I’m just a normal kid Interview with Eric, 11 How do you like your insulin pump system? I feel a lot better now – my levels are way more stable. I also like not having to inject myself all the time. All I have to do is change the infusion set every couple of days. That’s so much better than sticking myself with the insulin pen a bunch of times every day. I also don’t have to worry about the doses, since my doctor programs the insulin pump. And my mom worries a lot less now, because she can give me boluses by remote control. She can see that everything is okay on my meter – she always checks the overviews. How long have you been using it? Since I was 10. Where do you wear the pump? I have it attached to my belt in a clip case. It’s pretty small and easy to carry around. I used to have a blue dog case but that’s for little kids. To make it look cooler, I put on a new sticker every Monday. I have a basketball sticker on it right now. Do you need help to use your insulin pump system? I can attach it and insert the infusion set by myself. It’s just as easy as tying my shoes – I have a special tool for inserting it. I also know how to temporarily change my basal rate when we go skating. And the meter has a bolus advisor that helps me get the insulin right for the food I eat. My parents help me out when I don’t know the right values. What do you like best about your insulin pump system? That I can just be a normal kid. I don’t have to time my meals and I don’t have to give myself injections. I can just be the same as everyone else. And at lunchtime I can sit with my friends – that’s so awesome.

Eat what you want, when you want Food is one of life’s simple pleasures. A bowl of fruit salad can make your day in the summer. The Accu-Chek Combo system lets you eat what you like, when you like. A personally programmed basal rate gives you a solid basis during the day. Every three minutes, the Accu-Chek Spirit Combo pump administers a dose of insulin via a catheter. The smallest basal rate you can set is 0.05 units an hour. A keylock prevents the setting from being changed accidentally – a valuable feature when you’re horsing around. The Accu-Chek Aviva Combo meter is wirelessly connected via Bluetooth® for bolusing without even touching the insulin pump. There are four bolusing options for different meals types. The standard bolus can be supplemented by an extended bolus for larger meals. Fatty foods like pizza, for example, are digested more slowly. The Multiwave bolus option helps you keep your blood glucose at a good level after eating them.

I’m free to enjoy my pregnancy Interview with Susan, 30, seven months pregnant: How do you feel? I’m good, thanks. I walk like an elephant, but that’s to be expected. Does your insulin pump system help? It sure does. Keeping my blood glucose steady is even more important for the baby than for me. The insulin pump makes sure we both stay healthy. What are the biggest challenges? My insulin needs have changed but I still feel like I’m in control. Thanks to the insulin, food and blood glucose data that the Accu-Chek Combo system collects, it’s easy for my doctor and me to fine-tune my basal rate profiles. I know that I’ll have to tweak them again when I start breastfeeding. But the Accu-Chek Combo system lets me keep track, so I’m not worried at all. Plus, the bolus advisor helps me keep my blood glucose in the normal range after eating. What about other effects of the pregnancy? How are you sleeping? Every pregnant woman knows that sleeping can be a challenge. I can’t sleep for very long at a time. But with the insulin pump system, that isn’t a problem either. I just activate the appropriate Basal Rate profile. It’s a big relief. And when I do fall sleep I don’t have to set the alarm for the next insulin injection.

Get rest when you need it For many people, a good weekend starts with sleeping late. With the Accu-Chek Combo system, people with diabetes can now also enjoy this freedom. If you want to have a lazy weekend, just adapt your basal rate profile to new schedule. If you experience “dawn syndrome”, your basal rate can be programmed to avoid high glucose levels in the morning. The profile can also be fine-tuned to prevent nighttime hypoglycemia and morning lows. The Accu-Chek Combo system lets you keep your preferred sleeping habits – making you consistently more relaxed and helps to keep you healthier.

