Lee County and the Minnesota Twins unveiled this summer a 56,923 square-foot residential Player Development Academy. The facility will serve the Minnesota Twins year round and is part of $48.5 million in upgrades to the complex -- $42.5 million contributed from Lee County and the remaining $6 million from the Twins – that will be completed in full by February 2015. “The Twins new Player Development Academy is truly state-of-the-art and will help us create a strong competitive advantage in developing players throughout our Minor and Major League system,” said Bill Smith, Twins Assistant to the President & General Manager. “We are truly thankful for the tremendous partnership that we have developed with Lee County over the past 25 years, and we look forward to continuing our relationship here in Southwest Florida for years to come.” The three-level Player Development Academy features a first floor common space, full-service dining, meeting rooms, from 10 seat spaces to the 220 capacity Champions Hall, classrooms and a game room for players. The facility also includes two floors of residential space to be used by players and staff with 58 total rooms, 54 of which are double occupancy and four are single rooms. The new residential space will provide a more efficient, year-round, multidiscipline training center for players and staff. In addition to the new Player Development Academy, construction on a new practice field is on schedule for completion in August. “We are excited the Twins are expanding their facility. We hope it’s as exciting for the players who will be staying at the new academy as the improvements for the fans at Hammond Stadium are,” said Lee County Commission Chairman Larry Kiker. The Player Development Academy is only the third of its kind in Major League Baseball to provide on-site housing for young professional players, along with communal living spaces to promote education, nutrition, team building and premier training resources. The first phase of the renovations at Lee County Sports Complex were unveiled in February 2014 and included renovations to the Minor League clubhouse and administrative areas, an agility field, an expanded seating capacity, from 8,000 to 9,300 seats, a new parking lot and the completion of a 360 degree boardwalk and concourse. The second phase of renovations, scheduled for completion in February 2015, will include upgraded and expanded concourses, improved concessions, renovations to the rest rooms, premium seating improvements, the

expansion of the clubhouse, a new retail store, new spaces for group seating and renovations to the administrative offices and the media facilities. All of these upgrades will benefit the Twins and their minor league affiliate Fort Myers Miracle. “The Player Development Academy is an important addition to Lee County Sports Complex for the Twins. While the fan experience and additional upgrades to Hammond Stadium are critical, it was a priority for the team from day one to provide the best resources available to aid in player development,” said Bruce Miller, Principal and Project Manager at Populous. “The Academy accomplishes this and is truly unique – there are very few other MLB teams that have a residential component at their Spring Training complexes, and even fewer who have this much square footage, communal space and amenities. I’m confident the Academy will be a differentiating factor for the Twins.”

The Player Development Academy and renovations at Lee County Sports Complex are designed by Populous, a global sport architecture firm, and construction is being managed by Manhattan Twins Joint Venture, a partnership between Manhattan Construction Company, Chris-Tel Construction and Casey Construction. “It was an honor to build a first-of-its-kind Player Development Academy for and with our community,” said Peter Hayden, Manhattan Twins Joint Venture project director. “At the of peak construction, we had more than 200 construction workers on site daily. We contracted 80 percent of phase one with local Lee and Collier County businesses and are on track to contract 92 percent of phase two to local businesses.” To learn more about Lee County Sports Complex and Hammond Stadium, visit Lee County Parks & Recreation’s website at www.leeparks.org.

From the Deputy Director

What’s new? NEW PARK NAME

Hancock Community Park has been renamed to Kurt Donaldson Community Park to recognize Donaldson’s 30 years of service to youth sports in North Fort Myers. Donaldson is a 30-year resident of Lee County and has served his communities as a baseball and football coach for more than 40 years, with 30 of those years with the Hancock American Little League and 26 with the North Fort Myers Pop Warner League. He is also a tenured professor of chemistry at Edison State College, which as of July 1 became Florida SouthWestern State College. The 17-acre park has four baseball fields and one outside basketball court as well as five tennis courts. Playground and picnic areas with two family pavilions are among the other amenities.

