Young SU researcher receives P rating

Dit is ’n redelike lukrake groep, maar that is the beauty of it,” voeg Sass by.

Dr cang Hui, a postdoctoral associate at the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology of Stellenbosch University (SU), recently received a P rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF). Hui, a member of the University’s DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology, combines mathematics and ecology to research the trends of European starlings, Argentine ants and other invasive species. According to the NRF, a P rating is usually awarded to young

researchers who have displayed great potential in their published postdoctoral work and research outputs. Hui, who describes himself as a mathematical ecologist, started his career at SU in 2004. He holds a MSc in Applied Mathematics and a PhD in Ecology from Lanzhou University in China. Mathematical ecology is regarded as a rare skill in South Africa and has become an important tool in ecology and conservation management. – Robert Kaden

Pesticides sprayed near residences cause upset

TATIB takes on pesticides

INTERCAMPUS INTERKampus – Zanie Maree

C

oncerns about pesticides’ being sprayed near Stellenbosch University (SU) residences have recently been raised by an organisation on campus. The Air That I Breathe Foundation (TATIB) claims that “during the past couple of years, we have received a large number of complaints of spray drift from the residents of Stellenbosch”. This foundation’s blog describes TATIB as a platform from which the people living in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas can campaign against the harmful effects of exposure to potentially toxic spray drift. Mr Jurgen Schirmacher, chairperson: TATIB Foundation, claims, “It all started with the STIAS vineyard, which is close to some of the ladies’ residences. “Welgevallen is also a problem as we have heard complaints from residents that they have been caught in spray drift en route to the university”. According to the TATIB blog, the foundation has investigated these complaints and has ample evidence that show large clouds of potentially toxic spray drift being blown into the residential areas. “We have had meetings with staff members of SU.

“Initially things went well, and then they bowed to political pressure and told us to take a hike,” says Schirmacher. He maintains that the parties involved are prepared to continue using the pesticides. “SU Management seem unwilling to stop poisoning their students,” Schirmacher adds. In response to TATIB’s allegations, mr Michael-John Freeborough, Faculty Manager: AgriSciences, said, “The faculty has carefully evaluated its

“SU Management seem unwilling to stop poisoning their students” vineyard management protocols and SU abides by all existing legislation as issued in government law”. Freeborough also mentioned that “the STIAS vineyard was not subject to any agricultural remedy during 2010 and all efforts have been made to handle this vineyard in the most environmentally friendly way possible”. Freeborough added that all management practices are undertaken in consultation with stakeholders. “SU assures all its students and

residents in the vicinity of its vineyards that their health and welfare is of critical importance,” he said. “With regards to the Welgevallen experimental farm vineyards, all vineyards are managed in accordance with the Integrated Production of Wine principles and policy, using only green code registered remedies. “The department is currently implementing GlobalGAP certification, which abides by strict guidelines for pesticide and herbicide use over and above current legislation.” According to TATIB’s blog, the foundation had a meeting with Stellenbosch Municipal officials on 24 January. Mr Basil Davidson, Stellenbosch Municipality Official, refused to continue with the meeting after finding out that journalists were present. The TATIB blog states that the reason given was that the “meeting was going to be of a technical and exploratory nature” and that it was not in their “policy to have the media present”. The blog states that “clearly [the municipality] does not want to conduct their business in an open and transparent manner. “This leads us to suspect that they have something to hide”. Mr David Daniels, manager: Stellenbosch Municipality, did not respond to any correspondence.

Upset surrounding Inetkey tariffs

Petition demands cheaper internet Zanie Maree

A

recent petition complaining about high Inetkey tariffs has been doing the rounds on campus. This petition was started by two engineering students, Francois Wessels and Richard Hamman. Wessels explains that they started the petition after realising that “they would be better off using alternate internet service providers”. He identifies the core problem as the fact that the internet is crucial to academic work. A new trend has started where students rather make use of internet service providers such as Cell C, with internet rates as low as 5c/MB any time of the day. Even “academic departments are making use of ADSL lines rather than using Stellenbosch University (SU) internet services”. Two of these departments are the Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering Departments. Wessels says some Stellenbosch University (SU) staff even wait to use the internet at their homes, where it is less expensive. According to Wessels, SU Information Technology (IT) is aware of the problem, but nothing has been

