Ensuring the vitality of public buildings

public buildings

Every day all over the world, elevators, escalators and autowalks enable millions of public buildings to function effectively and connect seamlessly to the surrounding urban environment. They do this by ensuring the efficient flow of people into them, through them and out of them. But what should you look for in an elevators, escalators and autowalks for a public building?

Compact size

Fire prevention

In most public buildings, small or large, space is precious. You need to look for features that free up space.

Adherence to fire regulations is not enough. Features such as oil-free systems that reduce the risk of fire starting in the first place are vital. This is a key requirement on cruise liners.

Attractive designs Architects want to smoothly integrate elevators and escalators into their building designs and therefore look for attractive designs and decorations that are easy to customize.

Maintainability You need your equipment to be professionally maintained so that it doesn’t break down in the first place. Preventive maintenance is the key.

Reliability "Out-of-order" means compromised safety and bottlenecks. You need durable elevators and escalators, capable of running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, indoors and outdoors, in the most demanding environments.

Green, clean and quiet Oil-free escalators are increasingly being specified for public buildings. The absence of oil makes them easier to keep clean and attractive, and speeds up the cleaning process to reduce equipment downtime.

Silent operation is also important – in libraries for example. Safe and easy to use An elevator should have clear signalization and buttons; an escalator should be well-lit and signposted. Safety – especially for children and the elderly – is paramount, as is wheelchair access. Heavy-duty Traffic flow is frequently heavy in public buildings. Just imagine a city center metro station. Or a sports stadium after a big match! Your transportation equipment should be able to comfortably handle traffic in peak periods and guide them in the right direction.

KONE elevators The space-saving features of KONE elevators, combined with their attractive design packages and reliable, energy-efficient operation, have led to their installation in public buildings throughout the world.

A choice of platform

The power you need

And attractive too!

KONE elevators for public buildings are based on either the KONE MonoSpace or the KONE MiniSpace® platform. The choice depends mainly on the size of building and the passenger flow (KONE MiniSpace is more suitable for higher buildings).

Both platforms are based on the highly reliable KONE EcoDisc hoisting invention, which offers exceptional power and performance.

Elevators based on both platforms offer a consistent visual offering and seamlessly integrate in a variety of buildings thanks to pre-engineered or tailored car designs and alternative door systems, complemented by a broad selection of landing and car fixture designs.

Reliable, high performance Both platforms offer reliable operation, outstanding traffic performance and a smooth ride – the result of low rotational speeds of the motor, and the V3F variable frequency drive which prevents current peaks and ensures excellent stopping accuracy.

No oil and low energy usage The low friction, gearless construction of the KONE EcoDisc leads to extremely low levels of wear and reduces energy consumption to half that of a similar geared installation. In addition, KONE EcoDisc is more efficient and compact than traditional gearless machines. And no oil is required, reducing fire risk and environmental pollution.

Exceptionally spaceefficient • The KONE MonoSpace elevator platform needs no machine room at all! • The KONE MiniSpace elevator platform needs only a small machine room (located above the shaft and occupying only 40% of the space required by machine rooms of conventional traction elevators).

Heavyweight deliveries are no problem! Certain KONE elevators are specially developed for the transportation of freight in public buildings – even up to 4000 kg with a machine-room-less elevator! Enjoy the view! Scenic elevators add value to a public building in terms of beauty and elegance, and increase the visibility of passengers and the surroundings. KONE elevators are available with optional glass walls, while a fully customizable scenic car can be provided to meet specific requirements.

programs, further increases availability.

Chain is lubricated for life

Attractive lighting

The KONE ECO3000 Chain has an innovative water- and dust-resistant design. It is lubricated for life, which avoids downtime, reduces the risk of fire, and protects the environment. Intelligent controller increases availability The fully digital Controller can be combined with a KONE elevator monitoring system and the building management system to optimize escalator availability. Monitoring those components subject to normal wear and tear, and applying preventive maintenance

A well-lit escalator is a safer escalator – especially during nighttime operation or in underground installations. It also adds to the building’s attractiveness and enhances passenger flow. Examples of KONE ECO3000 lighting possibilities include skirt spots; skirt continuous lighting; handrail lighting; balustrade lights; and inside truss lighting.

An emphasis on safety Safety features include 1-meter high balustrades (throughout the length of the escalator), 3-mm thick skirtings, a onepiece safety step, and brushed skirt deflectors to further minimize the risk of entrapment. Sprinklers reduce the risk of fire, while halogen-free flame-retardant cables avoid toxic emissions if ignited. Needless to say, KONE escalators comply with all relevant EN, BS and ANSI international codes, as well as with the appropriate country codes.

Designed to be ecologically sound

ecological

KONE elevators and escalators embody KONE’s commitment to reuse and recycle as many products and components as possible, and are amongst the industry’s most environmentally sound transportation concepts.

Recent enhancements

• 97% of KONE MonoSpace materials are now recyclable • Energy consumption during manufacturing has been reduced by 20% • No harmful components such as phthalates or isocyanates are used in KONE elevators and escalators • Some wall panel and flooring laminates are made with recyclable materials Energy-efficiency is a prime focus The power consumption of the KONE EcoDisc is only half that of comparable conventional systems. Significant cost savings are also achieved by the use of lower duty risers and fuses, made possible by a peak starting current of just

30-40% of that of equivalent traction units. Different operation modes of KONE ECO3000 escalators such as load-dependent operation, stand-by operation and automatic stop-and-go also enhance energyefficiency. The absence of oil removes the risk of soil contamination and fire that are constant threats in conventional systems.

Life Cycle Assessment The environmental impact "from birth to retirement" of an elevator or escalator, including the total energy consumption and the use of natural resources, is fully taken into account by using various tools such as Life Cycle Assessment.

This is an objective evaluation of the environmental impact of a product, from the extraction and selection of raw materials to its assembly, transportation, distribution, use and final safe disposal. All materials are carefully selected Emphasis is placed on selecting recyclable, energy-friendly materials. Other important decisions are avoiding or reducing the use of paint or other highly polluting processes; designing more structure rather than using more material; and striving to reduce the total energy consumption.