FITNESS PATH OPENS AT LAKES PARK

By Dana Kasler It’s been a notable season for Lee County Parks & Recreation this year. We have seen record numbers of visitors to the parks, athletic facilities and beaches. The Visitor & Convention Bureau estimates more than 1.4 million visitors came to Lee County during the winterspring season. Parks & Recreation plays a significant role in attracting Lee County’s visitors. Our entire team — from the ball field maintenance crews to the recreation center managers — assists with sporting events that choose to make Lee County their event sites. Some may think that after spring training we close down the fields, but the opposite occurs. We use almost every field, gymnasium, tennis court and pickleball court we can find to run these events. In fact, there are only four days from June to August that we are not hosting a sports event. These events allow us to provide the highest-quality facilities for our residents and visitors. We also have celebrated the renovations of the Lee County Sports Complex, Lehigh Acres Trailhead Park and the North Fort Myers Recreation Center over the past year and look forward to the development of new facilities in the coming year. Although sporting events may be the headlinegrabbers, please know that Dave and I recognize the importance of our community parks, our preserves, our beach destinations and, really, the array of sites we offer. Each corner of the county is important and offers quality of life attributes to those who use our locations. We know each of you works hard daily to offer top-drawer customer service and keep our sites pristine. For that, we are grateful — and we know it does not go unnoticed by others within our County organization. We will continue to work for you, and I embrace serving the residents and visitors of Lee County. I welcome your comments or ideas. Please give me feedback about what you love or what you want to see more of in your parks. Email [email protected] or learn more about us by visiting www.LeeParks.org.

Sincerely,

Late June marked the opening of the first three stations of the new state of the art total body outdoor fitness system at Lakes Regional Park. The Energi Prime equipment uses a revolutionary new technology that lets participants access free instructional videos directly on their smart phone. The program, designed for those 13 years and older, starts beginners out slowly and builds to a robust workout for all of the body’s five anatomical systems. The first three stations target static and dynamic stretching, pulling, back, angle bar, hurdle exercises, power and agility step exercises. These were funded by donations from The Ned & Claiborne Foulds Foundation and the Lakes Park Enrichment Foundation. Ultimately five stations will be installed, offering a total of 120 exercises that use nearly all of the body’s 600 muscles.

CITY OF PALMS NEW HOME FOR FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN BUCCANEERS

Lee County and Florida SouthWestern State College, formerly Edison State College, partner for the use of City of Palms Park for the school’s baseball and softball teams. The college and the county approved and signed a contract for a long-term use agreement for Florida SouthWestern to call City of Palms its home. The college’s baseball and softball teams will begin their season in autumn 2015 with fall ball, and the regular season will launch spring 2016.

NEW PLAYGROUNDS

Several new playgrounds have been installed. Three Oaks Community Park, Charleston Park and Buckingham Community Park all received playground upgrades. The Parks & Recreation Playground Committee chose playgrounds that would encourage children to be physically active and in keeping with the importance of parks in promoting health and quality of life. The designs keep kids moving, using their whole body to climb, run, slide, jump and more. The designs limit the number of prescribed entry and exit points, and make as many components as possible accessible from the ground to encourage kids to use their upper bodies and their imaginations. The components are also more accessible for those with physical challenges.

CONSERVATION 20/20 VOLUNTEERS COMPETE IN STATE ENVIRONTHON

The Cape Coral High School Environmental Club competed in the state Envirothon held in Lamont May 2014. These students and their leader, teacher Liz Kominar, regularly volunteer at several of the Conservation 20/20 preserves helping to GPS gopher tortoise burrows, remove exotics and pick up trash. This team participated in the regional Envirothon held at Lee County’s Caloosahatchee Regional Park in December 2013. By placing in the final three the team proceeded to the State level Envirothon where they won first place in the Soils section. Conservation 20/20 staff member Laura Greeno is a member of the planning team for the regional Envirothon. She is responsible for preparing the study guide and test for the current issues section of the competition. For more information on the Envirothon visit: http://www.envirothon.org/.

Splash into fun at Lee County pools Learn to swim, relax, exercise or just have fun

Lee County Parks & Recreation offers swimming fun and learning at four year-round pools The following Lee County Parks & Recreation pools are open year-round: Lehigh Acres Community Pool, North Fort Myers Community Pool, Pine Island Community Pool and San Carlos Community Pool. Don’t think for a minute you can’t afford to have your family splash around. Daily admission for public swimming ranges from $2 to $3, and swimming lessons cost $50. Interested in signing up for lessons? Go online to www.leeparks.org or call (239) 533-7275. If the participant hasn’t already taken a swim class with the county, a skills assessment must be taken before the child can be registered online. Assessments are necessary for first-time participants and can be given at any of the pools open for the season. One thing for families to keep in mind when visiting a Lee County pool is to always watch your children around the water. While the lifeguards are more than prepared to protect the safety of all patrons, don’t assume that they are watching only your child. The guards’ responsibility is to watch the entire pool and all of the patrons in it. Everyone can help with safety to prevent a drowning. The sun is out, the weather is warm and a pool awaits you and your family. What are you waiting for? Grab the sunscreen, goggles and towels. Go today.

Pool lifts

Lee County Parks & Recreation is leading the way in access to our pools. Currently all four full-time pools (North Fort Myers, Pine Island, San Carlos and Lehigh) have access by way of pool lifts. However, due to liability issues, the patron must be able to transfer to and from these lift chairs without assistance from pool staff. If you are in need of assistance, the pool staff is more than happy to welcome a friend or family member free of charge.

