BAND Beginning Band is an introductory course to playing a musical woodwind, brasswind or percussion instrument. Band is a class that meets every day for one class period and is a yearlong course. You do not need to have any prior musical experience to participate in the band. We teach everything from how to read music to how to make a sound and play your chosen instrument. Students who have studied piano or another instrument will find that some things come a little quicker early on, but daily practice and effort are the best indicators for success in band. Beginning Band classes are grouped by instrument, and your child would have beginning band class every day. In 6th grade, band students have very few after school commitments. Our beginners have two dress rehearsals after school, perform in two evening concerts (Winter and Spring), and participate in one music contest in sixth grade. CAN I TRY THE INSTRUMENTS? There are many instruments available in the beginning band. Not sure if you would like to play a band instrument? Come try them all! On Saturday, February 22nd, you can come and try every single band instrument, to see if one is a good fit for you! It’s fun, easy, and the only time you get to play everything!!! There is no obligation to join band—but come try the instruments!

www.CobbBand.net The WOODWINDS: Flute The flute is the highest sounding instrument in the band. It is played by blowing across a hole and pressing down the keys to produce different notes. Clarinet The clarinet is a reed instrument that is played by blowing into a mouthpiece and reed combination and pressing down keys to produce different notes. Clarinets are usually made of wood and produce a very beautiful and versatile sound. Oboe The oboe is one of the most distinctive instruments in the band. It is a double reed instrument, which means that sound is produced on the oboe by blowing into a joined set of two reeds. Oboe players are generally intelligent and independent. Private lessons are most advantageous to success on this instrument.

Students who wish to play in the BAND need to join band in the 6th grade.

THE INSTRUMENTS OF THE BAND, continued Bassoon The bassoon is also a double-reed instrument, like the oboe, but it has a deep bass voice. Bassoons are made of wood and look like a long, straight tube. Bassoon players are generally intelligent and independent students. Private les sons are most advantageous to success on this instrument. Saxophone The saxophone is played similarly to the clarinet in that a single reed attached to a mouthpiece creates the saxophone’s sound. (This class has a limited size) The BRASSWINDS: Trumpet/Cornet The trumpet produces the highest sound in the brass family. Its tone is produced when the player buzzes his or her lips into the trumpet mouthpiece. The trumpet is a versatile instrument. French Horn The French horn, or simply “horn” is one of the most beautiful and versatile instruments in the brass family. Its sound is produced in the same manner as the trumpet’s sound. The horn has a very wide range and can play both very high and very low notes. Trombone The trombone can be recognized by its long slide, which is moved to various positions to create different notes. The trombone is played with a medium sized mouthpiece that suits players with many different physical characteristics.

Euphonium/Baritone The euphonium is often recognized as the instrument that looks like a mini tuba. It uses the same mouthpiece as the trombone and is also suited to players with many different physical characteristics. The euphonium has a very distinct dark sound.

Tuba The tuba is the largest and lowest instrument in the brass family. It produces a very rich, deep, low sound, making it one of the most important instruments in the band. The tuba is played with a large mouthpiece. Percussion Percussion in beginning band focuses on mallet percussion and snare drum technique. We also familiarize ourselves with the timpani and all accessory percussion instruments (crash cymbals, tambourine, tom-toms, triangle and many more). Students wishing to play percussion must complete a special screening process in order to be selected. (This class has a limited size)

ORCHESTRA

Beginning orchestra is the first step to becoming a great string player! In beginning orchestra, students have a choice of playing VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, BASS, or HARP. HARP All students will be taught how to hold and play their instrument, how to read music, and how to be a member of a performing group. We take students of all ability levels, and no prior experience is necessary. We will teach you everything you need to know! Starting orchestra in the sixth grade is the best way to prepare you for a fun and fulfilling musical experience throughout middle school, high school, and beyond! Each year, beginning orchestra students perform several concerts including our Demo Concert, Fall Concert, the Winter Orchestra Concert and the Spring Pops Concert. Beginners will have some after school rehearsals on the day of a concert, but otherwise have few after school commitments. Students also participate in the annual Sandy Lake Orchestra Contest! CAN I TRY THE INSTRUMENTS? If you think you are interested in playing an orchestra instrument, or just want a chance to see what it is like, then come to our “Try the Instrument Day!” On Saturday, February 8, you can come and try every orchestra instrument, to see if one is a good fit for you! It’s fun, easy, and the only time you get to play everything!!! It’s also a chance for us to measure you for the right size instrument. One of the wonderful things about orchestra is that the string instruments are built in a variety of sizes. Small or tall—there is an instrument just the right size for you.

Harp The Harp is a beautiful instrument. Beginning harp players use a lever harp, but will eventually learn pedal harp. The harp can be played solo or as part of symphony orchestras. In order to start the harp in the 6th grade, 2 years of piano experience is required. We have a limited number of spots for harp each year.

VIOLIN The violin is the smallest member of the string orchestra and they play the soprano part (the highest part) of the music. This is a very fun and exciting instrument to play. It can play any style of music and is frequently used for “fiddle” music.

VIOLA The viola is slightly larger than the violin with a richer, deeper sound. It has a beautiful tone that has attracted students for hundreds of years. It can be both a solo and accompaniment instrument. Viola is frequently heard in pop and hip hop music.

CELLO The cello has a gorgeous dark, rich tone that is heard in heartwarming music everywhere! Cello can be a great solo or orchestral instrument. It is also amazing for rock music!

BASS Bass rocks! The largest of the string orchestra instruments, it plays the lowest, deepest notes. Did you know that string bass and electric bass guitar have the same strings and note names? The only difference is that an electric bass has frets and you hold it horizontally, while the string bass is played sitting or standing vertically, or upright!

Students who wish to play in the ORCHESTRA need to join orchestra in the 6th grade.

THEATRE And…Action! Whether you are interested in being the next great actor or not, Theatre is still a warm and inviting place where you can come to be yourself, get involved with others, and actively participate in all manner of creative activities and projects. We act, we sing, we move, we shake, etc. You don’t have to “know” how to do any of these things, but you’ll sure learn a lot and have fun trying. We even try our hand at painting, building puppets, creating sound f/x, and playing around with color and lighting from time to time. Theatre will greatly help you to expand your creativity, gain confidence, become an effective communicator, build teamwork skills and enrich your life by developing a greater appreciation of Drama. Come one! Come all!

Course Curriculum This class will provide students with practice in: Basic acting and Technical Theatre techniques, improvisation, body movement, character development, scene work, monologue study, stage direction, script analysis, and audience and performer etiquette.

Performances This is where some students think they’ll be nervous. Don’t be! This is the FUN part! In groups and individually, students will prepare and perform scenes in class that demonstrate personality, character, and improvisation. Students can try their hand at lighting, sound, body movement, pantomime and performance techniques. There are also two school wide plays, opportunities to work on a Tech crew, advanced competitions for upper level classes, field trips, shows, and lots and lots of laughing.

COBB CHOIR The Cobb choir is a great opportunity for young singers who have a love for singing and learning about music. In this class, students will learn proper singing techniques and sight reading skills through a variety of songs, vocal exercises, and demonstrations. Students will also learn performance skills and basic music theory skills. Chosen selections will prepare students to sing accurately in an ensemble setting and prepare them for solo performances. The choir repertoire is selected from a variety of styles including, but not limited to, classical, pop, Broadway musicals, and jazz. Choir students will have many performance opportunities such as concerts, contests, pep rallies, school assemblies, field trips, and more!
