine. This has allowed the magazine to continue increasing in size, and go back to glossy pages. A higher number of introductory packs (which contain a copy of RWR) are also being requested from the RWA, showing that interest in our sport is on the increase. Magazine Archive plans Plans are underway for all 70 years worth of RWR back issues to be electronically archived and made available online at some point in the future. The covers of all of the magazines will be scanned in and placed on the website. This will be followed by an index of contents for each magazine. Finally, each magazine will be scanned and uploaded to the website. The older

magazines will be available free of charge to download, so that the full history of our sport will be available to everyone for research and curiosity purposes. Please note that this is being undertaken by the current editor JC, and NOT by anyone else. Anyone claiming to be raising funds for this purpose is not to be trusted! Chris Maddocks: Author Five times GB Olympian walker Chris Maddocks has nearly finished writing his first book. With a working title of “Money Walks” it is a semiautobiographical novel set in the year 2000 about a British race walker’s journey to qualify and compete at the Sydney Olympics. DQ for Winning in NZ Novice walker Quentin Rew celebrated winning the New Zealand National Championship 3,000m race walk with a forward roll across the finish line. (Official photo-finish shown above.) However, the judges disqualified him - not for losing contact but for "ungentlemanly conduct". Competing in his first serious race walk, he was caught by the urge to mark his victory. "The chief judge actually came up after the race and basically slapped the hand and said don't do that

again but it was fine for now. Then a couple of hours later I got called down and told someone had protested." he said. A manager from another team lodged a protest and he was disqualified, despite finishing more than a minute ahead of the second-placed walker. Quentin was a successful middledistance runner but quit running because of Achilles problems and switched to walking. He was back two days after his disqualification to win the 20km walk title by 10 minutes and 10 seconds, and this time with a more conventional celebration. He says he's not upset and hasn't protested the judge's decision, calling it "all a bit of a laugh" and intends to return to the nationals next year. Thanks to Colin Vesty for this story 100 miles on a fractured foot

in five days across the Sahara desert in this gruelling event, finishing 344th overall and impressing the runners and organisers. The event has been held since 1986 in Southern Morocco. This year the event was unusually shortened to five days from six, as the desert had flooded from heavy rains. World success for RWR writer Pat Reeves - our popular nutritionist, has had some recent success in competition. She competed at bench-press and deadlifting in the World Power-Lifting Drug-Free Association's European singles event in Bourbon-Lancy, France and created a new age/weight category bench press record there. She was also successful in winning the deadlift event.

Olly Browne completed the 100-mile race walk at Newmarket despite fracturing his foot ten miles in. “I didn’t realise I had fractured my foot until afterwards,” he said. Reports and results of the 100 miles will be in the next issue. Marathon des Sables

Ian Richards was one of 770 people who completed this years Marathon des Sables. (Translation: Marathon of the Sands.) He race walked five marathons

Also, in Dusseldorf, Germany at their first-ever German National event she was asked to guest-lift., twice increasing her bench-press world record and equalling her dead-lift record to win both events. However, she did this suffering with a serious back/leg injury - two broken vertebrae and a torn rotatorcuff and bicep, which is limiting her true potential..!

Announcements LICC Clarification The London Inter-Club Challenge meeting walk on 29th August at Barnet Copthall is at 12 noon over 3,000 metres, with a YAG race of 1,000 metres. BMAF 10k It has been confirmed that the BMAF 10k will be held on Saturday 5th September in Leicester. This date clashes with the Midland Vets Final in Stafford. Walkers have twice before done both, rushing from Abbey Park to

Nuneaton and Birmingham, but Stafford might be a bit too far this year at 60 miles and 90 minutes from Leicester. While Midlanders contemplate what to do, Southerners breathe a sigh of relief as the SCVAC Championships are the next day, which was an alternative date for the 10k. Wikipedia The popular online encyclopaedia (7th most poplar website in the world) used by 10% of all the people in world has now added the Race

Walking Association and Race Walking Record to its pages. The entries will be expanded and new entries added over time to increase general understanding and exposure of our sport. Club Closes Castle Point AC in Essex has been wound-up due to money difficulties. They are added to the long list of athletics clubs that have disappeared over the years.

Dunwoody does it! At 2.20pm on Friday 10th July, Richard Dunwoody completed his '1000 Mile Challenge' having walked day and night for 42 days one mile every hour for 1000 consecutive hours. He was joined for the last mile by racing legend Lester Piggott and together they passed the winning post in front of packed stands on Newmarket Racecourse. (Pictured)

Captain Barclay originally undertook the challenge for a 1000 Guineas bet exactly 200 years before. Richard completed the challenge to raise money for four charities - Racing Welfare, the Alzheimer's Society, Sparks and Spinal Research. The challenge has so far raised in excess of £100,000. Richard said: "I undertook this challenge to raise as much money as I could for the charities but I had absolutely no idea that I would receive this level of support. It's been great that so many people have got involved and I have been both humbled and inspired by this. It is an experience I shall never forget, although I'm looking forward to getting a little bit of sleep now!"

