I was raped by my brother, woman reveals By Licia Selepe A 28-year-old woman from Muhlava Cross revealed that she was raped by her brother. This revelation was made to the Tzaneen Cluster police commander, Major General Maggy Mathebula during the Anti-Rape door to door campaign at Muhlava Cross Village last Wednesday. When Mathebula and her entourage entered the woman's home and started speaking to her about rape, the woman started to cry before retelling her horrific tale. The woman alleged that her 38-year-old brother repeatedly raped her for years. She never reported the matter to the police and the brother has since passed away. Tzaneen Cluster police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said it is unfortunate that the woman never reported the incident to the police. 'We will arrange counseling for the victim,' said Ngoepe. After the door to door campaign, the police and a number speakers addressed community members at A.F.M Church in the village. Mathebula urged mothers to look after their children and stop leaving their little girls with uncles. 'These days you cannot trust the uncles and grandfathers to baby-sit your little girl while

you are not around. 'Real men do not rape. All men must stand against abuse and join us in the fight against rape and abuse,' said Mathebula. A prosecutor, Masilo Mmola strongly called on community members to stop withdrawing rape cases. 'Our people are withdrawing cases especially if relatives are involved. When people withdraw the cases and the rapists end up walking free, this makes the community doubt the justice system,' Mmola said. He urged rape victims to come out and break the silence. 'Give the police the necessary information and let the justice prevail,' said Mmola. Meanwhile, the provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said HIV infected rapists might face charges of attempted murder and murder in accordance with the provision of the Sexual Offenses Act no 32 of 2007 as amended. 'All rape suspects will be subjected to an HIV test and if the results come back positive a charge of attempted murder will be added on top of the original rape charge. A murder charge will be imposed if the victim dies as a result of the Aids virus transmitted to the victim by the rapist,' said Brig Mulaudzi. Tzaneen Cluster Police commander, Major General Maggy Mathebula speaking during the AntiRape Campaign at Muhlava Cross last Wednesday.

Toddler raped while mother calls for help By Licia Selepe A two-year-old girl was raped at Pulaneng Village in the Maake area in the early hours of Friday. This, after her mother left her sleeping to call

for help, when she heard a noise outside the window. According to Maake police spokesperson, Constable Mpho Seroto, an unknown suspect entered the house through the window and raped the girl.

When the mother returned with community members they found that the child had been raped and the suspect was no where to be found. Maake Police Social Crime Prevention unit has since visited the village over the weekend

to raise awareness about rape. Seroto said the police are on the ground searching for the suspect and urged the public to help police arrest the suspect. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Maake police on 015 355 8357/8.

Stolen items worth R8 000 recovered Police recovered stolen items worth over R8 000 during the arrest of a burglary suspect at Nwajaheni Village in Nwamitwa on Saturday. According to Letsitele police spokesperson, Constable Reoh Mabunda, the 26-year-old suspect began his burglary spree two years ago. 'The suspect is linked to several cases of

burglaries that occurred between 2011 and 2012,' said Mubunda. During the arrest police recovered stolen items which include TV, sound system, speakers, DVD player and plastic food containers. The suspect was expected to appear before the Ritavi Magistrate's Court at the time of going to press.

Rapist sentenced to life A 35-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison by the Naphuno Regional Court on Thursday for raping an 18-year-old woman. The rapist, Charles Seroto from Serare Village in the Maake area accosted the victim on her way to home in April last year, dragged her into the bushes and raped her. Maake police spokesperson, Constable Mpho Seroto urged community members es-

pecially women and children to avoid walking around the streets at night. 'We also appeal to the public to stop hitchhiking at night at the hiking spot in Maake Plaza to avoid being raped and robbed. Motorists must stop offering lifts to strangers as they end up being hijacked and killed,' said Seroto.

Anti-Rape Campaign launched The Tzaneen Cluster police launched the Anti-Rape campaign last Wednesday in the Rativi policing area. The increasing number of rapes in the Tzaneen area has prompted the police to initiate the campaign, which runs from February to June, as it was identified as a flash point provincially in-terms of high number of rapes. The Tzaneen Cluster has recorded more than 28 cases of rape in January alone. The campaign targets schools and villages which are mostly affected by rape. The campaign was launched at Matlharhi High School and Mpumulani High School in Muhlava Cross where police led by the Tzaneen

Cluster police commander, Major General Maggy Mathebula educated the learners about rape and how to avoid being raped. Mathebula urged the learners to stop going to liquor outlets especially at night as they become easy targets to rapists. 'Stop walking around the streets at night. Most rape victims are raped at night when coming from liquor outlets,' said Mathebula. The campaign program will continue as follows: February 27: Ramatau High School and Nareng High in Metz, Maake area. March 6: Mokhapa High and Mahlane High School at Lephepane, Ritavi area. Struggle icon spent time in Lenyenye Dr Mamphela Ramphele, the leader of the newly formed political platform, Agang SA, spent about eight years in Lenyenye outside Tzaneen during the apartheid era. The 65-year-old Polokwane born, Dr Mamphela Aletta Ramphele, was issued with banning orders for her anti-apartheid movements and banished to Tzaneen from April 1977 to 1984. Alone in a strange place, she turned to a church for help. A Father Mooney arranged for her to live with two African nuns at Tickeyline. ‘They threw me out into Tzaneen, but I did not give up. I looked for allies and found the Catholic Church which gave me a room at the

back and I started a clinic,’ she reflected in an interview. She later set up home in Lenyenye where she was under constant security police surveillance. She formed the Ithuseng Community Health Programme with money from the Black Community Programmes (BCP). She started empowering women, encouraging them to establish vegetable gardens among other initiatives. During her time in Tzaneen she was barred from attending any gatherings, which included treating a patient in the presence of their relatives. And she was, on paper, prevented from

leaving the magisterial district of Lenyenye. Ramphele left Lenyenye in 1984 to go to Port Elizabeth where she was offered a job at Livingstone Hospital. Dr Ramphele is a medical doctor, an academic and a successful businesswoman. She was a close friend of Steve Biko, with whom she had two children. She is a former managing director at the World Bank and a onetime Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Town. On Monday she announced the formation of a new political party, named "Agang" (Sotho for ‘Build’), intended to challenge the African National Congress.

