THE FOREST HILLS JEWISH CENTER

FHJC Intergenerational Shabbaton The term shabbaton means an event or program of education, usually celebration, that is held on Shabbat or over an entire weekend. By calling a program a shabbaton, rather than a retreat, one signifies recognition of the importance of Shabbat in the event. Join us on the weekend of February 1-2 for an FHJC Intergenerational Shabbaton! Leave home without leaving Forest Hills; the price is right! The place is right! Activities are right! Starting with candle-lighting on Friday and ending with havdalah on Saturday, share a full Shabbat together with your FHJC family, including meals, prayer, song and study. We’ll have time to talk and get to know each other better, time to sing, and time to study a range of interesting topics. Enjoy a special Friday night dinner (reservations required at $25 per adult and $12 per child age 3-12) and stay to hear our featured speaker, Ruth Baran Gerold, who will both sing and discuss the Yiddush music of Mordechai Gebertig. You may not know his name but you will recognize his music. Saturday will begin with our traditional and always meaningful Shabbat service led by Rabbi Skolnik and Hazzan Rosenblum, followed by a delicious hot kiddush luncheon (that means cholent, among other things). We thank our kiddush sponsors: Soraya & Frank Baharestani, Judy & Matt Beizer, Judy & Jack Gostl, Temma & Al Kingsley, Valerie & Jack Leibler, Anita & Murray Miller, Jill & Jonathan Mohrer, Anise & Phil Parnes, Pauline & Mark Raphael, and Jill & Meir Toshav. After lunch it’s time to learn; choose to look for the Ark of the Covenant with Dr. Jay Luger or learn basic synagogue choreography with Dr. Judy Beizer. Perhaps Rabbi Paul Drazen's discussion of Keeping Conservatively Kosher piques your interest or a discussion of Jewish Children's Literature with Robin Skolnik is more to your taste. While the adults are improving their minds, there will be activities for the children too. This is just a small sample of what we are planning. Minha at 4PM, a little earlier than normal, gives us time for a Seudah Sh'lishit (third meal of Shabbat) with singing and the day’s final presentation by Rabbi Skolnik and Hazzan Rosenblum, before we daven ma'ariv and make havdalah together. The complete program will be posted on the web and available in the office by January 7. Look for it and make your reservation for your place at the table!

Progressive Dinner

Saturday evening, February 9, 2013, 8:00 pm Join old friends and meet new ones, share a homemade dinner at a Center member's table, and enjoy a feast of desserts at the home of Temma and Al Kingsley. Call the Center Office to make your reservation. Watch for details.

Amazing things are happening at FHJC every day. The METNY Region and United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism inform us that FHJC is the recipient of 4 Gold Kehillah Recognition Awards: for Jewish Art and Music: Chanukah Music From Around the World and Maoz Tzur: The Mystery and the Music; for Early Childhood: Nursery School and Kindergarten Tikun Olam; for Fundraising: Used to Wear It; for Social Action: 15 Ways to Change the World. In addition, we are so proud to announce that Judy Gostl is the recipient of the Ernest L. Rothschild Award for outstanding synagogue leadership and special efforts to affect and change people’s lives and further Conservative Judaism in her congregation. Yasher Koach to everyone involved in these award-winning programs, and to Judy.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2013

