Professional Profile I am a web designer and front-end developer currently seeking a new contract ideally in or around Sheffield. I am looking forward to a new and challenging project to work on either as an individual or as part of a team. My particular expertise is in HTML and CSS with jQuery, responsive web development and particularly front-end HTML/CSS solutions for older browsers (IE6 and above). I have my own limited company, equipment (Mac) and indemnity insurance - which should make hiring me within your organisation a much easier. If you are farther afield I can work remotely with a few days on-site for briefings and catch-ups.

Skillset My skillset is always developing over time as I become exposed to new techniques and technologies, however, rather than state what I can’t do I will only state what I can, in a nutshell, these are some of the main points: n I have demonstrable experience of visual web design and front end web development work. n I have a good working knowledge of modern W3C Web Standards, HTML/XHTML/HTML5 and CSS best practices. n I have a good understanding of accessibility and the methods used for making websites accessible. n I can hand code semantic HTML mark-up and maintainable CSS style sheets using LESS and SASS. n I have an intermediate understanding of JavaScript, and an applied understanding of jQuery. n I have developed many cross-browser compatible UI’s and responsive websites. n I have a lot of experience working with older browsers from IE6 upwards. n I have good communication skills and am very experienced at working as part of a team or as an individual, able to manage my own tasks. n I have a good eye for detail and awareness of the main principals of UI design. n I am very experienced using Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator and image optimisation. n I have a good understanding of source code control systems, including SVN and GIT.

WEB DEVELOPMENT HTML It seems a while now since I last worked with XHTML, which I favoured over HTML4 - nowadays I only work in HTML5 using Modernizr to deal with older browsers and creating well-formed, semantic markup. One advantage of having programmed HTML for over 20 years is that you learn from your mistakes, and in my case I seldom make them twice. Techniques constantly change, and I always try and keep up with the pace of change. HTML5 has been a breath of fresh air and has brought a great deal of stability to the markup that is created today.

CSS I would say that I am extremely good with CSS and have many, many years of experience using it in all the projects I have worked on all the way back to 1996 when I created my first commercial website. My expertise lies in creating cross browser CSS, especially for older browsers down to IE6 and also responsive layouts. I have created my own grid system using LESS whereby a 12 or 16 column layout can be created with variables set up for a variety of margins and spacing.

LESS/SASS I initially started using SASS, then some places that I have worked at used LESS. Either way, they adopt fairly similar approaches to generating CSS and I feel confident using both. Recently I have been working on my own grid system using LESS whereby a 16 column layout can be created with variables set up for a variety of margins and spacing and on more general projects I have opted for SASS.

jQuery I have used jQuery extensively, and though I wouldn’t say that I have knowledge of the full stack, I do use a lot of it for HTML document traversal and manipulation, event handling and animation. I am confident using it and am always expanding my knowledge of how best to leverage it’s potential.

Javascript I came to javascript late in the day, after using jQuery, and have what I would call a rudimentary working knowledge of javascript - but in no sense would I consider myself a javascript developer. I am able to write small bespoke pieces of javascript where necessary, but mostly I use jQuery.

JSON I worked with JSON for the about ten months whilst working with a client’s framework, Adapt, amending it and building content using it. Grunt and Gulp tasks were run to compile and compress the project builds and would raise any erros. The JSON was used to create content which was then parsed using JS written into the framework.

XML I worked with XML for the about ten months whilst working with a client’s frameworks, amending it and building content using it. The XML was used to create content which was then parsed using JS written into the framework.

MVC I tend not to get too involved in MVC frameworks, though I do appreciate how they work and have had some experience of adjusting the javascript in views in order to change the way that a page is rendered or data is handled by a template. It is an area that I am willing to learn, and am learning during each project I work on.

Handlebars I have been using Handlebar templates in client frameworks for a while now, where JSON has been parsed and passed-in, and these have been relatively easy to maintain and work with.

Grunt and Gulp

I have been using Grunt quite a lot on recent jobs where tasks were set up for the client frameworks I have worked on, also for compiling my own LESS/SASS to CSS and more recently GULP, though I am seldom involved in the actual writing of the configs (apart from my own).

Accessibility I have coded a large number of websites to meet WCAG 1.0 which, even with the release of WCAG 2.0), I regard as a better set of guidelines that work more in favour of the user. Though I have been less involved in deploying accessibility in recent years, I still understand the main principles.

Version Control

Working with a variety of clients I have had to use a variety of repo technologies for version control from SVN to Git using either native programmes or the terminal.

