We dedicate this book to Nelson Mandela (1918–2013), freedom fighter, statesman and first democratically elected President of South Africa (1994–1999). He was sentenced to life in prison in 1964 as an activist for the African National Congress (ANC). On his release in 1990 he became the leader of the ANC and engaged in talks on the introduction of majority rule with President Frederik Willem de Klerk, with whom he shared the Nobel Prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela is a global hero and champion. He lived the values we hold deeply for our vision of action research, including freedom of speech, equality and equity of all humankind: commitment to peaceful negotiations; civil rights and social justice; community engagement; poverty reduction through employment; and education and higher education opportunities for all.
