Programming for Preschoolers & Their Parents | Winter 2016

FIT KIDS, HEALTHY KIDS Babies, toddlers and preschool children love to play, move and explore! Physical activity is important for a young child’s healthy growth and development. Through active and vigorous play, children are: building strong and healthy bodies; improving their sense of co-ordination and movement; developing confidence and self-esteem; releasing their tension and stress; developing early numeracy skills; exploring their

environments; creating positive memories; and having fun! When kids make active play a part of their daily routine, they are much more likely to remain physically active as they grow older. As parents, we want to encourage our little ones to develop a sense of physical literacy, which is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.

Through fundamental movement skills like running, galloping, skipping, jumping, hopping, leaping, kicking, striking, catching, throwing and tracking, kids can get their hearts pumping, get their bodies moving and become physically literate! These basic skills help kids build their self-esteem and develop confidence to participate and succeed in a variety of interesting games and sporting activities, and also enjoy creative free play.

Programming for Preschoolers & Their Parents | Winter 2016 Did you know that each day children should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity to increase their heart rate? One of the most effective ways to encourage children to be active is by modelling this behaviour ourselves. When children see their parents and/or those special adults in their lives walking, dancing, playing sports and being energetic, they are more likely to join in the fun and develop positive emotions and attitudes towards physical activity. • Spend time teaching your child favourite games from your childhood like hide-and-go seek, grounders, hot potato, capture the flag, monkey-in-the-middle, skipping, tag and fruit basket. • Turn up the music and dance together. Adding scarves, ribbons and balloons can add extra enjoyment to any family dance party! • Encourage your kids to invent new games using their imaginations. • Provide children with active toys like balls, hoops, bean bags, pool noodles and more. The wonderful thing about active play is that it can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere, inside or outside, alone or in a group. This winter, spend quality time walking through the snow, climbing up hills, sliding on the ice, throwing snowballs, building igloos, skating and tobogganing at the park. The cool fresh air and physical activity will energize both you and your child, and give them an appreciation for an active lifestyle!
