Connecting Across the State

W

e’re pleased to bring a trusted online place, PBS LearningMedia, to teachers. Meanwhile, the firehose of information flooding the web is available to all users. How much of this Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii web free-flow is reliable? President and CEO More and more, students are learning the skills used in journalism to vet information for accuracy and fairness. Media literacy is an increasingly valued 21st-century skill. And despite having that web world at our fingertips, there’s still nothing like “being there” and seeing for oneself. So, in our tech-heavy digital and broadcast field, PBS Hawaii opens our doors to students and teachers for in-person sharing, and we go where they are, too. Last month, we hosted young students from a summer program at the College of Education program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Professor Christina Torres’ students from 12 public schools, five charter schools and six private schools toured the TV station and learned the elements of factual storytelling with a creative flair. (We look forward to holding many more gatherings next year in our new building, under construction.) Our HIKI NŌ team heads across the state for teacher/student workshops in digital media and quality storytelling, in collaboration with some of Hawaii’s top digital media teachers. Last month, at Kauai’s Chiefess Kamakahelei School in Lihue, HIKI

NŌ Assembly Editor Nikki Miyamoto and I coached students on video “voice-overs” or narration. Beginners (and I was there once) tend to adopt a robotic or singsong delivery in an effort to sound neutral and objective, but real people speaking of new developments don’t speak that way. Would you like to see our HIKI NŌ students’ completed work on the big screen? We invite you to join us in celebrating students’ media literacy and other 21st-century skills at these free screenings of outstanding hyperlocal stories:

n a rainy Friday night, a cul-de-sac in Kaneohe was filled with music and fellowship that harkened back to a simpler time. People arrived wearing smiles and carrying pots of pastele stew and chicken adobo and platters of chicken katsu, poke and haupia. They gathered in a garage with a tarp that extended into the driveway. The host, a broad man with an even broader smile, welcomed each person with a warm hug, accompanied by his laugh…the laugh that could only come from Ledward Kaapana. On most Friday nights, Ledward Kaapana, the man who pianist and producer George Winston calls, “one of the great improvisers in slack key history,” sits down with his guitar and jams with whoever is in the neighborhood…slack key guitar player Peter Medeiros from next door, Maui musician Kevin Brown, on a layover between the mainland and Maui, or Blayne Asing, a young voice with an old musical soul. But this particular Friday night was different. This night was all about family. Two of Ledward’s sisters…Lehua Nash, who lives in Ohio, and Rhoda Kekona, who resides in Las Vegas, were visiting Ledward and their other sister, Lei Aken. The reason for the sisters’ visit was a solemn one...a celebration of life to honor Ledward’s late twin brother, Nedward. But on

Ledward Kaapana

this Friday night, before the family gathered on Hawaii Island, Ledward and his sisters sat down to play some music. Sharon Kaapana, Ledward’s wife, told PBS Hawaii, “You might want to be here for this.” And so on that rainy night, Ledward’s family and friends, the “Led Heads,” ate ono food, enjoyed each other’s company, and listened to the music that Ledward grew up with in Kalapana on Hawaii Island, along with music that he and his sisters play just for fun. Beginning with Led’s beautiful voice on “Nani,” ending with the raucous “Jus’ Press,” a Ledward Kaapana signature piece, with Lei, Lehua and Rhoda taking solos on “Kaneohe,” “Kalapana,” and “Holei” in between, Ledward and his sisters made everyone smile and forget about the rain. PBS Hawaii was privileged to be invited to capture Ledward, Lei, Lehua and Rhoda playing their music together. On Monday, August 31 at 7:30 pm, the first of two Na Mele featuring Ledward Kaapana and Family will premiere on PBS Hawaii. Fill your plate and have a seat at the table. And... could you pass the katsu, please? August 2015 | PBS Hawaii

PBS Hawaii to Receive Grant-In-Aid Funding for NEW HOME Construction

T

he Hawaii State Legislature and the Administration of Governor David Ige have authorized a $1 million Grant-In-Aid to PBS Hawaii for the construction of the public television system’s NEW HOME, The Clarence T.C. Ching Campus, on Nimitz Highway at the entrance to Sand Island. In addition, the Honolulu City Council, at the recommendation of PARTNER PROFILE the Grants-In-Aid Advisory Commission, has awarded PBS Hawaii a Hawaiian Airlines $150,000 grant to fund construction of the new facility. The capital improvement grants bring the total amount raised to nearly $26.5 million – over 85 percent of the campaign’s $30 million fundraising goal. The project with Allied Builders System as general contractor is on time and on budget. Construction is expected to be completed on the 21st-century multimedia facility in Spring 2016. Several prime naming opportunities are available for your gift of support, including the building’s main television studio and a secondfloor Learning Zone, which will serve as PBS Hawaii’s digital media innovation center. To contribute to the project, complete the form at the bottom of the opposite page. For more information on NEW HOME updates, naming opportunities, or to donate, visit PBSHawaii.org/newhome or contact Ben Nishimoto, VP of Advancement, at 808-973-0292. Aerial Photography Hawaii