From the Rabbi’s Study Rabbi Gerald C. Skolnik Gaining a New Perspective As I pass the half-year mark in my Presidency of the Rabbinical Assembly, I sometimes wonder whether the average congregant of the Forest Hills Jewish Center notices any change in my routine, or the synagogue’s. To the casual observer, most things are as they usually would be. One who comes on Shabbat morning would most often find me in services, sitting where I’ve sat for the past thirty-oneplus years. No change! But in truth, the past six months have been anything but “business as usual” for me. I have traveled to Argentina and Israel on Rabbinical Assembly business, and the reason why most people would not have noticed is that in both instances, I made the eleven-hour-trip each way in between two consecutive Shabbatot! I left for Argentina on a Monday night and returned on Friday morning, and for Israel on a Sunday and again returned on a Friday morning. There was surely fatigue and jet lag to reckon with, but I was able to be at services! I did have to miss some synagogue events, like our annual Torah Fund Luncheon, which I deeply regretted, but I have made a conscious effort to be away as little as possible over Shabbat (that will not be possible in February, when I am away with the Conference of Presidents Mission, but it is rare…). These new responsibilities have certainly given me a broader perspective on our Movement, and visiting other Jewish communities so very different from our own has certainly enriched my appreciation of the depth and breadth of variety that exists within what we call Conservative/Masorti Judaism. There are core similarities between us all in terms of how we understand the unfolding of Jewish culture, tradition and law, but the way we actually practice and live out our Judaism often differs significantly. I was fascinated and enormously impressed by the rabbis and synagogue leaders I met in Buenos Aires, but I’m not The Message USPS 340-300 The Forest Hills Jewish Center, 106-06 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, NY 11375-4248. 718 263-7000, Fax: 718 520- 4369. sure I would necessarily feel comfortable “davening” in each of the shuls I visited. That is exactly as it should be. There is room for much variety within our movement. I have often thought that, were synagogues here in the Diaspora wise, they would not only offer, but also strongly urge their clergy members to visit other congregations on Shabbat on a fairly regular basis- and not just in their own community. It has been a fascinating and humbling exercise to see how colleagues conduct their services in different parts of the world, but one need not go all that far to find significant differences in style and substance. Again- one person’s (or rabbi’s) cup of tea will not taste pleasing to everyone, but that is why God made us all different. And sometimes- just sometimes- the best feeling of all is to visit another synagogue and then return home, only to discover that you really like where you are rooted. I love when congregants share that kind of feeling with me! I hope you all get the chance to explore other avenues of religious expressions- and I also hope that it always feels good to come home.

Annual Shiva Minyan Breakfast Please join us on Sunday morning, January 6, 2013 from 9:00 to 10:30, immediately following the 8:20 A.M. minyan, in conjunction with the Minyan Club RABBI GERALD C. SKOLNIK will be our Guest Speaker A hot breakfast will be served. $11 per person Reservations required, please call the FHJC office. The Shiva Minyan is the all-important support group that is there at times of personal loss and pain. It is made up of the men, women and post-bar/bat mitzvah boys and girls who, on short notice, go to the home of the bereaved to make up the minyan required for the family to say Kaddish. Co-Chairs Hal Berkowitz and Allan Rolnick urge all those who have participated in the Shiva Minyanim to join us at the Annual Shiva Minyan Breakfast, which again this year is being joined by the Minyan Club. We invite everyone who supports the Shiva and Daily Minyanim to attend, as well as those who received the services of a shiva minyan. Hal Berkowitz and Allan Rolnick, Co-Chairs

Hazzan Henry R. Rosenblum

Notes from the Hazzan As I write this, if you walk through the halls of our Preschool you will know instantly that Hanukkah is here. There are decorations on the walls, children dressed up deliciously as Maccabees, dreidels or candles singing the songs of the holiday. We all know those wonderful songs from our childhood but is that really the full extent of Hanukkah music? I just took down 5 cd’s from my shelves that I want to draw to your attention. Music is one of life’s wondrous ways of dispelling darkness and especially so in the case of the Festival of Light.

nukkah” was produced by Craig Taubman as the first recording in his “Celebrate” series. Among others, the artists include Craig (who used to sing and perform for Disney in Los Angeles), Joe Black (one of the most vibrant forces in today’s contemporary Jewish music scene), Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, and Debbie Friedman whose name I’m sure you know.

The first recording is the most classic of them all. Entitled “A Hanukkah Celebration,” this cd is one of 50 produced by the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music. It contains traditional songs and original settings by 19th- and 20th-century composers, arranged for soloists, children’s choirs and adult ensembles. It is a must for every Jewish household.

The fifth cd is my favorite. “The Spirit of Hanukkah” is part of a series of recordings which are a joint project of the Cantors Assembly and the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and is available from the United Synagogue at USCJ.org. Featuring many of my colleagues, this recording presents Hanukkah favorites both traditional and contemporary. There are traditional blessings, songs in Yiddish, Hebrew, English and Ladino, songs for children and songs for adults. This year I urge you to expand your Jewish musical horizons and make Hanukkah music an integral part of your celebration.

The second recording is by Jon Simon, a wonderful jazz pianist. In fact, it is entitled “Hanukkah and All That Jazz.” It is a wonderful recording of jazz interpretations of the traditional holiday songs utilizing contemporary jazz harmonies and improvisations. It is a great way to see that Hanukkah still speaks to us today in the language of the 21st century. The third recording will certainly appeal to the teenagers in your house as well as the teenager within you. “Celebrate Ha-

The fourth recording is by the Zamir Chorale of Boston and is entitled “Seasons of Our Joy.” This is a wonderful recording of choral music for all of the Jewish holidays, including of course Hanukkah. It is another piece of “required listening” for every Jewish family. These 4 cd’s are all available on Amazon and make great gifts in addition to providing you true listening pleasure.