Responsive Web Design

A lot of my recent work has been involved in taking existing websites and internal frameworks that were fixed dimensions, and making them responsive. These have been achieved using either Skeleton (a light weight basic CSS grid system) which I have enhanced or the Bootstrap framework as well as some client’s own frameworks. This is an ever-evolving technology and methods keep progressing over time and very quickly, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if there are huge shifts in responsive techniques used over the last few years. I am very confident coding responsive websites and I am aware of the many challenges as well as opportunities it can bring to a business.

Adapt I have spent 6 months working with the Adapt framework at CG Kineo, mainly theming eLearning courses for clients such as The FA (Football Association), Barclays, KPMG, BUPA, International SOS and Samsung to name but a few. The Adapt framework is a generic, reusable codebase for e-learning courses. The Framework is a JavaScript client-side application that delivers Responsive e-learning. E-Learning content is defined in JSON files which are included into a package along with various components or plugins. The Adapt Framework takes these JSON files, applies them to the included components and builds Responsive HTML5 pages using them.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE I provide my own equipment whether working through an agency or direct as it has been optimised for my work. This consists of an Apple MacBook Pro running applications for web development such as SublimeText (coding), MAMP Pro (local environments), Versions (SVN), Kaleidoscope (code comparison), Parallels Desktop (cross-browser testing) and terminal (grunt and build/update commands).

As well as programming I also run applications for visual design including the full suite of Adobe Cloud applications of which I use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign on a regular basis. I used the Office 365 suite of tools for documentation and planning in Word and Excel as well as Apple’s own programmes such as the iWork suite - Keynote, Pages and Numbers.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Adobe Photoshop

I use Adobe Photoshop nearly every day in visualising, photographic retouching or web design. I have used it extensively for may years and though I will not know all the functions available, I am more than competent in producing engaging and rich graphics using Photoshop.

Adobe Illustrator

I often use Adobe Illustrator, mainly for technical drawings when planning exhibitions or for creating icons and logotypes when working on branding projects. I mainly use Illustrator for 2D work where I am most comfortable.

Adobe InDesign

I have worked in Desk Top Publishing, originally with Quark, and I remember the switch over to InDesign. All my print design work and exhibition layout artwork is produced using InDesign. A true powerhouse for print design and publishing.

Apple Keynote

This may be a strange one to have down, but I have used Keynote to produce visually rich presentations for events and companies. It is a simple and quick tool for producing presentations that can be either shown, or distributed easily in PDF format.

Thinker and team player I would consider myself a clear thinker when I am asked to consult or help on projects I have been contracted to take part in. My aim is always to add to the project, to bring another perspective and offer advice where needed and take my place as a team member. As technology and web development techniques advance I am able to integrate and ready to learn new methods of working alongside other members of a development team.

Work experience 2004 - present Visutech Design Limited : freelance and contract I run my own business mainly on a freelance basis with a number of regular clients that I work with in between contracts that have been mostly in the north of England where I am based. The contracts have been varied from ecommerce to eLearning including companies like Victoria Plumb, UK Online Centres (Tinder Foundation), City & Guilds Kineo, Line Communications (LEO), Heath Wallace and LA Fitness to name a few.

Some of the projects I have worked on... Mary Holloway website November 2016 Having designed and built Mary’s website some years ago, it was time to update the website and create a mobile friendly version that she would be able to administer herself. The website has been built on Wordpress, allowing her the ability to post her own blog articles. It has a basic theme built on bootstrap 3 and the theme has been modified to suit the brand. New graphics and icons were created to enhance the treatments, classes and courses section of the website. The HJGS have recently staged the second Huddersfield Jazz guitar festival. Last year was a relatively small affair but this year we decided to create a major event, three days of concerts and workshops covering most styles of Jazz. . Mary Holloway

Acquablend - Ideal Home Show at Christmas exhibition Novembert 2016 Acquablend commissioned me to come up with the design for their stand at the Ideal Home Show at Christmas exhibition which was held at Olympia in London. Initial 3D mockups of the stand design were created and the necessary facia artwork created that reflected the brand and the theme of Christmas. A supporting presentation was also created which ran in the background on an LCD monitor which kept visitors informed whilst others were watching demonstrations or being served. In the run up to and after the event, a light social media campaign was run and a variety of images produced that were used to promote an extended offer. As a company, it is vitally important that we present the right image to the public, gaining trust and confidence. The stand designs and video presentation Tony did for us for the Ideal Home Show at Christmas in London were absolutely fantastic, receiving comments from both customers and the show organisers. The themes followed through nicely and helped to create engagement which contributed to a highly successful show. Tony’s attention to detail and ability for see the ‘complete picture’ produces a quality that has been invaluable to us at Acquablend.. Tony Herbert, CEO Acquablend

With just over 1 week to the event, all the assets for the printers required a quick turnaround with attention to detail and consistency of brand, which R.Benson have come to rely on me for to deliver.