Deur: Zanie Maree

done. “The petition was started to highlight the urgency of this situation in an attempt to spur action,” he adds. The petition was released on 7 February. The petition already has 600 signatures. The petition states that they hope to reach a target of 7 500 signatures. “We think that we may be aiming for the stars to some extent. We hope to get at least 2 500 signatures,” Wessels said. “The tendency to effectively boycott SU IT will only make an already bad situation even worse. Providing internet access is very expensive and the only way to drive down the cost per megabyte is to get more people to make use of the service,” he adds. Due to the fact that students and staff are now making use of other internet service providers, an excess internet capacity is created. This is undesirable. The petition claims that the internet is a “basic requirement for academic work” and therefore the cheapest and fastest internet access should be made available to students. Students are encouraged to use Inetkey to ensure that the costs will be divided among a bigger group of people. The creators also demand that the costs of providing the internet service should be released annually.

PROTEST PICNIC IN THE PARK A protest picnic was held in the SU Botanical Gardens on 6 February after the Garden had put up a notice that no drinks and food are allowed to be enjoyed in the gardens. The notice specifies that only food bought at the restaurant will be tolerated. A group of 50, including students and members of the public, protested against this rule. The protest was organised by two former SRC members, Gerhard Wiese and Cara Meintjies. They feel that students, especially PSO students, should be free to enjoy their lunch in the Botanical Gardens. Wiese mentioned that the restaurant in the Botanical Gardens, Katjiepiering, does not cater for a student budget. He emphasised that the group is not proposing a boycot of the restaurant. Wiese explained that they were not met with any resistance and that they would continue to have their picnics in the Botanical Gardens. Photo: EDWARD DUCKITT

Let us worry about your financial planning.

As a self-employed or employed degreed professional individual, you have a very specific set of financial needs. Cobalt Solutions for Professionals is a comprehensive range of solutions for wealth creation and risk management on both a business and personal level.

Of ’n mens dit in “Godsdienstige” of “nie-Godsdienstige” taal doen, is irrelevant.

POSTERS on campus are warning students and staff to be more concerned about saving electricity. This comes after it has come to light that the Stellenbosch University (SU) spent around R12.3 million more on electricity in 2010 than in the previous year. This is significantly higher than in the past. Drastic usage cuts (around 10%) need to be made on campus in order to reduce the costs and ecological damage for 2011. It is estimated that the amount spent on electricity in 2010 increased by 27.4% from 2009. This is expected to rise rapidly over the next five years. Dr Barbara Pool, SU director: Projects, explains why there is an expected increase in electricity consumption for 2011. “Due to an increase in student numbers, more lecture halls and classrooms, student housing, computers and laboratory equipment are required.” She also mentions that SU is a research university – therefore more sophisticated research and laboratory equipment is required.

WINÊ&ÊshowÊoffÊ yourÊcolours! GetÊa

Mr Dolf Krige, manager: SU Utility Services, claims that these posters aim at catching students’ attention, raising awareness of the problem and ultimately encouraging students to use electricity sparingly. According to Dr Pool, the biggest consumer of electricity on campus is airconditioning. “Lighting and electrical appliances such as computers, printers, copiers, kettles, laboratory equipment and lifts all consume a lot of electricity.” Energy conservation directly links to SU’s Hope Project. One of the five main themes in this project is sustainability. The Hope Project, launched last year, aims at fostering an internationally acclaimed institution for solving social and environmental problems. Overconsumption of electricity poses two main concerns. Firstly, it is not economically viable for the university. It is also not ecologically sustainable. Pool says that even though the trend of electricity consumption leans towards conservation, the increase in electricity fees is alarming. Furthermore, an increase in electrical costs is predicted for 2012 and 2013. Eskom has warned that electricity expenditure will rise by 25.8% in 2011/2012 and another 25.9% in 2012/2013.

