Develop the skills you need to prepare and deliver an outstanding speech or presentation At some point in your life, it’s likely that you’re going to be asked to deliver a speech or a presentation. Too many courses begin by focusing on the fear of public speaking; however, CAM-ASEAN will focus on how terrific you’re going to be when you develop more confidence by using powerful techniques. If you’re a savvy presenter, you can use the insights from this course as a helpful reminder. And if you’re a novice speaker, you’ll find techniques that can help you polish any presentation or speech. We’ll discuss how to prepare both technically and emotionally. We’ll explore how to warm up, and open your talk. We’ll show you delivery techniques, including how to use visual aids and props. We’ll also talk about how to handle question and answer session and deliver a strong closing to your presentation. Join us to discover how to develop the confidence and techniques you need to become an effective public speaker.

Mr. Seang Sopagna

INSTRUCTOR’S PROFILE  Mr. Seang Sopagna is a seasoned presenter who has delivered numerous speeches in different settings. Due, in part, to his convincing speeches, he was elected the President of SSEAYP International Cambodia and President of Australian Alumni Association of Cambodia in 2004 and 2012 respectively. He has frequently been invited as a guest speaker for TV interviews and university talks. Mr. Seang Sopagna is now the President of CAM-ASEAN International Institute, Managing Director of Bridge International Translation and Co-director for Public and International Relations and Board Member of Association of Asian Translation Industry.  He is also the Chair of International Relations Committee and Board Member of Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia and a Member of ASEAN Foreign Policy Study Group. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University, Australia and Master’s Degree in Economics from the Royal Academy of Cambodia.

Course Description and Objectives                                                                                                   This course emphasizes on practical skills of public speaking, including techniques to lessen speaker anxiety, the use of visual aids to enhance speaker presentations, and assertive articulation of messages. Its goal is to prepare trainees for success in public speaking situations and to provide them with the basic principles of organization and research needed for effective speeches. Because life in this globalizing world requires coping skills from all of us, we should not overlook “the role of speech in public settings”. Today we seem to have only two real alternatives in coping with the challenges of the era – better speech or sullen silence.” The goal of this course is the former.

Expected Student Learning Outcomes                                                                                               After completing this course, you should be able to: 1. Plan and prepare speeches that inform, persuade, or fulfill the needs of a particular occasion; 2. Use presentation aids to enhance your speeches; 3. Master the fundamental skills to make powerful and convincing speeches and presentations Class Participation Policy                                                                                                                  Attendance Any trainee with more than three absences (excused or unexcused) will be disqualified for the conferment of Completion Certificate.

Introductory Speech: This is a speech of Self-Introduction based on a national newspaper or magazine article (such as The Phnom Penh Post, The Cambodia Daily, the Khmer Times. Select an item to speak about which relates to your life in some way. Warning: This assignment is about YOU - it is not about summarizing an article on the date of your birth. The other option is to bring an object and discuss how it relates to your life. Informative Speech: The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about some person, object, process, concept or event. A full-sentence outline and bibliography are required. The use of an audience analysis survey and visual aid is recommended. Power Point is mandatory.

TV Interview This is to debrief information or development regarding a particular event. Interview of this nature is usually very brief, so the trainees have to master the techniques to speak under time pressure. Expected questions need to be developed. A coherent and cascade flow of arguments are needed. It will be recorded. Persuasive Speech: This speech assignment is to persuade the audience for or against a question of policy. In addition to a full-sentence outline, audience analysis and bibliography, the use of a visual aid is highly recommended. Note: PowerPoint is mandatory. Special Occasion Speech: A speech designed to fulfill the objectives of a designated special occasion. Speakers may choose from the following options: (1) an “after-dinner” speech, using an imaginary professional career as the basis for the speech; (2) a commemorative speech honoring a famous historical person or event; or (3) a “grand narrative” speech – using a narrative to tell a family story that has been passed down to you which contains a particular moral or cultural insight. The front side of one 4”x 6” index card is allowed. Impact Speech: The trainees may choose either a speech to inform or to persuade. An outline (speaker’s choice), audience analysis, bibliography and visual aid are required. Note: PowerPoint is not needed. The front side of one 4”x 6” index card is allowed.
