Ellen K. Pikitch, Ph.D. Page 8 of 26 Conferences and Symposia. I currently serve as Chair of the Lenfest Forage Fish Task Force, and in that capacity convened four task force meetings over the two-year duration of the Task Force. From 2004 through 2008 I convened the annual meeting of the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation, attended by more than 100 participants from around the globe, in various locations including the Florida Keys, USA (2004), Nova Scotia, Canada (2005); Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (2006), Morro Bay California (2007), and Gulf of Papagayo, Costa Rica (2008). I have co-convened two other major international symposia (Fisheries Management: Global Trends, Seattle, WA 1994; International Pelagic Shark Symposium, Asilomar, CA, 2000), and two conferences of regional or national scope (Western Groundfish Symposium, WA, 1990, Resource Modeling Conference, 1985). I have served on numerous conference organizing committees and frequently give presentations at venues of regional, national and international scope. Public Outreach Activities. I have assumed a leadership role in broadening the reach of marine scientific information by integrating and transferring knowledge about problems facing fish to scientists, policy makers, and the general public. For example, I co-founded and served as lead scientist of the Caviar Emptor initiative (www.caviaremptor.org) an effort to promote recovery of sturgeon and increase consumer awareness of the problems facing sturgeon and other fish. This program led to the listing of the beluga sturgeon in 2004 under the US Endangered Species Act and a ban on U.S. imports of beluga sturgeon products in 2005. Following these events, the worldwide trade in sturgeon caviar of all species was halted in January 2006 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, and Romania declared a national 10-year moratorium on sturgeon fishing. The Caviar Emptor program has been recognized with the 2004 Silver Anvil Award by the Public Relations Society of America, and with the Wilmer Shields Rich Award by the Council on Foundations for excellence in public communication. I have appeared on TV numerous times (including segments on CNN, CNBC, NBC News, Discovery News, EXTRA, and Wild about Animals), given many radio interviews, and have been quoted in thousands of newspaper articles. My outreach activities have included Op-Ed’s, articles, and letters in newspapers, magazines, scientific journals, books, and technical reports (see examples in section on Publications below).