Beautiful Vintage There’s a vintage vibe on campus you just can’t miss. The scene sometimes looks a lot like a seventies polaroid picture – those you dig up out of an old university bag your mom used to own. Elsje came out of the Neelsie like a real Parisian on a stroll down the banks of the river Seine. I loved how she paired her romantic top from Paris

with a simple black dress. Izelle’s earrings caught my eye as I passed her. Her pixie haircut, lovely antique earrings and floral dress fit her like a glove. While walking from the building, Hendri and his old leather bag attracted my attention. He bought the case from a second-hand shop in Hermanus. He uses it to carry all his books to class. Michael’s shoes intrigued me for a while before I had the courage to go and find out more. I didn’t know that you can still get hold of them, but they do look

better than a pair of crocs, and he had obviously put some thought into his outfit. I went crazy for Julia’s brogues; the tan leather goes with absolutely anything and nothing says style plus comfort quite as perfectly as a nice pair of brogues. Mirandi’s outfit struck me as vintage in a casual way. From a locket with pictures of her family to the bag that used to be her mom’s, this is a girl who’s comfortable with her heritage. Telling your story in a fashionable way is as stylish as you can get.

Top vintage must-haves: High-waisted shorts or trousers. They can be any colour and should be worn with an old belt. All vintage girls should own one. 2. Panama hat: It’s still summertime, so in order to be stylish while hiding from the sun’s rays, you can leave your hat on. 3. Shoulder dress – Whether it’s a one-shoulder dress or an off- shoulder dress, this is a must-have. 4. The ma xi-skirt – Yes, girls! The 70’s are back, so go dig out your ma xi-skirt, preferably the one with a split to the thigh. 5. Wear bright colours – whether it’s your skirt or shirt, colour blocking is the big message.

The morning after the night before does not need to be a drag: try these hangover cures

Saying goodbye to your Babbelas blues Travel Column

michaela Scheepers

O

verindulging in a glass of wine every once in a while is perfectly normal, although the aftermath doesn’t seem to be anything but torture. The morning after the night before is never pleasant, with symptoms like a dry throat, nausea, headaches and and upset stomach. Almost enough to keep you from drinking again. A few people will tell you to have another drink the next morning. So why doesn’t this cure work? Your liver breaks down the ethanol found in alcohol. This causes the drunken feeling one experiences. When putting more alcohol into your system you are only postponing the effects of a hangover. Doctors do not have any medical prescriptions for hangovers. Here is some valuable advice on what to do when the hangover strikes. Water? Everyone knows drinking water helps to reduce a hangover, but drinking

it while partying may not reduce the effects. It is advised that you drink a lot of water the next morning as a way to get the alcohol out of your system. Pour salt in your water. Your body is better at taking up isotonic and sugar. Water alone might taste like tequila. Rehydrate is a sachet that can be bought at pharmacies. It helps to put back all the needed minerals in your body. Regmakers. Yes, this is a real product name. At only R10,90 it is a cheap way to reduce that wobbly feeling. McNabs (R10,90) or a vitamin B injection (R60) are also advised. Don’t drink coffee. The caffeine is a diuretic and you don’t want to lose any more water. It also stimulates your tired body. You should also avoid red bull.

Eating a sandwich with lots of butter or drinking a glass of milk might help. There is nothing like a hearty Wimpy breakfast to help that queezy feeling that greets you in the morning. Fat digests slowly and protects the stomach. Fatty milk also slows down absorption.

Drinking Aspirin is not a good idea. It is a blood thinner and will only make you feel worse.

Fizzy drinks speed up the amount of alcohol going into the blood stream. Avoid them.

Activated charcohol can be found in most pharmacies. It absorbs the alcohol vigorously and your upset stomach will feel a lot better. (It’s not braai charcoal, so don’t panic.)

Drag yourself out of bed, put your gym shoes on and go for a crazy workout. This might seem impossible in the state your body is in, but strangely enough it will make you feel a lot better.

Orange juice speeds up the metabolism of alcohol by the liver. Have a glass or two. The vitamin C is also a great way for your body to recover.

After the workout, get into a hot shower. Headaches occur because of constricted blood vessels and tense muscles. A hot shower helps to relieve the tension.

