Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in Clinical Practice A 4-day Workshop By Professor Ronald Teague 2-3 and 11-12 January 2014 I. Rationale This is one of the core psychotherapy courses which is indespencible for a practicing psychiatrist and psychologist. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy was the first psychotherapeutic method developed and still is considered by many to be one of the essential skills that every practicing psychotherapist needs. Whether or not the psychiatrist or psychologist indends to become a psychotherapist, the basic skills and ideas in psychodynamic psychotherapy will prove useful to other activities of the practicing mental health professional, such as assessment, program development, clinical supervsion and consultation. II. Course Description, Goals, Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment A. Course Description: The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with a rudimentary understanding of the theory and techniques of dynamic psychotherapy . It aims to equip participants the ability to evaluate a client from a dynamic point of view and be able to perform basic psychotherapeutic interventions using dynamic therapeutic strategies. Special attention will be given to the special needs of native Han and other Chinese populations. B. Content Description: An introduction to the theory and practice of psychodynamic clinical intervention. The course addresses concepts, processes and techniques that are common among various contemporary approaches including object relations, ego psychology and self psychology. C. Instructor Assumptions: The professor assumes that eavh participants has a rudimentary understanding of the most basic ideas in psychoanalytic theory. Finally he assumes that each student has been in a at least a clinical practicum for a minimum one year and has cases to present in Class. D. Goals: The Primary goal of this workshop is to ready the participants to be able to use on going dynamic clinical supervison. This workshop does not fully prepair the participants to make clinical interventions from a psychodynamic perspective. It will give participants a basic

conceptual frame to evaluate clinical situations which include but are not limited to psychotherapy and psychodiagnostic evaluations. Participants will gain the basic psychodyamic interventions skills which will then need to be mastered under the guidance of a trained psychodyamically oriented clinical supervisor. E. To understand the formative ideas of psychodyamic theory To know how to evaluate a patient from using a psychodynamic perspective To know how to use the psychodynamic interpretive technique To know how to maintain the psychodynamic clinical frame To know how to use the psychodynamic receptive listening technique To know how to think about clinical cases of diverse populations using the psychodynamic model 7. To understand the cultural assumptions as well as the historical context of the development of psychodynamic theory. 8. Be able to detect transference and counter-transference reactions in the clinical setting 9. Be able to manage resistances in psycho-therapy 10. To understand the rudiments of the psychodynamic clinical interpretations. F. Instructional Strategy: The class time will be divided in to sixteen equal sessions. Each Session will take 75-90 minutes. There will be three sessions of lecture and one clinical case session per day. The entire lecture series will be completed in four full days. III. About the speaker: Ronald W. Teague, PhD, FAClinP, ABPP Founding Professor California School of Professional Psychology of Alliant International University. Specialties and Interests:   

He taught at the Sacramento and Hong Kong Campuses where he was the director of the Analytic Psychology Emphasis. He teaches courses in        

Psycho-dynamic Psychotherapy, Analytic Psychology, The Clinical Use of Dreams, The Philosophical Underpinnings of Clinical Psychology, The Ethical and Legal Practice of Clinical Psychology, Human Science and Phenomenological Research Methods, Psycho-History, Psycho-Anthropology.

He has taught at the California School of Professional Psychology for over thirty five years. He is a Licensed Psychologist in the State of California, a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology and a Diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has been an Oral Examiner for the California Board of Psychology and the founder of the San Joaquin Psychological Association. He has been sought by several Mental Health Institutions and professional groups. He has an active private practice in California. Target participants: Psychiatrists and psychologists who want to learn psychodynamic psychotherapy to help their clinical work and are motivated to seek further training through on-going clinical supervision will be most encouraged to join us. Other clinicians with adequate clinical experience are also welcome.
