Fresh air in indoor swimming pool facilities

Reliability

FlexoPool utilizes fresh air to create a healthy indoor climate in indoor swimming pool facilities and this means happier guests. Dry outdoor air is used for dehumidifying the indoor swimming pool facility; therefore a maximal amount of the energy in the extract air can be recovered in a heat exchanger and heat pump and recycled back to the facility, which provides better heat recovery.

The ventilation unit is the heart and lungs of the indoor swimming pool, and, just like those inside our bodies, must never stop. FlexoPool has been developed for Scandinavian climatic conditions and is a simple system solution that provides maximal operational reliability. Every unit is supplied with function-tested control equipment of well-known brands that offer provision for connecting up to the building’s DHC monitoring system.

The right indoor climate

Low operating costs

In environments such as those inside indoor swimming pool facilities, the dehumidification system must be adequately sized and offer high operational reliability. During the cold months of the year, the indoor swimming pool facilities can be compared with a pressure cooker. If humidity is pressed out into the building structure, moisture damage will result. The dehumidification function must be dependable. The dehumidification and temperature control system is season-adaptable. Provision is available to boost the airflow in the summer when it is hot and humid outdoors.

In addition to the heat exchanger, the FlexoPool can be equipped with heat pump for maximal heat recovery. The heat recovery capacity is sized according to the specific needs of the ventilation system. FlexoPool is available in 8 standard sizes with airflows between 0.5 m³/s and 6 m³/s for a broad range of applications, for instance from small hotel pools to large adventure pool water parks. If your application requires larger sizes, contact IV Produkt.

Air handling with the focus on LCC

Main operating conditions Daytime operation in the winter, dehumidification needed

Indoor air is dehumidified and a variable amount of fresh air is mixed in depending on the degree of dehumidification required. The heat exchanger operates at full energy recovery capacity. The heat pump produces hot water whenever required. Min. fresh air intake.

Winter/summer transitional period, dehumidification needed

Indoor air is dehumidified and a variable amount of fresh air is mixed in depending on the degree of dehumidification required. The heat exchanger operates at 0-100% energy recovery capacity. The heat pump produces hot water whenever required. Min. fresh air intake.

Summer, dehumidification needed A full amount of fresh air is mixed into to indoor air depending on the degree of dehumidification required. The heat exchanger operates at 0-100% capacity as required. The heat pump produces hot water whenever required. 100 % fresh air intake.

Night-time operation, no dehumidification needed

100 % circulation at night when dehumidification is not required. The supply air is heated if necessary to compensate for the transmission loss in the indoor swimming pool facility. The heat pump is not in operation. The supply air fan is running and the extract air fan is shut down. If dehumidification is required, the unit switches back to the “Daytime winter with dehumidification load” operating mode.

Principal coupling of the heat pump

Air handling with the focus on LCC

Whenever there is a need to dehumidify the air, the heat pump produces 50 degree water for the swimming pool, radiators, reheating coils, etc., for instance. If the heat produced by the heat pump is not enough, the remaining heat needed can be supplied from an external heat source.

Design The EXG FlexoPool is assembled and supplied as a complete energy recovery unit and consists of coils in the supply and extract air paths, including pipework and speed-controlled pump.

• Static pressure in the liquid system is monitored via a control manometer with signal contact. A reduction or increase in pressure will stop the circulation pump and initiate an alarm. • Moisture is not recovered from the extract air. However, under low outdoor air temperature conditions, moisture is precipitated and energy is recovered. The condensate is collected in a drip tray equipped with a 32 o.d. drain connection (no water trap is required because the system is under pressure generated by an upstream fan). • The precipitation of moisture involves risk of ice forming on surfaces inside the extract air coil. Possible ice formation is counteracted by regulating the flow of liquid in the system via the speed-controlled circulation pump. • Inspection of coils and other equipment via lockable inspection doors. • The section is supplied on base beams.

FlexoPool

Control Equipment Control equipment with a type Siemens Desigo PX microprocessor automation station is available for controlling the FlexoPool air handling unit. The unit is complete, pre-programmed and functionally tested and has integrated control equipment with project-customised schedules, ready to be commissioned. The control equipment optimises the control of the humidity and temperature and is simple to monitor. All information is displayed in plain text in a handheld terminal.

