ELFA and the Foundation Community Service Projects Habitat for Humanity of Coachella Valley Sunday, October 23 8:00 am – 1:00 pm

At Habitat for Humanity of the Coachella Valley, HOPE is not a dream but a way of making dreams become reality. At this very moment, Habitat volunteers, supporters and partner families are building, renovating and repairing houses. Their work strengthens families and cultivates better communities, healthier children and more successful students. Since the inception of the affiliate in Coachella Valley, Habitat for Humanity has built many houses for local area needy families in Palm Desert, Cathedral City, Coachella and Desert Hot Springs. They are working on expanding to build in Indio, La Quinta and Palm Springs. Attendees will work on some aspect of home improvement or construction, including painting, caulking, landscaping, minor repairs and exterior clean-up. All work will be supervised by experienced volunteers. This project can only accommodate 50 people.

Jim McGrane Charity Bicycle Ride Sunday, October 23 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Big Wheel Tours will be organizing a 20 and 40 mile time trial style bike ride in the California Desert. Both routes will be an out and back course on a single road with rolling terrain and the likelihood of breezy weather. The route will take cyclists through the Colorado portion of the Sonoran Desert and will provide sweeping vistas of the Coachella Valley and the two tallest peaks in Southern California, Mt. San Jacinto and Mt. San Gorgonio. Big Wheel staff will roam the course and will also be stationed at key points along the route to provide traffic control. Big Wheel will provide bikes, helmets, waters, snacks and course marshalling. Note: There is a separate fee for rental of bikes and helmets.

Build-a-Bike Sunday, October 23 2:00 – 4:00 pm

This project will be conducted on the grounds of the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort. ELFA volunteers will work in groups to build and customize several bicycles for local children. Each child will receive a brand-new bicycle built by each group and a brand-new bike helmet. For most of the children involved, ages 8-12, this will be their first bicycle! Each bicycle is inspected before a child takes it home. Each team will build one or two bicycles.

9:00 am – 3:00 pm

(Bus leaves at 10:15)

(Bus leaves at 9:15)

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway—the world’s largest rotating tram car—travels over two-and-a-half miles along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon, transporting riders to the pristine wilderness of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park. During your approximately 10-minute journey, tram cars rotate slowly, offering picturesque and spectacular vistas of the valley floor below. Once you reach the Mountain Station—elevation 8,516 feet— enjoy two restaurants, observation decks, a natural history museum, two documentary theaters, a gift shop and over 50 miles of hiking trails.

This educational eco-tour focuses on the history and legends of the late 19th century mining era and the settlers who came to seek their fortune in this desert wilderness.

Once atop the peak of Mt. San Jacinto, guests will find themselves in a 13,000-acre Wilderness State Park forest surrounded by a magnificent pine forest and views stretching miles to the Salton Sea. Attendees will have the option to walk an energetic one-mile mountain trail with a guide or explore at their own leisure. This event includes a private luncheon in the Mountain Station. Tour not recommended for guests with a fear of heights or enclosed spaces.

Guests will wander, explore and take plenty of photos in the recreated Indian Village, while a knowledgeable guide will explain what life was really like for the early desert settlers. This tour also includes exploration of steep walled canyons that have been described as some of the most tortured landscapes on earth, a classic desert badlands caused by the San Andreas earthquake fault. The event will conclude with a private luncheon in a recreated Indian Village. A spouse or companion attending any portion of the convention or social function must be registered and pay the appropriate spouse/companion fee. If he or she is employed in leasing the full member attendee registration fee is due.