The green ambulance. Yes, Creme Soda. It has not been scientifically proven that this does work. But hey, why not? Drinking wine rather than

beer is not a good idea. Choose one drink and stick to it. When really tempted, drink a beer before you have a glass of wine. Some alcohol, like red wine, brandy or port, contains a higher balance of congeners, making it more likely to make you feel like you got hit by a bus the next morning. Try drinking less of that double brandy special.

Don’t forget to get enough rest. Sleep, your body is tired.

The basic thing to remember is that alcohol is toxic to every major organ in your body. The severity of a hangover depends on the amount of alcohol consumed in a period of time. Cheers, but don’t drink it all up now.

et me put things into perspective for you before we go anywhere. My mom comes from deep rural Mpumalanga, her dad was a priest and she had five other siblings. My father comes from the township of Daveyton where he and his five brothers were brought up in a two room house by a single parent mother. My name is Themba Nkosi, more popularly know as Euphonik, and I don’t believe in anything being impossible. For as long as I can remember all I’ve ever wanted to do with my life was and is exactly what I’m doing with it now. I dreamt about it long before I understood anything about the industry, researched immensely what it would take to be successful in the business, identified all the key players and people who were doing things in the business that tickled my fancy and made sure that I got as close

to every single one of those players as possible. They say you achieve as big as you dream and you had better believe that I dreamed this big and in the last ten to fifteen years I’ve been focused on being right here. Every goal I’ve set out for myself until recently I’ve achieved, and along the way doors I hadn’t even dreamed of opening opened up to me. You could call it luck but I believe my work ethic and all the things I was doing along the way made other people see potential in me that I didn’t even know I had. Sometimes your dreams and aspirations seem like an unreachable goal but trust me - if you put your mind body and soul into something only God can stop you from being who and what you want to be. HB Thom gereed vir La Bête

Die ‘ondier’ van vermaak malherbe nienaber

L

Vir Jou Vermaak Angus Taylor is known in South Africa for his powerful, often large, works of sculpture, characterised by outstanding craftsmanship. His technical skills are seen in the expert handling of a surprising range of materials, from traditional cast bronze and polished steel to straw. He will be exhibiting his art at the V&A Waterfront from 10 February until 2 March. Contact ctgallery@ everard.co.za for more information. Holiday Murray sal op Donderdag 17 Februarie by Bohemia optree. La Bête is David Hirson’s multiaward-winning comedy hit of the 2010 Broadway and West End season. It will open the SU Drama season at the HB Thom Theatre on

Valere as ’n maniese straatkunstenaar en Elomire as die koninklike toneelskrywer. Die toneelstuk word ernstig en daar volg ’n ontnugterde empatie wanneer Elomire vra: “Does any way less radical exist that ideals do not become trivialised?” Ultrafestive day marinette potgieter

This year’s Ultrafest lived up to its expectations when bands like The Black Market Riots, Saintfearless and CrazyWhiteBoy provided their fans with a day festival not to be forgotten. Although the day started off a little slowly, the pace picked up gradually and the crowd grew stronger throughout the day. The Van der Stel sport grounds were well-equiped for the amount of students. The sound of the production was also of top quality. CrashCarBurn was one of the favourites of the night with hits like “Serenade” and “Long Live Tonight”.

The overall favourite on the night was the electro band Die Heuwels Fantasties that took to the stage at the end of the night. Even lesser-known bands such as The Loveglove Pyrotechnics got the necessary publicity and had the crowd on their feet. The famous house DJ Roger Goode also graced the stage at the electro tent. “This was definitely an epic success and an event that the organisers can be proud of. “There were smiles all around and everybody seemed to be having a lot of fun,” said Ilanie Brits, Stellenbosch University student who attended Ultrafest.