Control Equipment

When the unit is operating in the Daytime – Recirculated air or Night-time – Recirculated air modes, the extract air fan is stopped. To ensure a safe start, the supply air fan is first started up with full recirculated air intermixture. After a preset time period, the outdoor/exhaust air damper opens and the extract air fan starts. The circulation pumps are demand-controlled and exercised. The circulation pump for heating operates continuously whenever the outdoor temperature is low. The damper actuator closes, de-energised, when the unit is shut down.

Daytime operation When the unit is operating during the day, the Daytime – Outdoor air operating mode has priority; the supply air and extract air fans are running. The amount of recirculated air mixed into the supply air is determined on the basis of the dehumidification load. The min. outdoor air volume is adjustable in the computer automation station.

Desigo PX is Siemen’s standard microprocessor user station for building automation and is ready for integration with other PX automation stations via BACnet/LON. Communication units can be offered for communication with other systems and web solutions.

Controls The air handling unit is operated by means of an ”0 - AUTO” switch on the control cubicle. The air handling unit is controlled via time scheduling in a computer automation station for continuous operation in the ”Daytime operation” or the ”Nighttime operation” mode. The controls are available with an external timer or a pushbutton for prolonged daytime operation.

If the operator sets the min. outdoor air volume to 0%, the unit can, if required, switch over to the Daytime – Recirculated air mode to prevent desiccation of the premises. When the humidity has risen above the preset value, the unit switches back to the Daytime – Outdoor air mode.

Night-time operation When the unit is operating at night, the Night-time – Recirculated air operating mode has priority. The supply air fan is running and the extract air fan is switched out. The outdoor air/exhaust air dampers are closed and the recirculation damper is open. If the humidity rises above the preset value, the unit switches over to the Night-time– Outdoor air mode for dehumidifying the premises. The volume of recirculated air mixed into the supply air is determined by the humidification load. The unit switches back to the Night-time – Recirculated air mode when the humidity drops.

In response to the dehumidification load, the FlexiPool unit is controlled to four different operating modes: Daytime – Outdoor air or Daytime – Recirculated air for daytime operation as well as Night-time – Recirculated air or Night-time – Outdoor air for night-time operation.

Flow control (option)

In response to a decrease in temperature measured by the temperature sensor in the extract air, the computer automation station increases the flow of liquid in the heat recovery circuit and then opens the control valve for heating in sequence to reach the preset setpoint. On rising temperature, the reverse sequence takes place. The setpoint can be altered to compensate for the outdoor air temperature.

On selecting speed-controlled fans, the controls can be supplemented with a feature for controlling the airflow generated by the supply air and extract air fans.Control of heat pump (option)

The supply air temperature can be limited to min. and max. settings.

Humidity control In response to a decrease in humidity measured by the moisture sensor in the extract air, the computer automation station opens the recirculated air damper and closes the outdoor air/exhaust air damper to reach the preset setpoint. On increasing humidity, the control is reversed. The setpoint can be altered to compensate for the outdoor temperature.

Internal stepping switches can be utilized for controlling the operation of the compressors in the heat pump in order to keep the heat transfer medium temperature at the setpoint preset in the computer automation station. The system does not permit the exhaust air and the heat transfer medium temperatures to drop below the preset settings. To prevent freezing, the compressors are controlled for less heat recovery. The heat pump operates only in the Daytime – Outdoor air mode or the Night-time – Outdoor air mode, when the extract air fan is switched in.

The humidity in the supply air can be limited to min. and max. settings.

Controls

Frost formation on heat exchanger surfaces Frost forming on the air heater is prevented by not permitting the exhaust air temperature to drop lower than the preset value. On falling temperature, the controls reduce the flow of liquid for a decrease in heat recovery.

Anti-frost monitor When the water temperature by the anti-frost monitor sensor is low, the controller opens the heating coil control valve to let in heating medium. If the water temperature continues to drop and there is danger of freezing, the unit is stopped and the outdoor air/ exhaust air damper closes. The heating coil is kept warm while the unit is stopped.

Protective functions Other safety equipment such as smoke/fire and supervision equipment or emergency stop can be connected to the control equipment for stopping the unit and/or initiating alarms.
