Algoma Walleye Fishing by The Fish’n Canada Show. Fish’n Canada’s 2015 shooting season started off with a bang as we had the honour of again flying into Ontario’s Algoma region for some outstanding Walleye fishing. Our destination was Nagagami Lake which is deemed as the ultimate Walleye structure lake in Algoma (bottom features which attract fish). After experiencing Nagagami Lake for the first time, we definitely agree. We found and caught fish shallow, deep, in sheltered bays, in big water, on points, on humps and believe it or not, the list goes on. Since it was early in the Walleye season we had to rely on the trusty jig and minnow combo... not a problem in our books as it’s a “go to” for Algoma Walleye in general. As the season progresses artificial baits will definitely come into their own... I guess we’ll have to save that for a future trip. One statement we can honestly keep on making without any hesitation is, “Algoma produces more and bigger Walleye for us than anywhere else in the country!” AlgomaThatReal.com 16

Tips-Fly Fishing Using Streamers by The New Fly Fisher Show.

In Algoma Country you have a lot of great fishing opportunities on a fly. One of the best fly patterns you can use is a streamer. Streamers work with smallmouth bass, brook trout, steelhead, lake trout and even northern pike! Here are tips to consider when using streamers in Algoma:

Smallmouth bass Smallmouth bass eat lots of minnows and smelt, especially in the spring and fall. Try using intermediate lines married to fly patterns like Scotty’s McFly, the Gamechanger or even the Grey Ghost to trigger strikes. Sizes should be 2 to 8. White is the number one choice in colours.

Brook Trout For brook trout try using black, white and olive streamers that have the silhouette of sculpin. Sculpin are a favourite food source for trout and swinging one of the common sculpin patterns like Zoo Cougars will entice explosive strikes.

NORTHERN PIKE Northern pike love eating perch, walleye and whitefish. Try using large streamers (6-10 inches) that have the colouration of these sources of food. Full-sinking lines in 9 or 10 weight are ideal for pike and getting these streamers down in the water column.

Lake Trout Right after ice-out lake trout are on the prowl for food in water depths of 3-10 feet. Casting streamers in white, black or purple with either a full sinking or intermediate flyline is a great way to trigger a bite. Once you hook into a lake trout – hang on, this will be a significant battle of tug-of-war.

Steelhead Steelhead are very aggressive when they come into rivers searching for food or post-spawn. Black streamers such as Wooly Buggers and especially black Matukas are very deadly. Swing the flies near or by where steelheads lie and hang on! The strikes will nearly jolt the rod out of your arm!

Whenever you come to Algoma, no matter what season, ensure you bring a number of streamers in your fly box. With a vast array of species and fishing opportunities available here – you are sure to hook into a trophy fish with a streamer!

Hunting

Our professionals will cater to you if you are not familiar with our area, or want to be assured a fair chance of going home with a trophy. Your meals, accommodations, trophy mounting and the packing and shipping of your game will all be taken care of for you while you relax and enjoy the excitement of the stalk.

Hunt for Big Game, Wild Fowl or Small Game. Many of our Algoma resorts, lodges and fly-in wilderness camps easily transform themselves from summer vacation locations to seasonal hunt camps with experienced guides. These hunting lodges play an important role for the nonresident moose hunter because all non-resident moose hunters must be a registered guest at a tourist outfitters lodge to be eligible for a moose licence. Hunting season in Algoma begins when the leaves change colour in the fall and ends when the first blanket of snow layers the ground. We offer three types of hunting adventures in our “big backyard”: small game, wild fowl and big game. Black bear season begins in mid-August while small game, wild fowl and big game, including moose & deer, begin mid September thru mid December.

ONTARIO HUNTING REGULATIONS & LICENCE INFORMATION www.ontario.ca/travel-and-recreation/hunting Every person in your party must have a valid licence and Outdoors Card to hunt any animal or bird and must have it with them while hunting. Non-residents must be 16 years of age or older and only residents may apply at 15 with the consent of both parents. A resident is someone who has resided in 19 Algoma | 2016 Travel Guide

Ontario for at least 6 consecutive months during the 12 months immediately before applying for a licence. All others are considered a non-resident. A small game hunting licence is not valid in some parts of Northern and Central Ontario from June 16 to August 31.

Big Game Hunt

Hunt Algoma Black Bear, by Canada in the Rough.

Nothing beats the incredible scenic drive through Algoma Country. Well actually, maybe hopping into a plane after driving to White River and flying into your remote wilderness lodge does… As the plane soared high above the retreat we were about to land on, I could see the pristine lake stretching for miles, surrounded by the vast Canadian wilderness. When we docked and shook hands with the lodge owners, we knew we were in for a special week. The bear hunting was by boat only, access man could not get to otherwise. As a serious big game hunter, those are words you want to hear as it means the animals have had no pressure. We were settled for only a few hours when they fed us a meal fit for a king. We then poured over thousands of trail camera pictures from the previous months scouting. The guides had done their homework and the bear numbers were incredible. After a great night at the cabin we woke to a big breakfast, and a morning of incredible walleye and pike fishing. The bite was on and we landed fish after fish.

