Special Prizes

In the name of UNESCO SALAM SHABAB Magic Carpet, Steel River Production and USIP, Iraq One of the most crucial problems of our times is the communication between different cultural groups. The new dimensions of war and conflicts in our contemporary world are accompanied by new prejudices. The prevention and the fight against prejudices are at the heart of UNESCO’s programme line “Intercultural Dialogue”. The ravishing Iraqi Production Salam Shabab is not only an exciting and entertaining format. More than that, it opens the space for personal experience and intercultural reflection. It opens up for change. The UNESCO-SPECIAL PRIZE 2012 therefore goes to Iraq Television for the courageous production Salam Shabab, a format that convincingly promotes a better understanding of others and even more of our own cultures. Congratulations!

In the name of UNICEF TASHI AND SAKTENG Bhutan Broadcasting Service, Bhutan Television is very important to children - it can open the world to them, help them learn through entertainment and give them a voice. In countries where there are few shows for young people, culturally-appropriate and quality programming can be an empowering tool. The UNICEF prize was created to celebrate those in the broadcast industry who are helping to raise awareness of children’s concerns and the basic human rights that all children deserve. This year’s recipient is a program that not only highlights the important children’s rights to education but also presents young people themselves trying to affect change for the youth around them. It is a program that addresses the complex issues that arise when traditional culture is faced with modern development and how it affects young people and their future.

Special Prizes

The Next Generation Prize THE YOUTH PARLIAMENT Casa de Producao Audiovisual, East Timor The Jury members for the Next Generation Prize agreed that the nominated programmes in this category were outstanding in terms of content and production values. We were unanimous in deciding to reward the Production Company which we feel will benefit most from the training and development opportunities offered by this Prize. The winners come from a new country, with very little provision as yet for bespoke children’s programming. We hope therefore that this Prize can make a difference not just to the winning Company, but, in the longer term, to the country’s children, who have little access to the riches we have all witnessed here at Prix Jeunesse 2012. So this year’s Next Generation Prize goes to Casa Producao Audiovisual from Timor Leste, for their programme “Youth Parliament”.

PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL 2012 Heart Prize 2BROTHERS KRO / RKK, Netherlands

Prize of the Children‘s Jury 7-11 Fiction ONCE UPON A TIME - THE CHALKBOY ABS-CBN Corporation, Philippines Each episode of this series deals with an important topic in a very imagninative way. A boy has an issue with getting along with his grandfather. The man is very strict, always criticizing his grandson for being a picky eater. In a nearby shed the boy meets a magic matchstick man, who tells him about his grandfather’s past. When the old man was his age he experienced war and learned that food was very scarce and therefore precious. The film is very sensitive, telling a serious topic in a child-oriented, gripping way. Not only does the boy learn about the past of his country, he also gets a better understanding of his grandfather’s behaviour. In the end he develops a close relationship with his granddad. Congratulations!

7-11 Non-Fiction CHECKPOINT Evangelical Broadcasting Company, Netherlands In this infotainment series teenagers are actively involved. They can gain new experiences firsthand. Is it possible to take your clothes off while riding on a water-slide? How can you survive in wilderness when you’re running out of water? How to climb a wall like “Spider Man”? Who is the better brain teaser: boys or girls? The topics are inventive, creative and realised in a funny way. In each episode children and teens learn new things. The presenter always behaves at eye level with the young participants.