Reviews

From the archives Billy Elliot maria geuystyn

FOLLOWING the success of The Full Monty, Billy Elliot (2000) is another film set against the backdrop of the turmoil of the 80’s miners’ strike in Northern England. What The Full Monty accomplished with striptease, Billy Elliot accomplishes with drag. The film stars 14 yearold Jamie Bell in the title role of this coming of age story, in which a boy chooses ballet over boxing, despite the objections of his beleaguered miner father and bullying older brother. As Billy makes the weekly trudge to the gym for his boxing lessons, he is gradually entranced by the girls in their tutus performing pliés. At this stage Julie Walters slaps a pair of tights on him and the stage is set for the “dance as escapism” theme which the film is actually about. Stage to screen director Stephen Daldry, known for films such as The Hours (2002) and The Reader

(2008), uses his experience as a Broadway director to bring remnants of the theatre to the screen as we start to see elements of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Jamie Bell gives an exceptionally sensitive performance as the young Billy Elliot and is skillfully supported by Julie Walters as his passionate ballet teacher and Gary Lewis as his imposing and desperate father. Daldry does not shy away from the sentiments of Lee Hall’s script, but instead infuses it with the gritty camera work of Brian Tufano (Trainspotting) and a soundtrack by T-Rex, The Clash and The Jam, and allows the fancy footwork of boxing to lead to ballet. During the final moments of the film, Daldry ties the knot, as a much older Billy, transformed into a prince, leaps into the air during a performance of Swan Lake by the Royal Ballet School. This is an exceptionally wellwritten production and is appreciated by film critics around the world.

aintfearless are taking the stage by storm with Kieron Brown taking on vocals and guitar, Paul Fairbrother on lead guitar, Kevin Mercuur on bass, Kelvin Mercuur on keyboard and Cody Meyer banging away on the drums. “We are a rock band, but our music also includes elements of blues, electro and spiritual dance,” Kevin says. “My brother (Kelvin) and I used to present music programs on channels like MK and SABC 2. This is where our interest in music started. “Since then we have always dreamt about being in a band ourselves. Thus joining the Saints when their former bassist – Jethro Jenneker – left the band and moved to America, was very

exciting.” The band started in March 2009, with original band members Keiron, Paul and Jethro. Cody joined later. “We released our first CD at the end of 2009. We also had our first music video on MK, but we only started getting serious in 2010 with gigs alongside names such as Van Coke Kartel and New Holland,” Kieron mentions. Although the boys have already made a huge impression on other musicians such as Ard Matthews (Just Jinger) and Ryno Velvet, they believe that 2011 is going to be the year where the “stars align in [their] favour”. “We are MFM’s band of the month for February and we have great shows lined up for the next two months,” Kieron says. Saintfearless have already

performed four times this year in Stellenbosch, including two shows during RAG and Ultrafest. “We are excited about everything that has happened thus far. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. “The way that everyone has supported us makes it all seem like a dream. We have to thank them for getting us this far,” Kieron adds. Saintfearless will be on MFM on 24 February and will be playing the Adorned Festival in Table View on 19 February. They will also be performing at Zula Lounge in Long Street, Cape Town on 24 February, as well as at The Waiting Room on 28 February. They are set to be part of the lineup at Woordfees in Stellenbosch on Saturday 12 March.

This song has been featured in movies like Shrek 2 and series like Grey’s Anatomy. It reached instant success when his self-produced second album, 9, was released in 2006. f I had to list some of my most surreal moments at Stellenbosch, having tea with a squirrel would definitely be one of them. Every Matie knows Pokkel – surely no Varsity Cup match would be successful without him, where he is greatly responsible for brewing up Matie gees and spurring on the maroon boytjies. He is the official mascot of Maties Rugby, with which he has a very long history. A few might recall that in recent history, however, he has been absent after sustaining some superficial, but devastating injuries. Stories have it that his previous body was dismembered by a mob crowd after a particularly rough game a few years ago. Thanks to FNB’s efforts at revamping the Varsity Cup series, some serious reconstructive surgery took place and Pokkel made a comeback with a vengeance in 2009. When I met him on a Friday afternoon, just an acorn’s throw from the Jan S Marais Park, he indeed appeared bigger and stronger than I’d first imagined. Perhaps the fact that his team are the unbeaten champions of the Varsity Cup adds a formidable air of pride and confidence.