By the time you read this, Hanukkah will have come and gone. I hope that its light continues to shine for you in the new year. Hazzan Henry R. Rosenblum

The President’s Pen Although our Forest Hills Community was spared the worst of the calamity cast by SS (super-storm) Sandy, many of our neighbors were not so lucky. Our neighbors in Howard Beach and Rockaway to the south and places like Oceanside, Atlantic Beach and Long Beach and Teaneck, New Jersey, were absolutely devastated. As a religious community, the Rabbi, Executive Director, School Directors and I reached out to all of our networks to seek ways that we can help. We offered our extra Torahs (after consulting with our insurance company) to congregations that lost theirs. We welcomed a child whose family was relocated into our nursery school. We offered our Center for services for life cycle events to members of congregations that couldn’t serve their commu-

nities. This resulted in one very special Shabbat Brit of the grandson of Rabbi Stuart Saposh and his wife Linda, for the celebration that was supposed to take place in Teaneck. Their heartfelt letter of gratitude brought home the importance of community, in the religious sense. A special Yasher Koach to the Parents’ Association which immediately sprung into action and collected clothing and dry goods that were distributed to those in need, and to the Men’s Club for reaching out to help our neighbors. The people who received these gifts were not accustomed to being beneficiaries of charity but it was heartwarming to them and to those who donated to know that we are “our brother’s keeper.” I also want to thank the administration, particularly Debbie Gregor, for taking all measures to protect our building. We had a staff person on premises through the entire storm and protective measures were taken to secure the building.

Though we have all had to deal with the adversity over the last several weeks, we should not lose sight of the positive and exciting things that we do. We are so excited to announce our most deserving honoree at this year’s Dinner Dance: Jack Gostl. We will also make a special presentation to Cantor Erno Grosz upon celebrating his 50th year since he joined the clergy at FHJC. It will be a wonderful night and I look forward to sharing it with you. Although we had to postpone many events including the Casino Night, we look forward to presenting that program on March 9. Please stay tuned to www.fhjc.org and check the weekly eShabbat Shalom delivered to your email address for all programming news. Wishing that you all stay warm during the winter season and reminding you that a good Friday night or Shabbat service is the best way to warm the heart and soul. Joe Fox, President

Membership Update While it may be very cold outside during the months of January and February, inside the FHJC it will be warm and cozy with many events planned which should appeal to our varied membership. On Saturday, January 26 we will be having our annual Coffee House Event where the many talented members of our congregation will be entertaining all of us with their musical skills. Of course coffee and snacks will be served. The weekend of February 1-2 will host our first synagogue-wide Shabbaton. This event being planned by the Rabbi and Hazzan will be a very educational and rewarding weekend. More information will be available on flyers as we get closer to the date. Our annual Progressive Dinner will be held on Saturday night, February 9. Purim comes early this year on the secular calendar, Saturday night, February 22. Since most of us will not have to go to work on Sunday, we can stay late on Saturday night and really enjoy the Purim celebration. In addition to the above events, Men’s Club, Sisterhood and Parents’ Association have all planned events during the months of January and February. You may read about them in the sections written by the Presidents of those arms. Al Krieger, Vice President for Membership

Religious School Reflection Reboot. We do it every day in the digital world. We do it each night in the world of physiology. If we are fortunate, we do it annually on vacation. In the Jewish world, we do it every Shabbat and in the educational world over the summer break. This year, as the world gets ready to reboot on the eve of December 31, we are working on rebooting our children's and family Shabbat programming.

bers. It is also a program that we have struggled with since before I came to the Forest Hills Jewish Center, at times more successfully than others. We have been actively working on rebooting our programs since the end of last year. Our Junior Congregation leaders have been meeting regularly. We are talking to other congregations, exploring what we have learned at staff and School Board meetings and looking to see what aspects of our own successes as well as the successes of others can be adapted to create a more cohesive, complete and compelling Shabbat program for our children, youth and families.

