Set Induction: Teacher will hold up a picture of Marvin Harrison and ask the students what he is good at. Marvin Harrison is considered by many people to be the best route runner in the NFL. Today we are going to practice running some various routes. Introduction: Can anyone tell me what a route in football is? It is when a receiver in football runs in a specific pattern to get to a general area on the field to catch a ball from the quarterback. Can anyone name some different types of routes there are in football? Hitch, Curl, Slant, Post, Corner, out, in, stop and go, fly. Well today we are going to concentrate on running the curl route, slant

route, and the stop and go. Now when I say go I want you to get into groups of 3 and one of your partners will need to come up and get a football and one partner will need to come up and get the route running sheet from me. Once you get your sheet and football I want you to sit down and wait for further instruction. GO!

Affective: SWBAT form groups without the teacher having to do so and form groups that they can work well in.

Transition: Students will form groups and pick up equipment and sit and wait for further instruction. TP1: Today in your groups we are going to practice running routes, throwing and catching. Now how this is going to work is that one person will be a QB, one will be running the route and one will be hiking the ball to the QB. After you run the route you are hiking the ball. After you hike the ball you are QB, after you are QB you are running the route. After each throw you will rotate positions. You will be keeping track of the number of catches that you make after each throw and writing them down on your assessment sheets. You can only run the route that I have designated you to run. The first route that we are going to work on today is the curl route. In order to run the curl route you are going to push hard off the line of scrimmage when the ball is hiked and sprint 8-10 yards (steps) and then take three short choppy steps and turn your body to the inside for a catch. Get your hands up and form a diamond with your hands to catch the ball. Demonstrate. Each group must start behind the cones. You will now go and practice running the curl routes. I want you to go until each person in your group has went 5 times each then have a seat so that I know you are finished. Check for understanding. Go!

E1: Now we are going to work on running the slant route. For the slant route you are going to push off the line of scrimmage and run straight for 6-7 yards (steps) and the “stab” or “plant” your outside foot into the ground and immediately start running to the opposite sideline in a 45 degree angle. This time you will catch the ball on the run so you will want to get your hands up, eyes on the ball, look the ball into your hands, make the catch, turn and run up the field. Demonstrate. Now I want you to do the same thing as last time. Each person in your group goes 5 times each then sit down when you are done. Check for understanding. Go! A2: Students will practice running the slant route five times each and then sit down when they are finished. E2: Now we are going to work on the stop and go route. For this route you want to push off the line of scrimmage and run 6-8 yards then make three short choppy steps to make the defense think you are running a curl route and then push off and sprint straight down the field as fast as you can. Look the ball into your hands over your shoulder, make the catch and then run for the TD. Demonstrate. Now again run this route five times each and then sit down when you are finished. Check for understanding. Go! A3: Students will practice running the stop and go route five times each and then sit down when they are finished. TP2: Now what I want you and your group members to do is to make up your own original route and name your route as well that you think would work in a game. Then once you have made up your route we are going to let each group display their route to the class. Check for

understanding. GO! A4: Students will develop their own personal unique routes with their group members to show to the rest of the class. Students will also create names for their routes E3: Ok I have been seeing some pretty creative routes. We will start with group one and watch them run their routes first and work our way through each group. A5: Each group will have a chance to display their route and tell us the name of their route. TP3: Now that you all have worked on throwing, catching, and route running we are going to put these skills that you have learned into practice and play a game of flag football. I want you to keep the same teams as last time. Teams 1 and 2 will play on the first field and teams 3 and 4 will play on the second field. Check for understanding. GO! A6: Students will play one game of flag football to work on the skills that they learned in class of route running. Transition: Students will take off their flags and neatly pile them up and put away their footballs and hand in their assessment sheet and have a seat for the closure. Closure: Can anyone tell me what three routes we worked on today? How do you run a curl, slant, and stop and go route?

Cognitive: SWBAT state the three routes that we worked on in class and 3 cues for each route when asked by the teacher. Teacher will verbally assess.