Don’t tackle me. I have a very good lawyer, he warns troublemakers But this doesn’t imply that he is big-headed (which he physically is). Over a cup of tea, I discover that this 2m colossus is a down-toearth chipper chap, with normal likes and dislikes (and secrets to be shared). Taken aback by his size, I ask him about his good squirrel figure, and Pokkel tells me about his studies that include gymming as his main subject. But he’s quick to assert that his muscle gain is a result of a natural diet consisting of “steak, Black Label and natural mountain water.” No steroids whatsoever. On the same note, he actually shares his weakest moment – an experience at Eikestad Primary School, promoting Maties Rugby,

where he was swarmed by young kids. “It was here that I felt weakest,” he says. Asked about his lack of a tail, he explains nonchalantly, “Some squirrels are cut, others are uncut. I just happen to be one of the former. All guys would understand.” It’s apparently not a big issue for him, and he doesn’t feel inferior as a result. Rather, he argues, it gives him an athletic and acrobatic advantage, allowing him to do his job better. And that he takes his job seriously is in no doubt. His greatest passion is rugby, and Pokkel can often be seen displaying his good ball skills with the crowd and booting the ball through the goals. At one match, he actually became too involved with the game, and tackled a Pukke wing during play. The moment was famously captured by SuperSport and lived on on Youtube and Facebook. Unfortunately, the referee was not very amused and issued Pokkel with a yellow card. Security escorted Pokkel off the field and he had to sit out the rest of the game. Besides rugby, what are his other likes? “Matie girls,” he is quick to answer. “I absolutely love Matie girls!” And the girls love him, too. Once, Pokkel was attacked by renegade Simonsbergers who tried to decapitate him. It was a gang of girls that came to Pokkel’s rescue and reprimanded the silly boys. Also high on his list of loves are Black Label, gymming and sokkie-ing. In fact, he had the opportunity to langarm with the king of sokkiemusic, Kurt Darren, who was singing at a game. “He’s a really good dancer,” Pokkel admits. He is also very active on Facebook under his full name, Pokkel S Quirrel. He’s very keen to make new friends from all over, and prides himself on the fact that his list of friends is so diverse. “It ranges from old ooms to housewives, students, kiddies, and even other mascots.” And dislikes? Pokkel admits that he cannot swim, and is not pleased by the efforts of some students to throw him in Coetzenburg’s pool during pool parties he’s attended. Apparently his fur and water don’t mix well. This statement lets me wonder a bit about his personal hygiene, and if he washes at all. Naturally, Pokkel doesn’t like the other Varsity Cup teams’ mascots. And at the moment he does not even like Proffie, our new Maties mascot. Proffie, though a somewhat awkward fan of the game, is there to remind students of the importance of balancing fun times with their academics. Spectators are welcome to befriend Proffie on Facebook, too. A final dislike Pokkel shares is students trying to tackle him. “Don’t tackle me. I have a very good lawyer,” he warns troublemakers. After our conversation, Pokkel lies his head down on a nearby sofa and fades from the conversation. At last, an opportunity to meet the

guy behind the mask. In fact, two people have been responsible for channelling Pokkel’s identity since his reappearance in 2009. I made a point of visiting both to find out more about their experiences. Their identities may not be revealed. Something that’s immediately evident, is the fact that their personalities greatly share in Pokkel’s lively gees. The first chap to carry Pokkel’s identity did so from 2009 to 2010. And the most surprising aspect for me is his appearance – a lean guy, weighing in at approximately 60kg. It’s hard to imagine his slender body underneath the brawny build of Pokkel. But don’t let that fool you – he is incredibly acrobatic and he did an excellent job of entertaining the crowds. Not to mention the fact that this was the guy responsible for tackling the Pukke wing, as mentioned earlier. Under his guidance, Pokkel has become the much-loved mascot everyone knows today. Another aspect contrary to Pokkel’s popular identity is the fact that this guy acknow ledges liking boys more than girls – bringing a somewhat different meaning to “backing the boytjies”. Another lad took over Pokkel’s suit at the beginning of this year, after spending quite some time supporting his predecessor. The new medium is bigger than his forerunner and a rugby player himself. He has played the game at various levels – at school, res, PSO and even club rugby. And there’s no doubt that he enjoys the attention from the girls. I want to know more about the logistics, and what it’s like to be suited-up. Both acknowledge that it’s a particularly weighty load to carry on one’s shoulders – especially Pokkel’s head, which is heavy and can get in the way. They admit to sweating a lot in the suit, which gets wet and heavy from perspiration. After a match, they sometimes have to leave it out to dry for days on end. My question as to Pokkel’s washing habits are answered when they disclose that he’s dry-cleaned three times a year. I’m curious to know what they wear underneath the suit. “A ball-box!” the current medium exclaims. “Some of the students can get quite nasty and punchy in inappropriate places.” And what if nature calls? “Basically, going to the bathroom is not an option,” they admit. “But you sweat most of it out anyway.” What is evident is that they live for the fans. And both Pokkel and his bearers agree that the greatest part of the game’s energy comes from the supporters. Matie gees is therefore one of the key contributing factors to Maties’ status as undefeated champions. With the encouragement of Pokkel, let’s win it for the fourth time.