Thunderstorm policy

Living in Southwest Florida during the summer and early fall, there is always the risk of an afternoon thunderstorm. Lee County Aquatics facilities are equipped with an early lightning alert system. When lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius, the alert system will activate the strobe light and the audible horn will emit a loud 15 second alarm. Once the alert system is activated, all activity must be stopped and everyone at the facility must seek safe shelter. The facility will remain closed until 30 minutes after the last strike of lightning in the area. The facility must be completely cleared of all patrons. If a closure due to a storm is anticipated, the lifeguards will give advance notice for those who need to make arrangements to get home. It is the policy that there will be no refunds for the closing of a facility due to inclement weather. If the facility is able to reopen after the storm passes, there will be no charge to re-enter the facility.

Little swimmers

Stop the spread of waterborne illness where it starts. Most waterborne diseases occur from improper containment of bodily fluids. For this reason, Lee County Parks & Recreation, along with the Florida Department of Health, require that children who are not potty trained wear the proper swim gear. This means children should wear a waterproof swim diaper or plastic underwear before entering the pool.

Cold weather policy

Pools will not open until an air temperature of 60 degrees, including wind chill, is reached. This policy has been implemented to reduce energy costs associated with the loss of heat from a pool that is not covered with a thermal blanket.

Slide rules and information

• Must be able to swim to use the slides. • One person on the slide at a time. • Must go down slide on back and feet first. • Wait to go down the slide until previous swimmer is at the ladder. • Goggles or lifejackets are not allowed for use on the slide.

Lap lane rules

With two lanes available, anyone can enjoy the fulfillment of swimming laps. Here are the lap lane rules: • Continuous laps only with a reasonable pace. • Circle swim if more than one person in a lane. • No elementary backstroke when more than one in a lane. • Limit three per lane. • Limit one hour per swimmer.

Circle swimming

Circle swimming is swimming in a counterclockwise pattern around the line on the pool’s bottom in the lane’s center. With the correct etiquette, a faster swimmer overtaking a slower swimmer in the lane signals to pass by tapping the lead swimmer’s foot.

Personal Flotation Devices

Lee County Parks & Recreation policy allows only U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation devices (PFD) in swimming pools. A limited amount of PFDs are available at the pools on a first-come, first-serve basis.

AQUATICS Lee County Parks & Recreation offers an Aquatics Program that has developed through years of experience in teaching progressive swimming and water safety programs. As more knowledge is gained in the area of aquatics, we continue to grow and strive to improve our programs. Please refer to our description of classes below to determine the appropriate level for you or your child. As always, any of our aquatic staff at any of our facilities will be more than happy to assess your needs and help to place your child in the correct level. Learn-to-

Swim Programs:

Infant/Toddler Designed for children 6 months to 3 years old. This course requires that an adult accompany the child in the water. Skills are taught through fun activities and positive reinforcement for accomplishments. Children who are not yet potty trained are required to wear training pants or swimsuits with tight fitting legs. Swim diapers only please. Regular diapers are not permitted. Program skills are completed in four 30-minute classes.

DOG FACILITIES

Fun with Fido: off-leash and on-leash options No matter where your four-legged friend lives, a dog park is nearby

Don’t keep your dog begging for a new experience or he may think you’re a heel! Parks & recreation offers a bevy of beautiful locations your dog will enjoy. Best of all they are free. Two types of facilities are available - dog parks and dogfriendly parks. Dog parks offer fenced off-leash areas and other amenities while dog-friendly parks only allow dogs on leash.

NEED TO KNOW

Total Dog Friendly Facilities: 11 Dog Parks: 6 - offering on and off leash areas Dog Friendly Parks: 5 - offering on leash areas only Fee: All dog friendly facilities are located within parks that

require no fee.

General Dog Park Rules: • Owners must clean up after their dogs. Bags and disposal stations are provided.

• Owners must have proof of license and immunization for

their dogs. • Owners are legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries or loss caused by their dogs. • Dogs that are aggressive are not allowed in the park. • Dogs in heat or puppies under 4 months old are prohibited. • Park patrolled by Animal Services to assure compliance. • To report bites and/or violations please call Lee County Animal Services at (239) 533-7387. • Emergencies call 911.

