ANC Backgrounder Relying on an experienced and dedicated team of employees, supported by more than 100 volunteers, the Association offers the following programs and services:

What is Private Sponsorship? ¤  Private Sponsorship is the resettlement of refugee(s) to Canada, in which the financial costs of sponsorship and settlement support is provided by private groups or organizations

Who Can Sponsor? ¤  Sponsorship Agreement Holders ¤  An incorporated organization with a signed sponsorship agreement with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) (e.g. the ANC)

¤  There are other ways to sponsor independently of the ANC: ¤  Community Sponsors ¤  Any organization, association or corporation ¤  Groups of Five ¤  A group of five Canadians citizens or permanent residents

The ANC and Co-Sponsorship ¤  The ANC was designated as a SAH in late 2014 ¤  The ANC can sponsor or work with a Co-Sponsor ¤  A Co-Sponsor is an individual or group who partners with the ANC to share responsibility for the sponsored refugee(s) ¤  While the ANC holds the sponsorship agreement, CoSponsors take the lead role in providing financial and day-today support

What are the Responsibilities of a Co-Sponsor? Co-Sponsors commit to 6 or 12 months of financial support, depending on the sponsorship option chosen. In addition, they are also responsible for meeting an array of other needs of the sponsored refugee(s). These include, but are not limited to: ¤  ¤  ¤  ¤  ¤  ¤  ¤  ¤  ¤ 

Facilitating the initial airport reception Providing housing, food, clothing, furniture and other household goods Providing orientations (e.g., banking, shopping, etc.) Providing assistance with transportation and public transportation (e.g., to various appointments, to the grocery store, etc.) Connecting them to essential programs (e.g., SIN, MCP, Child Tax Benefit) and resources (e.g., the ANC) Assistance with selecting a family physician, dentist, counsellor Facilitating access to childcare Enrolling children in school and adults in language training Facilitating social connections

What are the Responsibilities of the ANC? The ANC provides supports to Co-Sponsors to ensure the successful settlement and integration of sponsored refugees. Supports provided include, but are not limited to: Supports for Co-Sponsors ¤  Assistance with the private sponsorship application process ¤  Training Supports for Refugees ¤  Information, referral and orientation sessions ¤  Language assessment and training ¤  Employment services ¤  In-school settlement support for children and youth ¤  Volunteer supports ¤  Social, recreational, and educational supports

Identifying a Refugee for Sponsorship    Identified by a local family/individual for sponsorship Fully funded by private sponsors Eligible for MCP only

 Identified by Visa Office overseas (Blended Visa Office Referral) 6 months income support from federal government; 6 month income support from private sponsors Eligible for MCP and IFHP

Sponsorship period: 1 year     Sponsors provide all financial and settlement support

Thinking of Co-Sponsoring? ¤  Talk to the ANC ¤  Form a group of dedicated individuals who can commit to 12 months of support ¤  Make preparations for reception, housing, clothing furniture, childcare, etc. ¤  Ensure there are appropriate services in your area to address refugees’ needs (language, health care, mental health/counselling)

Are There Other Ways to Help? ¤  Donate to the ANC s Private Sponsorship of Refugees Fund ¤  All funds will be used to support local efforts to privately sponsor refugees ¤  Financial donations allow the ANC to sponsor refugees independently (e.g., family reunification) ¤  You can donate on our website at www.ancnl.ca or in person at our Main Office at 144 Military Road ¤  All monetary donations to the ANC s fund are 100% tax deductible ¤  You can also donate to a number of organizations to support their efforts in assisting refugees, including UNHCR, the Canadian Red Cross, World Vision, Oxfam, and War Child.

Are There Other Ways to Help? ¤  Spread the Word ¤  If you or anyone you know is interested in contributing in any way to this endeavor, please pass the word along. By simply notifying a colleague, family member, business, or friend, you can make an impact on the lives of refugees.

¤  Volunteer ¤  The ANC has numerous ways in which you can volunteer to support the settlement and integration of refugees in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Volunteer Opportunities (Metro) ¤  Newcomer Match Program: In this program, volunteers are paired with newcomers that they visit at home to provide one-on-one tutoring and support. ¤  Time commitment: 2 hours per week x 6 months

¤  Academic Tutor Program: In this program, volunteers are paired with newcomer children and youth that they visit at home to provide oneon-one tutoring and support with homework. ¤  Time commitment: 2 hours per week x 6 months

¤  ESL Conversation Circle Program: This program takes place every Monday from 1-2 PM at the ANC ESL Training Centre. Volunteers are paired with 1-2 students that they have conversations with using handouts/questions provided by the Volunteer Coordinator. ¤  Time commitment: No requirement. Volunteers receive weekly reminders and can come as often as they want.

Volunteer Opportunities (Metro) ¤  ESL Training Centre Volunteer: In this program, volunteers are placed in a lower-level ESL classroom to assist the teacher by helping students during class time and providing one-on-one support. ¤  Time commitment: 1.5 hours per week ¤  Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers must have previous teaching experience/education (i.e., B.Ed., TESL, TOEFL, overseas experience, retired teacher, etc.)

¤  Afterschool Program: In this program, volunteers assist newcomer children with homework, assignments, and group activities (e.g., arts and crafts). The program takes place twice a week at two schools from 2:30-4:30 PM. ¤  Time commitment: 2 hours per week

¤  Special Events: E-mail requests are often sent to volunteers who wish to participate in one-time or monthly activities. This includes Women’s/ Men’s/Youth Group, the annual Health Fair, etc.

How do I Become a Volunteer? There are three easy steps in becoming a volunteer with the ANC: ¤  Complete a Volunteer Application Form (including three references) ¤  Attend a Volunteer Orientation Session ¤  Obtain a Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check from the RNC