By sommige universiteite soos byvoorbeeld Rhodes Universiteit in Grahamstad, kry jy outomaties plek in ’n koshuis én in ’n enkelkamer. – BEPLANNER

Accommodation a struggle With regards to the article about first year black students struggling for accommodation on campus: Several factors contribute to this problem. Personally, the main problem was that I received zero correspondence regarding my residence application. When I got accepted for my degree but heard nothing about my accommodation, I assumed that I would automatically receive accommodation. Three months later, I phoned the university to verify information, but was shocked to realise that I had no place to stay. It was as if my application was never processed at all! There was no means to track it whatsoever. I basically had to beg for a place on the phone, just four weeks before classes started. Luckily, I got a place twenty minutes later. Why does the university not provide students

with rejection letters, accompanied with some kind of aid to get private accommodation, like a list of popular student places like La Rez and Academia? The second factor is arguably the biggest cause of this problem. Most first generation students depend on student loans. These application loans get processed in February. Many students assume that being granted a full student loan will not require any extra finance from them. The private accommodation system in this town requires one to search months in advance and have a healthy deposit (and January rent) on hand. A new student unaware of how things work in Stellenbosch does not budget an extra R5 000+ for private accommodation. It is a very rude awakening to a harsh reality. If it wasn’t for the ubuntu from some fellow students and Kayamandi/Idas Valley residents, I can only imagine how much worse they would have it here. No one will reject a chance to study just because of accommodation uncertainty. We shouldn’t be expecting them to. – TJ Biza

’n Kampus vol seerowers Wat? Seerower? Hoe nou?

his week another Valentine’s Day passed us by. A day when the glorious martyrdom of Saint Valentine – a man who may or may not have actually existed and whose connection with February the 14th is largely a ploy by the church to supercede a concurrent pagan festival (yes, again) – is tragically reduced to a celebration of infatuation and commercialisation. I’m not being a grumpy Mr-NoLove here, I just think it’s symptomatic of a general sanitisation of our world. Political correctness and a desire to shield ourselves from harsh reality are sucking the guts, glory and greatness out of life, replacing it with moralising messages and pleas for self-improvement. This university is one of the worst offenders. Vensters was nothing but profoundly preachy messages being repeated ad nauseum by ironically skankily-dressed first-years under lurid lighting (alliteration bonus!): Love the planet;

Love yourself; Don’t drink yourself into a coma unless one of your friends is there to drive you home, in which case go for it. What happened to the true meaning of Vensters? You should always do something because you did it last year, only this time with a bigger backdrop. Even our Matie Diary is filled with morali sing messages. The entry for May the 6th reads: “Perform like a pro: Go to class prepared and take thorough notes.” Et tu, Diary? I get enough of that sort of sloganeering from my mom. I don’t need my diary berating me for not being a better person while I’m planning weekends away. That sort of betrayal coming from an inanimate organising aid really stings. Each month has its own particular core value like Alcohol Abuse, Tolerance, Employment or Rugby. That’s right, the whole book is filled with preachy messages, except September, which lists the World Cup Rugby Matches. Because that’s what Stellenbosch is: Moralising and Rugby. I can see the merit behind positive messages in everyone’s diaries, but I miss the joy of reading every single quote the first day I got my hands on that diary, taking in the glory of the assorted quips and sexual insults among SRC members (which, come to think about it, is probably why they were forced to change it). I also miss not having the feeling that all the controversial bits are being hidden from me (segue!). Two weeks ago mysterious “incidents” in the initiation of first years were alluded to without much enthusiasm. Why no details? What are they doing to these kids that