Barkingham - dog park - Barkingham is a designated

section of the Buckingham Community Park and consists of two main features: The fenced off-leash open run area is approximately 1.5 acres and has separate area for puppies, shy or small dogs and a designated on-leash area including a walk around the mitigation lake and primitive back trails through pine and palmetto habitats. Dog Beach - dog park - Lee County has established one off-leash beach area that can be used for dogs. It is located just south of Lovers Key State Park and just north of New Pass Bridge Bonita Beach Causeway in Bonita Springs. Amenities include doggie water/shower station. K-9 corral - dog park - Area dog-lovers can bring their canine friends to K-9 corral located in Estero Community Park to recreate, exercise and socialize with other dogs. Small and timid dogs have a designated area while larger dogs have a separate area for themselves. This two-acre canine wonderland is surrounded by large trees that offer much shade for you and your pup. A dog wash area was added to freshen up your dog before you head home. Pooch Park - dog park - Judd Park in North Fort Myers is a gated and fenced off-leash area that has potable water for dogs and owners and several signs indicating “Large” and “Small” dog areas. The entire system is irrigated in order to maintain the turf and to regularly clean the facility. Woof-A-Hatchee - dog park - Woof-A-Hatchee is located in Wa-Ke Hatchee Community Park. This roomy park gives your dog space to run, play and make new friends. The park is an off-leash, fenced area complete with a separate space for puppies or shy dogs, restrooms, watering stations and dogwaste disposal stations.

www.LeeParks.org

John Yarbrough Linear Park - dog friendly - John Yarbrough Linear Park, a slender green space with a path, allows dogs on leashes. That means you can skate, run, walk or bicycle with your canine companion. Access the park at Daniels and Metro parkways. Or catch the greenway where it crosses Six Mile Cypress Parkway. Causeway Islands Park - dog friendly - Parks & Recreation manages the Causeway Islands, a roadside and shoreline park. No facilities are available on the first island, which offers more space for our furry friends. Second island has restrooms and water fountains but less pet friendly space. All dogs must remain on-leash and we ask all owners to help keep this shoreline park clean by picking up after your pet. Caloosahatchee Creeks and Prairie Pines Preserves - dog friendly - Portions of Caloosahatchee

Creeks Preserve and Prairie Pines Preserve are now dog friendly (on-leash only). For more information call (239) 707-0862 or (239) 707-2206. Paws 4 Duty – dog park - Our newest dog park is located in Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres. Paws 4 Duty offers two very shaded large off-lead areas; one for larger dogs and the other for the small, shy or puppy who needs a smaller space. Watering and shower stations help keep dogs and their owners hydrated, as well as available restrooms and waste removal stations. While dogs are not allowed in the general areas of Veterans Park, there is a designated dog walk to allow pets/owners to access Paws 4 Duty from the N.E. walk through park entrance.

Lehigh Acres Trailhead-dog friendly - This 11 acre park is the trail head of the future linear park along the Able Canal. Highlighted in the park is a paved ½ mile fitness loop that allows dogs on-lead only. Restrooms and dog waste removal stations available.

Want to learn how to play disc golf? How about doing Pilates? Or become an acrylics artist? Or try your hand at piano lessons, nature and outdoors programs, special needs activities and square dancing or clogging. It’s as easy as visiting one of the 12 centers that Lee County Parks & Recreation operates. Most of them offer programs, summer camps, special events and more. If you’re looking to get fit, engage the kids in healthy lifestyle activities or meet people in your community doing fun things, a county-managed rec center has something for you. For children in school, consider Club Rec. It’s offered at many sites during weekday afternoons and integrates a healthy lifestyle activity at least once a week. This helps to increase the percentage of children who are physically active and make healthy food choices. Where to start? First go online to www.LeeParks.org. You can search by facility or program.

Hours and Programs: Vary by facility. Please consult the following pages for more information.

Some recreation centers are quite large – Estero Community Park and Recreation center sits on 55 acres and has a 40,000 square-foot building, for example. Karl Drews Center is geared toward special needs programs. Lee County Parks & Recreation’s goal is to enable individuals to have meaningful, productive, and most importantly, fun recreational experiences. We believe that all individuals should be provided with leisure opportunities that allow for performance at the highest possible level. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to register for recreational programming. Other recreation centers are smaller and cater to their specific communities’ needs. Their atmospheres offer a true sense of place.

The school day is done: Time to join Club Sunshine. This program provides children with intellectual and/ or developmental disabilities an outlet to burn off the stress of the school day through organized games, activities, clubs, sports, crafts, and homework time. Participants will learn the benefits of recreation, healthy lifestyles, teamwork and caring for/understanding the environment/nature. Club Sunshine expects children to participate in planned activities as well as maintain a steady attendance. Children regularly missing more than two unapproved program days per week will be dropped from Club Sunshine in order to open a spot for another child. Parents are advised that the structure of Club Sunshine allows participants to sign them in but a parent will need to sign them out of the program. Club Sunshine is offered only on days when school is in session that are not a county holiday. Ages 6-22 yrs old (in school).