Junior Congregation has an illustrious past at the Forest Hills Jewish Center. Its history is rich and it helped to shape the Jewish lives of many of our present mem-

As of January you will begin to see a change in our scheduling, programming, and Shabbat options. It will not happen all at once and we may need to reboot

News from Nursery School Teaching children manners equips them with the social skills needed to be successful in life. It may take years to master until we refine these behaviors, but the effects definitely pay off. At any opportunity, parents are encouraged to promote these social skills. We are confident that you, working together with us, will promote these invaluable skills. Start Early – Between the ages of 2 and 5, most children are eager to please so they are most receptive to learning the rules of polite conduct. If we start with developmentally appropriate manners, we can then expand our expectations as children grow. If we start with common courtesies such as “please,” “thank you,” “you must stay seated during meal times,” that are easy to understand, you can make your way up to harder ones such as “look at someone when you speak to them” and “return greetings when you are addressed.” Offer Incentives – It is okay to motivate your child with a manners chart, focusing on one or two manners at a time and

offering a reward for the desired behavior. When the behavior becomes consistent, add another one or two. Convey Clear Expectations – Be very specific with what you want to see. “When we go to the party, I want you to ____ and _____.” This gives your child a chance to succeed. If you are going to be in a new situation, make sure to talk to your child before and let him/her know what your expectations are. Role-playing is a fun way to build social graces. Make Use of Resources – There are many children’s books that focus on manners using their favorite characters. When watching television or movies with your child, always point out the good manners. This is an excellent way to reinforce learning. When you see a family member or others using positive manners, point that out as well. Praising Good Manners – Praise your child for his/her politeness, as this builds self-confidence and self-esteem as well as reinforces the skills you are teaching him/ her. Consistency is the key to building manners. Remember that children learn by examples.

Lynn Lancaster along the way. I ask for your patience, help, feedback and most of all participation in our programs as well as the process. Let us know what is working, not just what is broken. Understand that we are trying to meet the needs of a population that is diverse in many ways. Most of all, be willing to participate. I hope that you have had a chance to reboot over the December break and are ready to join us in this exciting endeavor. Happy 2013! May it be a year of health, happiness and positive change.

Youth Department News Hi everyone! I hope you are enjoying the holiday season. Here in the youth department, we are gearing up for the rest of the year. We successfully completed our kinnus (even with the change of date) and it was amazing. But don’t take it from me, check out what the USYers had to say. Shelby Cohen, an FHJC USY senior and a co-chair of the kinnus wrote: “As you probably know, FHJC recently hosted an amazing USY event, Kiryah Fall Kinnus. This being my senior year, yet only my third kinnus, I was so excited for it to be in my home chapter. The weekend went smoothly from a co-chair perspective and was incredibly fun as a USYer too. From the awesome programs the board had planned for us, to the Country Fair and special guest horse Butterscotch that we all completely loved, it was definitely one for the books. FHJC was a great place to have our little hoedown and everyone had a blast. These USY events wouldn't be what they are if it weren't for the places that hosted them. FHJC made it possible for us to have the fantastic weekend that we all had.” A big thank you again to everyone that helped make the kinnus possible, from housing our USYers to the support staff in the building, we could not have done it without you. Stay tuned for more information and new calendars.

The FHJC Youth Department is broken into three age groups, each of which meets weekly in the Youth Lounge: Tseerim – 3rd through 5th grade meets Sundays from 12:30 to 2 pm Kadima – 6th through 8th grade meets Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 pm USY – 9th through 12th grade meets Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 pm Programming ideas, questions about Youth Group or something you would like to share? Parents’ Association Highlights Kol Hakavod and Yasher Koach to everyone in the community who participated in the toy drive so well organized by Mara Silver-Smith and YAC. PA is proud to have been able to participate. Through your generosity, we were able to send toys to Breezy Point in time for their winter festival in mid-December and to contribute toys, books, and clothing, through a victim’s advocacy program to kids and families who are forced into the shelter system in times of domestic crisis. I am so proud of all of us and look forward to many more opportunities to make a real difference in so many people’s lives. With the madness of December behind us, Parents’ Association is looking forward to spring and a number of exciting and enriching activities. Beginning in January, Nursery Parents will be excited to learn that Coach Adam has recently purchased new gymnastics and floor hockey equipment with PA funds. Make sure to check

out the kids’ moves the next time you’re in the gym! Our annual Scholastic Bookfair (which Sandy so rudely interrupted) has been rescheduled for February 10th and 11th. Nursery and Religious School teachers will have wish list boxes available to make donating to your child’s classroom library easy and convenient. We hope to participate in the Empty Bowl Project again this year. This grass-roots effort to end hunger and bring focus to the issues surrounding food in our communities was a great success last year and we are proud to have raised over $600 to help feed hungry New Yorkers through the Food Bank for New York City. Watch for more details soon. As we move into spring, we are gearing up for another planting season in our “Roof Garden.” Last year, we had a few small vegetables, and this year, we hope for an even better crop. Be sure to ask your teachers about when and how your child’s class will be able to participate in this and other PA-sponsored activities that help to strengthen our children’s attachment to Jewish observance and the natural world.

