Troop and Service Unit Travel Through travel, girls gain enormous benefits. They develop self-confidence and learn leadership skills by planning, earning money, and venturing to other countries or parts of the United States. They make lifelong friends—not only with the girls they travel with but new girls they meet along the way. They gain cultural insight, an appreciation for differences and similarities, and a broadened perspective. When planning to travel as a troop make use of the GSWNY Adult Guide to Travel found on our website (gswny.org) and enter “Troop Travel Adult Guide” in the search field. Need support for troop or service unit travel? Contact the Girl Experience Team at [email protected]

Girl Scouts Fight Hunger April 1 - May 1, 2017 Patch Programs

Help fight hunger in our communities while earning the Girl Scouts of Western New York’s Girl Scouts Fight Hunger patch. Be part of this council-wide effort to combat hunger through knowledge, awareness, and a food drive to support the Food Bank of Western New York and Foodlink. Step 1: Discover and connect with your troop, your family, or on your own. Participate in an activity to discover and connect to the issue. Below are some example activities. • Volunteer at a local pantry/soup kitchen. • Research hunger facts such as the number of people in our world, state, and community who are at risk of hunger. • Do a presentation, write and perform a skit, make a poster, or play a game that teaches you and others about hunger. • Learn what Food Security means. Find out what a Food Desert is, if there is one near where you live, and discuss what could be done to make the situation better. • Make colorful placemats for a local shelter, soup kitchen, or food pantry. • Tour a local supermarket to learn about the costs and nutritional values of different foods. • As a troop or individual, keep track of your snacks and meals for several days. Reflect and discuss what you ate, when you ate, who you ate with, and how you would have felt if you did not have enough food and were hungry. • Sign up for a nutrition workshop through the Food Bank of WNY or Foodlink. • For more ideas and resources, contact Girl Scouts of Western New York at [email protected]. • Tour and volunteer at Foodlink or Food Bank of Western New York.

Step 2: Take Action throughout the month of April, collect donations to support the Food Bank of Western New York and Foodlink. Drop off donations to any Girl Scouts of Western New York Service Center.

Once you’ve completed all of the required steps, order your patch at: http://gswny.wufoo.com/forms/2017-girl-scouts-fight-hunger/