KJD Fun Day

Come spend your teacher in-service days with friends. Fun Days may include games, swimming, crafts, music, or field trips. Participants must bring a lunch, drinks, snacks, a change of clothing, sunscreen, bathing suit, towel for swimming, and all personal care items. Lee

County is concerned about the safety and liability of all participants and staff. We reserve the right to exclude individuals from the program who display aggressive or challenging behaviors that are inappropriate in the community or that could harm themselves or others. Staff will recommend alternate program options whenever possible.

KJD Social Club

Friday night is here; got plans? Come join us for some excitement. This program provides individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities the opportunity to hang out with their friends or even make new friends through organized games, activities, clubs, sports, crafts and a special outing on the third Friday of each month. Participants will learn the benefits of recreation, healthy lifestyles, teamwork and caring for one another. the safety and liability for all participants and staff. We reserve the right to exclude individuals from this program who display aggressive or challenging behaviors that are inappropriate in the community or could harm themselves or others.

Inclusion Philosophy:

• Lee County Parks & Recreation’s (LCPR) goal is to enable individuals to have meaningful, productive, and most importantly, fun recreational experiences. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to register for recreational programming. Along with registration, please make us aware of any accommodations that may be necessary to participate. The parks & recreation department is pleased to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.

History

Wa-Ke Hatchee Park takes its name from a combination of Native American names combining “cow” and “water.” A creek that cuts through the property was an important watering hole for Florida cowboys as the last source of fresh water for their cattle as they headed to Punta Rassa for shipment to Cuba. The recreation center is an innovative, cooperative venture between Lee County Parks and Recreation and the Lee County School Board. Most of the facility is an independent recreation center that is open to the public throughout the day. The gymnasium is dividable and shared with Lexington Middle School during the school day and during school special events. During the evenings and weekends, the recreation center uses the entire gymnasium.

(November-March) Walks are held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 - 11 a.m. Follow our naturalist on a Barrier Island Guided Walk as they lead you through the preserve and shoreline areas that make up Bowditch Point Park. If you’re fortunate you may even get an up close visit from one of our park Gopher Tortoises or see a young Osprey peaking out of their nest. Our guide will show you the importance of the barrier islands, their unique ecosystem and how they protect the mainland. Explore the beach front tropical hardwoods, coastal scrub and wetland plant communities. This program is free. Parking is $2 per hour or free with a valid Lee County Parks & Recreation Parking Sticker. Meet on the upper patio for this free walk.

Explore the Habitats

More than one mile of trails take you through various environmental communities. The property includes beach, tropical hardwoods, coastal scrub and wetland hardwood forest plant communities. These ecosystems provide for many types of wildlife. Regularly seen species include gopher tortoise, osprey and various types of shorebirds. From Lookout Point visitors are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding waters, with access to benches and an area with amphitheater-type seating. All this allows visitors to enjoy the tranquil beauty of nature.

Day Docks

The docks feature 10 slips for boats up to 28 feet in length and a kayak/canoe launch onto the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail. Docks are located on the bayside of the park just outside the marked channel in a slow speed zone. Boaters can use the free docks between dawn and dusk daily.

Guided Walk

Come along and explore the shoreline with us as we meander the San Carlos Bay ecosystem and learn more about the shoreline birds, shells, animals and plants native to this diverse preserve. Bring your camera/binoculars, drinking water, and wear closed-toed shoes that can get wet. The walk is free. Parking is $2 per hour or free with a valid Lee County Parks & Recreation parking pass.

History of Bunche Beach Preserve - San Carlos Bay

San Carlos Bay - Bunche Beach Preserve is named in honor of Dr. Ralph Johnson Bunche. Dr. Bunche (19041971) was the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950, which he won as head of the United Nations Palestine Commission for negotiating a peaceful cease fire between Israelis and Arab Nations. In 2001 an additional 703 acres of adjacent lands were purchased under the Conservation 20/20 Program and the area was renamed San Carlos Bay - Bunche Beach Preserve. This beach site remained relatively unchanged until Tropical Storm Gabrielle in September 2001. After the storm, invasive exotic Australian pines along the beach were removed. In 2006, land was donated and acquired for the preserve, bringing the present total to 719 acres.

Activity Center

Visit our “green” self-mulching restroom facilities operated by solar power and rainwater. Launch your paddlecraft, spend some time fishing at one of the two docks or just relax and enjoy the native plants and wildlife as you stroll the boardwalk and pathway to the beach. Roadway and parking lot fees run $2 per hour, or use the annual Lee County Parks & Recreation parking sticker.