we aren’t even allowed to hear about? I know one of the unmentioned residence’s seniors were caught having “conversations” with their first years while someone walked around menacingly with a hockey stick (a state of affairs which is only acceptable if you’re actually teaching these new Maties about hockey). What did those other huise do to suffer the ignomy of being mentioned? Shove fishhooks in their first years’ mouths and drag them around campus? What this age needs are heroic souls unafraid of the Man telling them what to do. And have them we shall! Two former SRC members staged a valiant uprising. For those unaware of the phenomenon that was Prostest-nic 2011, the Botanical Gardens recently imposed a “no picnicking without official Botanical Gardens Picnic Baskets” rule. Bravely, a picnic bereft of official picnic baskets and brimming with civil disobedience was organised. Scorning the potential sanctions, a brave group of protesters assembled to enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon picnic while the management of Katjiepiering were cowed into submission by righteous indignation making this the first protest in history to be fought largely with humus. Would that we were all brave enough to stand up for what we believe in, to fight for a world where we can sit wherever we want and eat meals of our own making. Perhaps in that world we would not shy away from the truth nor foist generic do-gooder sayings on others. Perhaps in that world we would be happy.

Osama bin Laden haat Amerika. Jy weet dit seker reeds. Jy het heelwaarskynlik al sy vlogs gelees. Hy haat “every fiber of [America’s] black, accursed soul”. Wel,

behalwe vir vlugbal. Hy love vlugbal.

Skielik lyk Jacob Zuma soos Prinses Diana. There is something rotten...

televisietyd sou moes betaal.

Gonda Barnes, a postgraduate LL.B.-student, has been coming to the Learning Commons every day since it opened and thinks it is “awesome”. “It makes me want to study. I am looking forward to the opening of the Research Commons and if they have law books there, I will go running towards it.” A student assistant, Maymoena Abrahams, says it is mostly first year students who are a bit stressed about finding information and referencing it. “We are here to help students to become more information literate, so we walk around and ask the students if they need any help. Students also come to the help desk and ask us to help them, either with looking for information about a specific topic or with referencing articles.”

Walter Musakwa is busy with his Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Studies and thinks the Learning Commons is “a big asset for the library that will benefit students greatly”. “It can be a bit noisy at times, but the aircon makes up for it. The environment is conducive for studying and is much more modern than similar spaces at the university (in KZN where) I studied before.”

aties lost 21-15 against Shimlas in Bloemfontein on Monday 14 February. This shock defeat of the defending Varsity Cup champions was their first since 2009. The win was unexpected after Shimlas’ unimpressive loss against UCT the week before in Bloemfontein. Shimlas were leading 10-6 at the break with an equal amount of

territory and possession between the two teams. Penalties were exchanged between the sides. The highlight of the first half came when ex-Maties player Charl Weideman scored Shimlas’ first try with the assistance of fly-half Jaco Colyn. With 20 minutes to go, it seemed the game would go down to the wire as Maties were leading 15-13. Injuries disrupted Maties’ efforts. Shimlas took advantage of this and started playing off their errors.

The turning point of the game came when Shimlas wing Jamba Ulengo scored for the home side. This gave them the confidence to carry their lead right through to the end. According to mr Abrie van Zyl, team manager: Maties Rugby, Shimlas “completely capitalised on the errors that the Maties team made. They definitely took the opportunities presented to them during the game”. Three other games also took place on Monday night. UCT defeated Pukke 36-8 in Potchefstroom after

Pukke were initially in the lead with 80. Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) defeated Tuks (University of Pretoria) with a score of 46-34. TUT impressed with their win, seeing that they lost to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) last week. UJ defeated the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth with a final score of 2116. Maties are playing against TUT on 21 February in Pretoria. The game will be televised.