EAA Announcement Following the decision of the European Athletics Council in October 2008 in Berlin to appoint one female member to the Cross Country, Race Walking and Mountain Running Commissions, the Council approved the recommendations of the Executive Committee and duly appointed Celia Mendes (POR), Anne Fröberg (FIN) and Anna Pichrtova (CZE) to the respective commissions. BMAF AGM New appointments have been made to the BMAF committee, who are walker friendly and have even helped out on the walkers feeding station at events.

been a turning point, where we can now move forward revitalised, with you all now as the visible and vocal driving force behind the TEAM, where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. You have given us the mandate to push our cause on all fronts, where we will not accept being dismissed as being irrelevant, because although we have been part of the glorious past, the role a vast majority of you have at the grass roots of ATHLETICS, makes us also vital for its future. “Can we achieve our destiny? To again borrow a phrase, this time from very recent history, about the dismissed and the alleged irrelevant: YES WE CAN and I [STILL] HAVE A DREAM. So watch this space.”

Should Sprinters switch to race walking?

A Letter from Maurice Doogan

The 16-year-old achieved the best result for her country in the history of the World Youth Championships when she overtook Russia’s Svetlana Vasilyeva in the very last strides of the girls’ 5000m race walk final to finish second.

“To say that I was staggered by the turnout at the AGM last Saturday evening would be an understatement. I must therefore apologise for ever doubting your commitment to the Masters Athletics cause, to those in attendance and the dozens of e-mails from those not going to Birmingham, vouching support for the Team. To say this is a Watershed would belittle what I now believe will have

Yanelli Caballero of Mexico finished second in the 5000m Race Walk final at the IAAF World Youth Championships at Bressanone, turning from a sprinter to a race walk medallist in one year.

Caballero made her mark as the first ever Mexican girl on a World Youth podium and the highest score for her country in an event which is

traditionally strong and popular in the Central American country. Unlike her Russian counterparts Vasilyeva and eventual winner Elena Lashmanova who set off to a suicidal pace from the gun, the diminutive Mexican adopted a more conservative tactic remaining discreet in the chasing pack for the first third of the race. “I just started at my own rhythm,” she explains after a well deserved lap of honour and her shoulders draped in a Mexican flag. “I upped the tempo gradually and made ground little by little. I grabbed seconds one by one until making up to one minute on the leaders. In the last kilometre, that’s when I really went for it.” Caballero reveals that she turned to race walking only one year ago when a talent scouting was organised in her school in Mexico City. A former sprinter

she was one of athletes selected for the race walking camp because she recalls “I had potential. They came to my school to recruit race walkers and I was selected with 6 others. They took me away from the sprints and taught me everything from scratch. They corrected everything from my back posture, my feet, my knees… I remember walking over a straight line for hours on end.” Following her silver medal winning effort Caballero declared herself “extremely happy” and does not regret switching from the sprinting events. Seeing how she managed to catch up with Vasilyeva in the very last strides of today’s 5000m to move from bronze to silver medal position it may well be that her past experience as a sprinter was what made the difference in the end! Features The Value of Carbohydrate Loading

to low levels. This can lead to early fatigue - and thus being passed by someone's grandmother!

By Pat Reeves Performance of intense endurance exercise is mostly fuelled by a combination of stored carbohydrate which equates to glycogen in the liver and muscles - and stored fat triglycerides in the muscles and adipose tissues. Though fat-burning can significantly contribute to an endurance athlete's fuel needs, there are specific reasons why fat is not the most fuel-efficient source of energy as befits this type of intense activity and energy output. Firstly, the rate of fat metabolism is slow compared to the rate of carbohydrate metabolism. Therefore, during intense exercise, when the body demands a quick provision of energy, fat metabolism cannot provide that energy sufficiently quickly - and hence the body must slow down. Secondly, metabolising fat is more oxygen costly than metabolising carbohydrate; making fat metabolism more inefficient than that of carbohydrate. I hope that I have explained that well enough to clarify the fact that without adequate carbohydrates in and available to the body, the endurance athlete will likely suffer at the hands of the 'infamous bank'. Since the body's carbohydrate stores are limited (a 70kg individual may store approximately 400 grams of carbohydrate throughout the liver and musculature), endurance events lasting greater than ninety minutes may deplete muscle glycogen

Since the carbohydrates in the body are consumed preferentially to fats, and are utilised rapidly during intense exercise, it follows that any attempt to increase the body's carbohydrate stores during longer duration events may help with performance. One such attempt to try to boost the body's glycogen stores is the prerace carbohydrate loading scheme. By following a carbohydrate loading protocol as such, carbohydrate stores can increase significantly sometimes by up to a hundred percent more! - thus providing greater fuel for the latter portion of the event. So, if you are about to compete in long duration endurance events, you owe it to yourself to give carbohydrate loading a chance. How to carbohydrate load? Over the years there have been several proposed carbohydrate loading schemes. Originally, such schemes were based on the fact that following an extremely low carbohydrate diet (
