COMPETITION RULES NEW Rules 2016: You can find the official rules and regulations governing all IRONMAN events here: www.ironman.com/rules-and-regulations 1.

For IRONMAN 70.3 and IRONMAN events, the age-group draft zone will increase from 10 meters to 12 meters. The draft zone will continue to be defined as a distance (12 meters) from the leading edge of the front wheel, extending towards the rear of the bike (front wheel to front wheel) and all athletes will have 25 seconds to make a pass. This means that professional and age group athletes will now both follow the same drafting rules.

2.

For IIRONMAN 70.3 and IRONMAN events, sleeves that extend from shoulder to elbow may now be worn during non-wetsuit swims.

3.

The accumulation of three blue cards (drafting and intentional littering) will result in disqualification. Yellow cards will no longer count as a “strike” (penalty counting towards disqualification), but athletes may still be disqualified should the Head Referee consider the accumulation of yellow cards to be in violation of IRONMAN Competition Rule 3.03(b)

Please note that rules may change slightly per event. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules published in the race briefing. Especially for IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt 2016: If an athlete is involved in an accident during the event, it is obligatory for the athlete to stay there and wait until the accident is recorded at least by the protocol of an race official or the police. If the athlete continues the race after being involved in the accident he or she could be charged for ´leaving the scene of an accident´. Furthermore it is prohibited to pollute the road surface. Pollution in this case means also coloring or branding the tarmac. Infringement leads to prosecution by the police.

On our homepage we created a Swim Smart Top 10 Checklist for you to support you with your race preparations.

If you are involved in an accident: Athlete – Spectator: The police must be called! You have to stay until the police has arrived! Athlete – Athlete: Communicate with each other, whether both of you can continue. If not, both athletes have to stay until the police arrive.

Important Note!: IRONMAN does not allow athletes to transfer his or her registration to another person. This will result in a disqualification and potential suspension of future IRONMAN events. If an athlete has to stop the race and quit, he has to inform a referee, officials or stop by the information point at the Transition Area!
