ALA actions and achievements

ALA is devoted to expanding awareness of lighting, meeting industry challenges and strengthening sales of lighting products through comprehensive education, communications, marketing and advertising.

BiNational Advertising and Public Relations Program »» Gained 235 million U.S. and Canadian consumer impressions through national advertising and public relations efforts. »» Sustained 24-hour turnaround on nearly 60,000 qualified leads distributed to member showrooms. »» Published fourth issue of Lighting magazine in partnership with Better Homes & Gardens. Provided 165,000 free copies to showrooms. »» Reached 100,000 consumers each month with Bright Ideas, e-newsletter. Also, provided customizable version to showrooms at no charge. »» Sent monthly lighting stories to 5,000 U.S. and Canadian editors. »» Conducted $5,000 Lighting Makeover Sweepstakes, resulting in valuable sales leads from 30,000 consumer entries. »» Produced 27 manufacturer videos, and distributed them on the ALA website, YouTube and Google.

Public Relations and Communications »» Redesigned and launched new website resulting in a 30-percent increase in visitor traffic and an annual cost savings of approximately $25,000 due to in-house hosting of training courses and more customer-friendly online ordering process. »» Produced numerous news and educational member publications, as well as all collateral material for association events and educational offerings.

Education »» Completed update of the 900-page Residential Lighting Training Manual. »» Developed 10 new Lighting Associate training courses, available 24/7. »» Incorporated 24 new webinar courses into online courses (24/7). »» Completed new Advanced Lamps & Light Sources monograph. »» Began work on new system that will allow members to conven­ iently take ALA final exams online (24/7) and track progress.

Education Foundation »» Provided: • $9,000 to help fund educational programs. • 14 training scholarships for members. • Funds to continue to educate the public regarding electrical safety.

Membership »» Returned to a growth mode with a membership increase to 1,340, in spite of a down economy. »» Continued to provide members with meaningful discounts for products and services such as office supplies and market travel.

Finance »» Achieved budgeted objectives including ending the year with income over expenses.

Government/Regulatory Affairs »» Won a major objective regarding limiting testing requirements for the efficiency of LED Energy Star fixtures. This success will save the industry hundreds of thousands of dollars. »» Effectively presented the need for the “Proper Application of Lighting” message to key members of Congress, creating a positive atmosphere for future. »» Won a major victory for ceiling fan members in Canada by persuading NRCanada to reduce costly fan requirements. »» To meet growing Canadian regulations and legislation, ALA created a new Canadian Government Affairs Task Force. »» Continued to successfully fight state-level Interior Design Protection Acts that, if not stopped, would preclude showroom members from being able to offer lighting design services to their customers. »» Worked with with NRCanada to harmonize Canadian and U.S. ceiling fan requirements to preclude the need to satisfy two differing requirements. »» Continued to battle for fair federal and state energy efficiency legislation. Efforts included submitting a proposal that will be an important model for all energy legislation affecting the lighting industry. »» Informed and gained substantial member involvement on Action Calls regarding issues such as health care, card check and tax cut extensions.

Political Action Committee (ALA-PAC) »» Recruited member financial support and collected $44,279 for the two-year election cycle. »» Contributed to eight elected officials (four Democrats and four Republicans) who will be important to association members on key industry issues during the 2011 Congress.

Annual Conference »» Welcomed 502 delegates and guests to the 2010 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nev. »» Achieved an overall Conference rating of 4.5 from attendees, with four being “very satisfied” and five being “extremely satisfied.” Creighton and CJ Bostrom with Lars and Kathy Bostrom of Bostrom Lighting Sales enjoy the Gala Welcome Reception during the 2010 ALA Annual Conference.

Engineering »» Initiated Technology Update, a bimonthly e-newsletter to frequently provide members with important technical information and requirements. »» Had a seat at the table for the development of new Energy Star lighting fixture requirements that become effective 1 Oct. 2011. »» Gained a seat at the table for the planning process for the next round of lighting requirements for the revision of California’s Title 20 appliance standards and Title 24 residential building standards. »» Monitored challenges, regulations and standards of related agencies (UL, CSA, DOE, EPA, NRCanada and the California Energy Commission) and provided vital testimony and direction on behalf of the lighting industry.