Kayak Rental & Tours

Explore the Mangrove tunnels or paddle to nearby secluded Plover Beach. Kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard rentals and guided tours are available daily at the Bunche Beach Activities Center. Call Kayak Excursions at (239) 297-7011 or visit their website at www.Kayak-Excursions.com. Biological diversity San Carlos Bay - Bunche Beach Preserve is biologically diverse and indicative of the area before the introduction of exotic plant species. The communities include a sandy beach, mangrove forest and salt flats, and contain a wide variety of wildlife for viewing. San Carlos Bay - Bunche Beach Preserve also offers great photographic opportunities of the flora, fauna and fantastic sunsets.

Why aren’t pets allowed on Bunche Beach?

Bunche Beach does not allow companion animals of any kind to be on- or off-leash. Rangers will issue tickets for having a pet on the beach. Pets are not allowed on most public beaches due to safety issues - both from potential bites and from excrement. Also, dogs pose dangers to wildlife and scare nesting and wading birds from valuable habitat. Please use one of the designated dog parks or beaches.

Note: The City of Sanibel and the Town of Fort Myers Beach, except in county parks within town or city limits, allow leashed dogs on beaches. See Page 9 for more information.

Causeway Islands

19931 Sanibel Causeway Road, Sanibel, FL 33957 • Phone: (239) 765-6794 or (239) 533-7444

This facility, about 10 acres on SR/CR 867, consists of the roadsides of two spoil islands built and used to link the mainland to Sanibel Island. The Causeway bisects San Carlos Bay a short distance from the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, that allows bay and Gulf side access. As you are traveling from the mainland toward Sanibel Island you will pass through a Department of Transportation toll booth (toll is $6; no fee required for park use) then crossover a sky bridge and arrive at the first island, referred to as “Island A.” If you continue on, you will crossover another “flat” bridge and arrive at the second island referred to as “Island B.”

Both islands have been a popular destination since built and can be accessed from the water as well. Some of the activities enjoyed are fishing, wading/swimming (beware of submerged structures), picnicking, canoeing/kayaking, (no launching or retrieval of motorized vessels), wind surfing, kite boarding, shelling, sun bathing or just plain relaxing in the shade. Island “A” has parking only. Island “B” offers restrooms, drinking fountains (located on each side of the road) and a few picnic tables on the Gulf side. Grilling is permitted, so feel free to bring your own. No ground fires permitted. No alcoholic beverages allowed. Leashed pets welcomed but please remember to clean up after your pet.

Matanzas Pass Preserve is among the most interesting places in our area. Estero Island has undergone major changes since the 1940s. Urban development, hotels, condominiums and economic development have resulted in the alteration of the natural landscape. It is one of the few natural habitats left on the island, being a home for diverse fauna and flora.

Mangrove Walk

The preserve is located parallel to Estero Boulevard on the bay side between Bay Oaks and the Red Coconut Resort. The main entrance is located at the Historic Cottage beside the Beach School on Bay Road. The preserve has 60 acres and 1.25 miles of trails and several stops where you can enjoy and admire this natural treasure.

Learn how indigenous plants can be used for such things as food, shelter, medicine and clothing. Also learn the historical importance of some of Florida’s plants to humans. This program is offered on the 4th Wednesday of each month. This is a free program and parking is free, but space is limited so come early. Join our naturalist on our Mangrove Walk, a leisurely, educational guided walk through Matanzas Pass Preserve and enjoy our newly redesigned accessible boardwalks. Learn about the diverse plant community including a maritime oak hammock, transitional wetlands and a mangrove forrest. Walks are held each Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. and last about 90 minutes. This is a free walk and parking is free, but space is limited so come early.

Group Tours & Guided Walks

Schedule a free group tour and discover the coastal communities by exploring the beach parks and preserves with a volunteer interpretive guide. Learn about the wetlands, native plants and the importance of barrier islands. Call (239) 533-7444 to schedule a group tour.

Children’s Nature Program

The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve will be offering group programs for children. Learning adventures are being designed for school age children to discover and connect with the preserve. For more information on the educational programs, call (239) 851-7166.

Peace Poles

Lee County Parks and Recreation is fortunate to have several Peace Poles for the public to enjoy. The origin of the Peace Pole, as we know it today, derives from the Peace Pole Project, which was founded in Japan in 1955 by Masahisa Goi. The goal was to spread the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in response to the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since then Peace Poles have been planted in 180 countries. Locally you may visit them at Lakes Park, Manatee Park and Matanzas Pass Preserve. Each of the locations has its own beauty to enjoy and we like to think of them as “Magic Spots.” These are places where we can clear our minds (to achieve inner peace) and pay attention to what is happening all around us. For more locations of Peace Poles go to www.waymarking.com and search for Peace Poles in your location.

Manatee-All About Manatees

Why do manatees come to Manatee Park?