Youth Shabbat has migrated with the weather and will take place in May. PA is thrilled to be able to sponsor “extra goodies” for Kiddush. As always, please feel free to share your program ideas, questions, and concerns with us. We can be reached at [email protected] Shoshanna Segal, PA President

Sisterhood Sisterhood began the year with a discussion of The Invisible Bridge, led by past Center President, Valerie Leibler. Thank you, Valerie, for facilitating a frank examination of this epic and sweeping novel.

In late January, Hazzan Rosenblum will present another exciting program on What’s Hot in Synagogue Music. This will expand upon the themes and composers (Debbie Friedman, Craig Taubman, Shlomo Carlebach, Shira Hadasha) referenced the last time the Hazzan spoke.

We had a warm turnout for this year’s Torah Fund Luncheon, when we honored Ruth Shulim, Past Sisterhood President. Our eloquent Guest Speaker was long-time Center member and second-year Jewish Theological Seminary student, Jason Kirschner.

Looking forward, we are also busy planning a Spring paid-up membership luncheon, a trip to the Jewish Theological Seminary and simcha dancing lessons prior to the Dinner Dance. More information about these and future Sisterhood events will be in Shabbat Shalom, on the ListServ and around the Center.

A special thank you to Torah Fund Co-Chairs, Miriam Chait and Shirley Rossman Zucker, for a wonderful luncheon and your ongoing efforts to make this year’s JTS fundraising campaign a success.

Lastly, through Sisterhood, we learn together, serve our community and make new friendships. New members are always welcome, so join The Sisterhood of Forest Hills Jewish Center, today!

A creative night was had when Rabbi Chana Thompson Shor guided us in a Chanukkah themed paper cutting program. Thank you, Rav Chana, for your patience and inspiration!

We hope to see you at the next Sisterhood event. Anise Parnes, President

Also, a special thank you to Shira Eliaser, niece of Center member Ellen Cogan, for her insightful after-kiddush Torah study, on Shabbat Vayechi, at the end of the December.

Men’s Club It is with great pleasure that I write this article to update the congregation on the happenings of the Forest Hills Jewish Center Men’s Club activities. The past month has been a very difficult and trying time for many in the community of the Conservative movement outside of the Forest Hills community. The hurricane we experienced was like nothing any of us had ever experienced. The Men’s Club wanted to make a difference and did so by making a donation to the Jewish Community for Hanukah. Our Executive Board proposed and purchased $750 in Target gift cards to be distributed to Jewish families devastated by the hurricane. We had two very successful events run by Hal Berkowitz. The first was a great bike trip through Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. A special thank you also needs to go out to Fernando Koatz for his assistance with the trip. The second event was a beer tasting that again was a lot of fun, educational, and very successful. We have two family fun events scheduled for the month of January, and hope all will be able to join us for some good family fun. The first event will be January 5, 2013—a family Havdalah service that we hope to co-sponsor with other clubs within the Forest Hills Jewish Center’s community. Then on January 20, 2013 we will be sponsoring a family Sunday bowling outing at JIB Lanes. They are both going to be a lot of fun, so please look out for the upcoming flyers and join us. Men's Club and Membership are co-sponsoring the annual Coffee House on Saturday, January 26th. Sunday, February 3rd- Super Bowl Sunday- Men's Club will be participating in World Wide Wrap. We will be purchasing

tefillin kits so that families and their children can make a set together. In February, Men's Club will bring back Hearing Men's Voices, and the dates will follow in the next newsletter. With regret, I must inform you that The Federation of Jewish Men's Club dinner has been moved from FHJC to Crest Hollow Country Club, due to the fact that the region has expanded to 29 clubs and they expect over 600 attendees, more than our synagogue can accommodate. The date for the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club dinner also was changed to April 2, 2013. This was a very successful year and we look forward to more participation from our current members as well as new or upcoming members to spur additional interesting discussions on future programming. Lastly, I would like to extend my gratitude and thank you to the entire board for their commitment, dedication, and hard work over the past few months to make these great events happen. I hope everyone had a Happy Hanukah, and watch for further information shortly. Scott Sharinn, Men’s Club President