Schools get mobile libraries To improve quality of education in public schools, Nedbank donated two mobile libraries, each worth R80 000, to Modubatse High School and William Kgatla Primary School at Kgapane on Friday. The libraries were donated as part of the Nedbank Mobile Library project, which was launched in 2009 due to the persisting challenges faced by some of the country's disadvantaged schools in accessing basic facilities, including reference material. Nedbank's business manager, Marcia Mathsa, said they believe that the creation of a knowledge-based economy is critical to the future growth of the country.

'Our approach is that meaningful and practical interventions are necessary in addressing some of the challenges, which hinder the progress of disadvantaged learners,' said Mathsa. The mayor of Greater Letaba Muncipality, Councillor City Modjadji thanked Nedbank for donating the libraries saying the libraries will go a long way in improving the standard of learning and teaching in the two schools. Principal of Modubatse, Solomon Raseropo and William Kgatla Primary School's principal Peter Rasekgololo thanked Nedbank and promised to look after the libraries with extra care.

Praise for matric results improvement The teachers and learners of Mopye High School in Bolobedu South highly praised local businessman on Friday for playing a significant role in improving the school's matric results. Herman Maloko donated money to pay teachers who gave extra lessons to Grade 12 learners during the weekends in the Bolobedu South area. Mopye High School, one of the former worst performing schools in the area improved from 28% in 2011 to 48% in 2012 matric results. The principal of Mopye High School, Malekutu Molewa and Motupa Circuit manager, Lawrence Makgato thanked Maloko for generous contribution

towards the improvement of the school's matric results. Maloko said he donated money to the circuit to help Grade 12 learners because it pains him to see some learners repeating Grade 12, some up to three times. 'I am glad that my money did not go into waste and I would have been disappointed if nothing good came out of it. It's always a pleasure making a different in the community,' said Maloko. Maloko called upon other business people to follow suit so that more schools could benefit. Maloko plans to continue funding weekend extra lesson. The current Grade 12 learners pledged to work hard and put their school on top.

DETERMINED: Grade 12 learners of Mopye High School pledged to work hard and put their school on top.

Consent needed for under 21 initiation MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Motupa Circuit manager, Lawrence Makgato, Herman Maloko and the principal of Mopye High School, Malekutu Molewa during the visit to the school.

The initiation of young men under the age of 21 years without parents or guardians' consent will soon become a criminal offence. This according to the proposed Initiation School Repeal Bill recently discussed at the meeting held by the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) officials, senior traditional leaders and some headmen in the province. The bill also seeks to criminalize the snooping into an initiation school

by those who are not initiation school graduates, regulation of the admission fee for the initiation school by the MEC for CoGHSTA, Clifford Motsepe in consultation with senior traditional leaders. The local houses of traditional leaders must establish committees to assist the provincial house in recommending applications for initiation schools, which must be approved or disapproved by the department. The closing date for applications

for initiation school operating permits this winter is February 28. All applications must be submitted to all five districts in the province. According to the Deputy Chairperson of Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders Hosi Erick Chauke, the provincial department of CoGHSTA will later conduct the initiation school compulsory workshop for all senior traditional leaders in an effort to reduce death rate at the initiation school.

VICTORIUS: Blue Rocks beat Ray Pillers FC 2-0 at Nkowankowa Stadium on Sunday.

Golden Aces win KLG Top 8 The resilient outfit of Golden Aces were crowned the champions of the Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) Top 8 Soccer Challenge after beating the tough side of Royal Celtic 5-3 on penalties at Lephepane ground at the weekend. The game was watched by thousands of football fanatics from various settlements in the Khujwana, Lephepane, Mosoroni, Moime, Thlabine and Rakoma areas who descended on the sports facility to witness history being made. The match started at a blistering pace with either side gunning for an early lead. It was, however, Royal Celtic who had an upper hand as they clearly dominated Aces in all areas, with Celtic's livewire Matome 'Viper' Maowasha being the main menace. It was

therefore not unexpected when he netted Royal Celtic's first goal in the 22nd minute to send the crowd into a rupture. Golden Aces levelled the score-line in the 39th minute via a highly-schooled shot from the troublesome Peter 'Satan' Phakula. At interval the scoreboard read 1-1. The two sides upped their game in the second stanza in search of a winner. Viper again relentlessly tormented the Aces defence line of Actor Machetela and Joseph 'Pule' Letsoalo until they cracked in the 75th minute. He used the space generously given to him to unleash a terrific shot to give his side a 2-1 lead. Royal Celtic players, especially the captain Vincent Makgoba seemed to lose focus on the game and started concentrating more on the

personality of the referee. Their defence line and goalkeeper started being casual and remonstrating with the referee. This earned them two red cards which saw Makgoba and Bankhaya Moagi given marching orders by the referee, Merafi Maponya. Aces capitalised from this situation and netted a late equaliser in the 89th minute to push the match to a penalty shoot-out. In the end, Golden Aces won by 5-3 after two Celtic players missed from the dreaded spot kick. Though his team fell, the panel of adjudicators gave Matome 'Viper' Maowasha the 'Player of the tournament' award, whereas Modhaka Maponya of Golden Aces got the 'Goalkeeper of the tournament' award.
