DO ORDINARY THINGS EXTRAORDINARILY WELL

WELCOME Dear Parents/Carers Welcome to our Prospectus for admission to Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School. I hope you find it useful and informative. Schools are dynamic places and so the information in this prospectus, particularly the curriculum information, is subject to change and development. We hold our Open Evening in September each year and of course are happy to answer any specific questions at any time. Bishop Challoner has a fine tradition of academic, sporting and cultural achievement for its students firmly rooted in the distinctive Catholic values of the school. These distinctive values and the strong pastoral support system at the heart of our school allow us to “Walk With” our students and their families. This close, supportive relationship is something we are extremely proud of and jealously guard. I also believe that children thrive in situations where they understand boundaries and where staff and parents have high expectations of them. This focus on fair, challenging, consistent routines such as behaviour, uniform and homework are referred to as “The Challoner Way”. If you share our values and our approach we welcome your interest in the school and look forward to meeting you. Yours sincerely

J P Wright Headteacher

ABOUT THE SCHOOL Opened in September 1975, Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School is a mixed 11 – 16 school serving a wide area of North Hampshire. It is a voluntary aided day school founded by the Trustees of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth and is maintained by Hampshire Local Authority. Our main feeder Primary Schools are St Anne's, St Bede's and St John the Baptist in the North Hampshire Pastoral Area. We have excellent links with all three schools and the parishes. In addition, students from a wider number of other Primary Schools are admitted to Bishop Challoner. Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School is oversubscribed and seeks to support all members of the school community to grow and develop in a supportive Catholic community. We set and achieve high standards in all that we do and expect students to “do ordinary things, extraordinarily well.” We have a strong Chaplaincy and Pastoral team to support students and families. We describe this central mission of our school as “Walking with each other”. Students are encouraged to participate in service and charitable activities and to take advantage of a wide range of extra-curricular visits and activities. We set great store by excellent standards of uniform, behaviour and attitudes to work. We describe these expectations as “The Challoner Way”. We are exceptionally well supported by parents and carers. Students’ progress to local sixth form colleges, high quality employment and apprenticeships when they leave Bishop Challoner. Each year many students gain entry to Universities including Oxbridge and the Russell Group. Whatever the academic results of our students, we aspire for all of them to achieve their potential. Music, Drama and PE are also dynamic elements of our school with regular school productions, chamber concerts, workshops and sports fixtures throughout the year. Students experience an exciting, often challenging all round education at Bishop Challoner. Everyone in the school community gives and expects a lot. We are proud of every one of our present and former students; if you visit us you will see these things in action. Headteacher: Chair of Governors: School Hours: Office Hours:

CURRICULUM KS3 Curriculum

Students follow a broad and balanced curriculum based upon the new national curriculum in years 7-9. Our philosophy is that this forms part of a 5 year curriculum with many of the skills being taught laying the foundations for ways of learning in years 10-11 as the new GCSEs begin to be implemented. The extended core of RE, English, Maths, Science now incorporates the humanities, History and Geography, and Modern Foreign Languages, Spanish and French, preparing students for their EBACC studies at GCSE level. We also offer Latin and Italian to a small cohort of pupils and see this as a potential area of growth. Our commitment to the performing and creative arts sees all students studying Music, Art, PE and Drama and this breadth is reflected in our belief that Design Technology and Information Technology completes a student’s necessary diet with Resistant Materials, Computing, Information Technology and Catering being taught in a carousel throughout years 7-9. At the end of year 9 students follow subjects of their choice complementing their EBACC pathways. The final element of a year 7-9s study is the PSHE and careers programme which enables them to learn about healthy relationships, the world of work and life skills.

Choosing a KS4 Curriculum Pathway

The curriculum in the upper school differs in several ways from the curriculum in the first three years. In years ten and eleven, some subjects remain in the compulsory core which means all pupils study them, other subjects are offered for you to choose which ones you would prefer to study.

CHAIR OF GOVERNORS Dear Parents/Carers On behalf of the Governing Body I am delighted at the interest you have shown in our school. I hope that the information you receive will persuade you that our school is the right place for your child. Over the years we have steadily built on our successes until we are now recognised locally, within the Diocese and County as an outstanding school. We firmly believe that our Ethos underpins the curriculum, the work across the school, and the resulting success of our students. All who work and learn at Bishop Challoner play their part in the “Challoner Way” based on our Mission Statement and the words firmly held by Bishop Richard Challoner “Do ordinary things extraordinarily well”. The school is also proud of its achievements outside of formal learning. Our students have opportunities to participate in many extra-curricular activities involving other schools, organisations and County opportunities. They do this with great pride, enthusiasm and success. We work closely with our three main feeder schools. St Anne’s Primary, St Bede’s Primary both in Basingstoke, and St John the Baptist Primary in Andover. Our roll is oversubscribed and we are involved in planning for our future capacity. Governors and Senior Leaders in the school are currently working with the relevant authorities to consider the way forward in accommodating the rising numbers wishing to attend our school. Yours sincerely and God Bless

Kate Webb Chair of Governors

ETHOS Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School is a mixed 11-16 non-selective Catholic School in the Diocese of Portsmouth. The Governors and Headteacher lead the school under the authority of the Bishop. The school serves the Catholic Community of Basingstoke and the surrounding areas but also seeks to serve families who wish to educate their children in a faith school and to encourage positive relationships between all people of faith. The spiritual, moral, academic, social and creative needs of the young people in our case are always our priority. We believe that we are all children of God, and that Jesus Christ is the Way, Truth and Life. (Jn. 14:6) “Jesus is our teacher and we seek to follow his example” This belief that we are all children of God leads us to offer all of our work and endeavour to Him. We believe that we are all made in the image of God and are surrounded by His unconditional love. We will always try to create a Christian environment in which all people are encouraged to fulfil their potential and to demonstrate their love of God through prayer, service, conduct and work. Bishop Challoner is a worshipping school firmly rooted in the traditions and practices of the Universal Church. With the Eucharist at its heart we affirm the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and inspire our lives. We recognise that Catholic Schools do not exist in a vacuum and are subject to political, social, moral and other external pressures. Our students must be helped to be in a position to make the right decisions, to take their placein wider society and to experience an excellent academic and vocational education. While Religious Education, PSHE and Careers Education and Guidance will play a critical role in this all adults who work in Bishop Challoner Catholic School have a key contribution to make to both promote and defend our Ethos. We are also aware of the target driven culture that schools are now forced to operate in, while we will always set ourselves challenging targets we recognise that “success” in a Catholic School goes beyond that measured by Performance Tables. In Bishop Challoner School we seek to support all members of our community as they develop and deepen their relationship with God. We recognise that we are called to work and learn in Bishop Challoner Catholic School and we aspire to meet the challenges placed before us as we progress on our faith journey and support others in theirs always aware of God’s unconditional love for us. We are committed to educate our students to be active citizens and make a positive contribution to the wider community. This vision of our purpose in Catholic Schools lies at the very heart of Bishop Challoner School and therefore defines our professional practice and relationships. This Christ centred ethos is what makes Bishop Challoner Catholic School distinctive and guides us as we seek to serve.