Mid-afternoon we suited up and headed for the tree stand. The wind was right and the warm August air made for a beautiful night in the woods. A few hours passed with nothing, then 30 min before dark, the magic started. A large black shape moved through the timber and disappeared. Readying my bow I waited with great anticipation. Two minutes later a big head poked out, and then the full body. I knew from the scouting pictures this was the target bear for this stand. The bear inched closer to my shooting lane. Putting my excitement aside I raised my crossbow, the bear stepped into the clearing and I settled the pin behind his shoulder and squeezed the shot. It was perfect, the bear ran into the timber out of site. We easily followed the trail to big bodied Algoma black bear. The food, accommodations were first class, the fishing and hunting as good as it gets. But the owners may be the reason I can’t wait to return, they provided me precious memories I will cherish.

We have plenty of reason to brag about the awesome scenery, food and accommodations dotted throughout our 28,000 square miles of Northern Ontario. It’s time to ride Highway 129. Be sure to take a selfie with the famous Wawa Goose then get ready to experience one of the Top Ten Drives in Canada: Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie (to us locals, it’s “the Soo”). The ride between Wawa and the Soo takes about 3 hours but we recommend you take a full day. There are many places to stop and photograph the jaw dropping scenery along Lake Superior, and cool must stop leg stretches along the way. Are you ready to take the plunge and ride around the mighty Lake Superior? Three States, one Province and Lake Superior make for a life changing tour. It’s got humbling, breathtaking scenery, tasty places to eat, and bike-friendly places to stay. You’ll experience different cultures, local traditions and meet great people all around the lake. Anglers, remember to put your shore lunch fire out. A wildfire can affect fish and wildlife habitat along a shoreline and can be very expensive to control. If you have a shore lunch fire, remember the rules: • Build the fire on bare soil or rock in a location sheltered from the wind. • Make sure the fire is a safe distance from all flammable material, including overhanging branches. • Keep the fire small and tend it at all times. • Most importantly, put the fire out when you are done. Soak it with water, stir the ashes and soak it again. Repeat until the ashes are cold to the touch. LAKE SUPERIOR NATIONAL MARINE CONSERVATION AREA Hike, fish, swim, camp, kayak or simply wander along a quiet trail – there are almost as many ways to enjoy the North Shore of Lake Superior as there are waves on her vast watery face. An outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination, the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area provides superior, year round adventure.

Pukaskwa National Park A Must Visit! Photos & Story by Sheri Minardi

Pukaskwa National Park is a hiker’s paradise regardless of your skill level. Pukaskwa National Park is situated along the shore of Lake Superior, 25 km before Marathon, Ontario and is located next to Pic River First Nation. Pukaskwa is the only National Park in Ontario and has 1,878 km of boreal forest, rocky shorelines with some sandy and driftwood beaches overlooking Lake Superior and the Pic River Dunes. The Hattie Cove Campground is where one would stay if you prefer the “Front-Country”. The campground provides you with a choice of 67 campsites that are very private and clean with access to 6 trails close by. There are some sites with electricity and some Accessible Sites. The easy and moderate trails range from 30 minutes up to 2 hours to hike. The trails are well marked and can be hiked at your leisure. The easy trails are the Boardwalk Beach Trail and the Hattie Cove Fire Walk via the Coastal Hiking Trail. The moderate trails are the Beach Trail, the Southern Headland Trail, the Manito Miikana Trail and the Bimose Kinoomagewnan Trail. Each of these trails traverse a pristine boreal forest that take your breath away with its beauty. Learn the seven grandfather teachings as you “walk the teachings” along the Bimose Kinoomagewnan Trail that circles Half Way Lake.

To make the hike enjoyable be sure to wear proper hiking footwear, bring bug spray, water and sunscreen. The “Back Country” is for the experienced hiker or paddler. The Coastal Hiking Trail parallels the Superior Coastline as does the Coastal Paddling Route. An 18 km hike will take you to the White River Suspension Bridge via the Coastal Hiking Trail. It is important that you check in at the Hattie Cove Visitor Centre before you head out on the Coastal Trail where you will camp out in the back country. The Visitor Centre has WiFi for those wishing to stay connected. You can learn Geo Caching from the very helpful & knowledgeable park staff and use their GPS systems. You can also learn about the Ojibwe Peoples from park staff who are Ojibwe and love to share their culture with you. A visit isn’t complete until you find the “Red Chairs” and take a selfie to tweet #SharetheChair in social media. These chairs are in all of Canada’s National Parks. Visit Pukaskwa National Park whether to hike, canoe, kayak or to relax and it will not disappoint. The wildlife, vegetation and the glorious sunsets will keep you coming back. St. Joseph Island