I could just hug the whole world! Kimberly, 17, keeps a diary. An excerpt: Today was Kevin’s birthday. We partied at his house and it totally rocked. I was so excited to be there. And thank God my mom isn’t as worried about me getting hypoglycemic since I’ve had my insulin pump. Now that my blood sugar levels are so much better, she’s okay with me going out. It took me ages to pick out the right outfit … and to decide where to wear my pump. In the thigh pouch or attached to my bra? I didn’t want Kevin to feel it when we hug. So I went for the thigh pouch under my black mini. It’s comfortable and you can hardly see it. Now I have the best of everything: my new meter lets me discreetly give myself a bolus without even touching the pump. We were dancing forever. We only took a break to have a drink and eat something from the huge buffet Kevin’s parents had ordered. And I felt fine because my blood sugar was always in the zone. Later Kevin played with his band – I just loved how he got everyone moving. Then he asked me to dance a slow song with him. I wish it hadn’t stopped! I wonder when I’ll see him again … I could just hug the whole world!!!!

Get the party started Life ought to be celebrated. And the best celebrations are spontaneous. Whether a afternoon barbecue turns into an impromptu party, or some friends just kick back and enjoy the weekend: with the Accu-Chek Combo system, you can join in anytime. When snacks are passed around, you just give yourself an extra bolus by remote control using the Accu-Chek Aviva Combo meter. And as the evening mellows and you feel like dancing, it’s easy for you to adjust your basal rate. Not even a drink is out of the question – just temporarily lower your basal rate and you can enjoy a glass of dry wine.

The Accu-Chek 360° Insulin Pump Configuration Software makes the Accu-Chek Spirit Combo insulin pump very easy to set up – and you’ll be amazed at how flexibly you can program your pump to suit your lifestyle. We’re having a great time! Postcard from George, 68, John, 61, and Fred, 65: Dear Susan, We’re having a great time fishing in Norway. We get up at dawn every day – but it’s worth it! The fish are biting like crazy. Don’t ask how, but Fred managed to drop his insulin pump in a fjord, and we thought we would have to head home early. But the helpline was great and a woman from Roche brought him a new pump along with a neoprene carrying case on a sports belt so he wouldn’t lose it again. It’s good to know you can even get help out here in the sticks! We’re looking forward to our two-day camping trip that starts tomorrow. We’ll tell you all about it when we get back. See you soon! George, John and Fred

Running with the best Martin, 40, and Giorgio, 37, triathletes Eleven men in Germany have an ambitious goal: to participate in national and international triathlons. They have a professional trainer and work out several days a week, practicing swimming, cycling and running. They also have diabetes, but they don’t let that slow them down. “Endurance sports are really good for my blood glucose levels, which have become much more stable,” says Martin Stulz. Stulz, 40, has completed the course in three hours and 42 minutes and even finished an Ironman in 2007 together with his friend Giorgio Rossi, who is 37. They both have diabetes and wear insulin pumps, although they prefer different features. Giorgio uses prefilled pen cartridges: “It’s convenient. Instead of filling the cartridges myself, I just stick one in the pump and I’m ready to go.” Martin programs his insulin pump to match the basal rate to his workouts, using advanced features of the Accu-Chek Aviva Combo meter. He also likes the comprehensive meter diary, which gives him a quick overview of high and low blood glucose levels and insulin delivery. The friends’ insulin pumps are always at their sides and perfectly adjusted to their lifestyles as athletes, “although we do take them off to swim.”

Stay fit and active Exercise is good for mind, body and soul. Everyone benefits in many ways from being fit – and that goes double for people with diabetes. As an user of Accu-Chek Spirit Combo or Accu-Chek D-TRONplus insulin pump, you can feel free to get any kind of exercise you want – from basketball to yoga. These pumps are easy and convenient to set for a day of sports or a workout. They are securely held in place by a special sports belt that lets you wear your pump while running or working out. Just lower the basal rate before you start your fitness program. If you prefer swimming or rougher activities such as judo, a disconnectable Accu-Chek infusion set lets you take the pump off for up to two hours. And what about sex? It’s up to you whether or not to remove the pump.

The luer lock connector is easy to use and lets them choose detachable infusion sets with a steel or soft cannula. “We don’t notice them, and they adhere so well that they don’t come off, not even when we’re dripping with sweat from running.”