Since opening in 1996, Lee County’s Manatee Park has become an outdoor classroom. Abundant species of flora and fauna are visible year round. As you leisurely walk the pathways and boardwalks, flowers and butterflies surround you with color and fragrance. While small in size, Lee County’s 17-acre Manatee Park provides environmental education and programs for more than 150,000 visitors annually.

Canoe/kayak Rentals and Guided Trips

Do you know the Florida manatee is an endangered species and a native marine mammal? Join us for a program about the biological characteristics and habitat of the Florida manatee. All ages will enjoy discovering where manatees live, what they eat and the challenges they face in the shallow coastal waters of Florida. This program is ongoing during the winter months when staff are available.

During the winter season, volunteer naturalists are stationed along the walkways to offer information and answer questions about manatees, butterflies or plants. Free guided walks and programs are offered regularly. Educational materials are available in the Visitor Center. The gift shop offers manatee and butterfly books and gifts, and kayak rentals.

During the winter months, when the water temperature of the Gulf of Mexico and rivers drops below 68 degrees, the endangered Florida manatee seeks refuge from the cold waters by swimming into the Florida Power & Light warmwater discharge canal. This manatee sanctuary provides a winter haven for these warm-blooded native mammals that live, feed and raise their young year-round in the fresh, brackish or saltwater coastal areas of Florida. A variety of recreational kayak/canoe programs and rentals are available from Manatee Park. Please call (239) 4814600 for more information.

Group Interpretive Programs Year Round

Programs offered but not limited to may include manatee, butterfly and kayaking. To reserve a date and space for your group’s staff-led tour of the park or any of our programs call (239) 690-5030. Group Program fees; $1 per person. Please request 2 weeks in advance.

Five Conservation 20/20 sites have been added to the park since its initial purchase in 1994. HCMP consists of 862 acres and is one of the largest regional parks in Lee County. The Tourist Development Council of Lee County assisted in the funding of the waterfront facilities and Florida Communities Trust provided funding toward the initial purchase. With five miles of marked trails, HCMP is primarily designed for hiking and wildlife observation. Bicycles and pets are not allowed on the trails. This park is dedicated to the preservation of native plants and animals and is co-managed by Lee County and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Natural Features

Hickey’s Creek is one of the many natural attractions of the park. The creek flows through the park in a southeast to northwest direction for about 6,000 feet and flows into the Caloosahatchee River. Wildlife associated with the park include gopher tortoise, American alligator, river otter, Florida panther, Florida scrub jay, eastern indigo snake and a variety of songbirds and wading birds. The park encompasses a variety of natural communities including pine flatwoods with scrub components, freshwater marshes, cypress swamps, hardwood hammocks and oak-palm forests.

Land Stewardship

To mimic Florida’s natural fire pattern and enhance habitat, FWC and HCMP staff conduct prescribed burns as conditions allow. The park may be closed to the public during prescribed burns. As you hike, you may encounter recently burned areas along the trails. In preparation for burning and to encourage species diversity we also roller chop and mow palmetto areas. We encourage you to visit the park often to view the results of our land stewardship activities.

HCMP Guided Walk

Join park staff on a stroll through natural plant communities. See firsthand the plants and animals that make southwest Florida so unique. Participants should be able to walk approximately one and a half miles. This trail is only stroller and handicap accessible for about a quarter of a mile. Dress appropriately and bring a water bottle. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program is free with paid parking. Registration is not required. Limit of 25 participants. Groups of 5 or more please call ahead. For more information, call Kelly at (239)822-5212.

What’s new? Continued from page 2 PERFECT VISION: CONSERVATION 20/20 A 1994 land use study found that only 10 percent of Lee County was set aside for conservation. By comparison, nearly 28 percent of the State of Florida is owned and managed as conservation lands, and other south Florida counties have from 40 percent to 85 percent set aside for conservation. In 1995, a group of concerned citizens took it upon themselves to take this cause to the local government and began lobbying for a county-based land acquisition program to protect these natural areas. The group of citizens lobbying for this cause called themselves “Conservation 20/20” to signify their vision of a future Lee County with large undeveloped areas of natural habitats. In 1996, the vote for the increase of property taxes to pay for the conservation of lands successfully passed. The Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) created a citizen advisory committee and each commissioner appointed three members with responsibility to oversee the selection and purchase of properties and their management. The committee was named the Conservation Lands Acquisition and Stewardship Advisory Committee (CLASAC).