M

any colourful stories – some legend, some historical

fact – are told about St. Joseph Island, the second largest freshwater island in the world, situated in the channel between Lakes Huron and Superior. About 45 km (28 mi) long and 24 km (15 mi) wide, the 140,000-acre island is 56 km (28 mi) east of Sault Ste. Marie via Highways 17 and 548. Originally named Anipich, the Ojibway word for “place of the hardwood trees”, the Island was given its present name by Jesuit missionaries to honour the patron saint of a new Indian church they were building. Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada is a mustsee stop. The British chose St. Joseph Island as the ideal location for a fort because of its proximity to Fort Mackinac, to the navigation routes controlling the fur trade and access to the Great Lakes. It was from Fort St. Joseph that a surprise invasion took place in 1812, leading to the capture of the American Fort on Mackinac Island. The Island is linked to the mainland by a toll free bridge, opened in 1972. With full service marinas, championship 9-hole golf course, libraries, public beaches and trails within easy

Information for U.S. & International Travelers CROSSING THE CANADA-U.S. BORDER In most instances, American travelers have no issues crossing over the border into Canada. However, there are some recent changes to travel documentation requirements for U.S. citizens that visitors to Canada should be aware of. As of June 2009, the U.S. government requires all of its citizens 16 years or older returning to the USA from Canada to have a valid passport by air. When crossing by land or sea, you require either a valid passport, U.S. Passport Card, an Enhanced Driver’s Licence (if available in your State) or be enrolled with Trusted Traveler Program Cards such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST. While Americans technically do not require a passport to enter Canada, U.S. laws require you to present one of the items listed above to U.S. Customs and Border officers upon your return to the United States. For more information on this new American law visit: www.getyouhome.gov

Important Notice for U.S. residents: If you or anyone in your party has a felony or misdemeanor conviction, you may not be allowed into Canada. This includes such offences as a DUI. Your admissibility to Canada depends on the nature of the offence, how many offences you have, as well as how long ago it occurred. If this applies to you or someone traveling with you, it is imperative you contact Immigration Canada well in advance of your arrival. You will likely have to complete some paperwork and Immigration Canada authorities will then advise you of the likelihood of being allowed into Canada. Final determination of your admissibility into Canada is only made when you cross the border. Contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada at www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/tourist.asp or the Canadian Consulate in New York, NY www.can-am.gc.ca/new-york/ regarding any forms you may be required to fill out. You may also wish to call an Immigration Officer at the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Port of Entry to discuss your situation at 1-800-4619999 or 1-204-983-3500 (calls outside of Canada). If you bring in more than the amount listed here, you will be required to pay the duty at the Border on excess amounts. Make sure you fully declare all alcohol in your possession.

TOBACCO: If you are 19 years of age or older and crossing the border into Ontario, you are allowed to bring, free of duty, up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 200 grams (7 oz.) of manufactured tobacco and 200 tobacco sticks. You may bring additional quantities but you will be required to pay duties and taxes on the excess amounts. PETS: Dogs and cats accompanying their owners from the U.S. must have current (within 36 months) rabies vaccination certificates. Owners from other countries who wish to bring their pets with them should contact 1-800-442-2342 / 1-613-2252342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 or visit www.inspection.gc.ca Vehicles and Insurance Any necessary permits are issued at the port of entry. Hospital and Medical Services Most communities in Algoma have hospitals and/or resident doctors. Wise travelers will check with their medical service plans to ensure they will be covered while in Canada. If you are importing prescription drugs, make sure they are clearly identified. The drugs should be in the original packaging with a label that specifies what they are and that they are being used under prescription. If this is not possible, carry a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor. For further information and insurance details contact your travel or insurance agent.

Credit Cards, Financial Services and U.S. Funds Chartered banks are located in virtually all cities and towns in Algoma. These full-service institutions are the best locations for exchanging currency. There is also a government sanctioned Canada / U.S. currency exchange service at the Ontario Travel Information Centre in Sault Ste. Marie and at the Duty Free Store & Kiosk. Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and AMEX, are generally honoured in all communities . Be sure to check with individual businesses before or when booking accommodations to ensure they accept your type of card.

Liquor Outlets and the Law You must be 19 or over to buy or consume liquor, wine and beer in Ontario. It is an offence to consume alcohol anywhere other than in a licenced establishment, your residence or within a reasonable distance of your residence. Ontario laws prohibit having open bottles of liquor in a location accessible to the driver of a vehicle. Please don’t drink and drive! Visitors to Ontario looking to buy liquor or beer for consumption outside a licenced establishment have to go to 2 separate stores. Liquor including wine, is available through stores run by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) or in smaller centers, by their authorized representative. Beer may be purchased through “The Beer Store” or directly from brewery outlets. AlgomaThatReal.com 80

CHAPLEAU, FOLEYET AREAS CHAPLEAU - You’re invited to become lost in your passions in Chapleau! There are countless ways to discover what we find so enchanting about this part of the Boreal Forest: explore the 700,000 hectares of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve; participate in a drum ceremony; or visit our beautiful waterfront for swimming or fishing (to name a few). Chapleau offers a remote and natural setting, which is easily accessible by rail and by Highways 129 and 101. For the more adventurous, enter by canoe, floatplane, or snowmobile.