trail, snap photos of wildflowers and wildlife and get away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life. The parks and preserves are always changing. More lands are constantly being considered for preservation, and additional amenities and infrastructure are always being planned and constructed. In fact Galt Preserve and Telegraph Creek are undergoing expansions which will be completed in the near future. The expansive and diverse acquisitions of Conservation 20/20 are guaranteed to appeal to nature lovers of all sorts. From the sandy beaches of San Carlos Bay-Bunche Beach, to the lush mangrove forests of J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, all the way out to the rugged plains of the Alva Scrub Lands, there is truly something for everyone. To find out more information on all Conservation 20/20 preserves and upcoming schedule for guided nature walks, visit www.conservation2020.org. (written by Matt Bursztyn, Lee County Parks & Recreation Volunteer)

CLASAC and the C20/20 Program have four main objectives: • Protect and preserve natural wildlife habitat • Protect and preserve water quality and supply • Protect developed lands from flooding • Provide resource-based recreation Today, Lee County has 24,000 acres across 44 preserves in the Conservation 20/20 program, including a parcel that was recently added called the Alva Scrub Preserve. Anyone can explore the county’s beautiful collection of woods, beaches, sloughs and prairies. Take a stroll on a walking

4H Information How old do I need to be?

What are the 4 H’s?

All adults are welcome to be potential leaders. All you need to start a club is a responsible adult leader and five youth.

It is the 4-H symbol to express the spirit and ideals of 4-H. Green is for growth and youth. White is for purity, sincerity and honesty. The H’s stand for:

Here’s the breakdown: Age 5- 7 Cloverbuds Age 8-10 Juniors Age 11-13 Intermediates Age 14-18 Seniors There are a few limits for things like handling large animals and some competitive events, but nothing can stop you from having a lot of fun.

How do I join 4-H? Florida 4-H is the youth development program of the

University of Florida Extension. The Lee County 4-H Extension provides development opportunities for 4-H youth members through traditional 4-H clubs, school enrichment and special interest programs.

Who is 4-H for? 4-H is for everyone. Well, OK, we can get a little more specific. 4-H accepts boys and girls from widely diverse groups of social, economic and ethnic backgrounds. There are tons of things to do and “projects” to choose from. The choices are yours to make. We even need adult volunteers willing to start and lead or mentor some of our groups. There’s a role for practically everyone to play in 4-H.

It’s really quite easy. Your first step should be to talk to an adult about it. Adult volunteers are essential to the mix and are trained to provide leadership and guide 4-H members in community and other activities. 4-H is really a family affair. We need everyone to be involved because there’s a lot to do and lots of places to go. You all need to know this right away because we don’t want that to be a surprise. You’re going to need their help and they need to be willing to help you. Next, contact the 4-H program at the local Extension office. You can contact us here. We will need to get some basic information from you. After that, we may need to mail you some more stuff including a list of people to call. Ask the person you call if you can attend one of their meetings. From there it’s up to you to decide what to do.

Head = appreciating others, understanding our

community, gaining knowledge.

Heart = finding friendships, discovering yourself, cooperating with others. Hands = becoming involved, participating in projects, activities and events. Health = developing habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle. What does 4-H do? 4-H offers young people ages 5-18 an opportunity to share learn and grow through a variety of enjoyable projects and events that help build self-confidence and other critical life skills. The goal of the Lee County 4-H Program is to build strong productive citizens through the development of the whole person by providing opportunities for enjoyable, hands-on educational programs designed to develop leadership, citizenship and teamwork skills. 4-H reaches hundreds of youth in Lee County each year. Join us! Are you into it? Please contact Cathy Suggs at (239) 850-4176 for more information about 4-H in Lee County

LEE 4-H PROMOTION REACHES MORE THAN 200,000 PEOPLE The Lee County 4-H Foundation sponsored a 4-H float that was seen by more than 200,000 residents as it appeared in the Edison Children’s parade, Edison Festival of Lights Parade, Swamp Cabbage Parade, and the Lehigh Spring Festival Parade.

As a result of the 4-H promotion float, adult volunteers are interested in starting two new 4-H Clubs and 30 new kids expressed interest in joining 4-H in fall 2014. Several strong community partnerships also were formed. For example, the Southwest Florida Fair followed the float in a trolley with a sign stating that they support 4-H.

Twenty children from clubs throughout the county were selected to ride the 4-H float. Each youth dressed up to represent their 4-H project. Projects covered an array of topics including public speaking, sports fishing, leadership, community service, animal science, natural resources and sewing.

Everglades Farm equipment has agreed to donate tractors for future floats, and the Lee County Parks & Recreation has expressed an interest in being part of the caravan for 2015 supporting 4-H Youth Development Initiatives.

For more information on the UF/IFAS Lee County 4-H Youth Development Program, contact Agent Cathy Suggs at 239-850-4175, or email [email protected]

The 4-H motto and pledge were visible for all to see. Children and adults worked together for three weekends creating the float in a true youth/adult partnership. Adult volunteers walked beside the float as youth rode, passing out more than 1,500 brochures promoting Lee County 4-H and the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