Acquablend group of websites July to November 2016 As the Acquablend business has expanded, it now both the US, UK and Europe. This has meant there was a need to create separate sites for the regions to deal with tailored content and products, where previously they were shared. Built as a multisite in WordPress, these had new domains mapped to serve the USA, UK/ Europe as well as a corporate site. I built a series of bespoke components that allow a better use of imagery for custom headers at responsive sizes, which only load for the viewport assigned to them, as well as transforming the shops to display offer coupons and savings and other interface enhancements that were not native to wordpress or the theme. After having done an excellent job for us on a previous project, we had no hesitation in reengaging Tony to develop and manage our new international site. We knew that we needed a good communicator with all the other skills required to help co-ordinate the various software providers, with a level of clarity that ensured that we got exactly what we asked for. Tony definitely has the skills to work within a fast-changing, agile based environment. Providing the confidence to allow us to leave Tony to do what he had to, while we ran the business. Tony’s solid work ethic and attention to detail was prefect for our project. Our customers seem to be very happy with the results too. Tony Herbert, CEO Acquablend

Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Festival website June 2016 I was commissioned by Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society to produce a website for their Jazz Guitar Festival and some artwork for posters. This involved installing a basic wordpress template, integrating WooCommerce to handle ticket sales and modifying a lot of the CSS as well as providing new imagery and some bespoke jQuery functions to override the layout and introduce some new interface elements. As well as the website, some poster designs were created to support the event. The website allowed them to have a ‘go to’place where attendees and people who were interested could find all the information they needed about the 3 day event and also purchase tickets. The HJGS have recently staged the second Huddersfield Jazz guitar festival. Last year was a relatively small affair but this year we decided to create a major event, three days of concerts and workshops covering most styles of Jazz. We initially enlisted the help of Tony to build a website but it soon became apparent that he was able to design all the promotional material for the festival, from posters and fliers to the festival program as well as the website and social media providing continuity throughout and helping give the festival a visual identity. We’ll certainly be hoping that he can be available next year to help us with the festival and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him for any design work.. Darren Dutson Bromley, Festival Organiser

Working with Tony on our flagship Exhibition - Be:Fit London 2016 - has been excellent. His hard working approach and attention to detail helped us to maximise our exposure at this event, using both online and offline media. Tony’s wide range of technical skills were perfect for the scale of our project which had to work within tight timescales and budgets. Often providing myself with valuable professional insight and direction into areas I had not considered. Our Be:Fit London stand looked amazing with both online and printed materials linked in an effective way, giving my company a well put together professional image out in our target market. I would wholeheartedly recommend Tony and will continue to employ him on all our upcoming exhibitions. Tony Herbert, CEO Acquablend

The transition involved re-shooting all the products, rationalising the layout and creating a more coherant design and clearer user journey through the website. The re-brand and redesign of the website had an immediate effect with an increase in sales and the business is now in a good position to improve and present itself confidently. The team at Jet2 were great and the work was a change from the norm, was fast-paced and allowed me to broaden and refresh my design and coding skills in an area that I had previously worked in when working wit Rohan and Corbis.

Tony came to work at Jet2.com on a freelance basis in February 2016 - initially for a week. He came into the email team at one of our busiest times, and hit the ground running. Tony soon became indispensable, so much so that we decided to keep him on for 6 months whilst we were recruiting another designer. The great thing about Tony is you can give him a brief and he will get on with it. If he has any questions he isn’t afraid to ask. He’s willing to listen and isn’t afraid to give his own opinions on a creative to successfully deliver the job. His design has been on brand and creative, varying from simple hard hitting sales banners, to more creative, inspirational animated banners, there is nothing Tony can’t design. Coding and responsive templates have also been no problem and Tony adapted to our email management program with ease. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Tony as a freelancer and look forward to working with him again in the future. Darren Fisher, Senior E-mail Marketing Executive, Jet2.com

Acquablend eCommerce website Jan 2016 - March 2016 This was a very large project, taking the old website which had static links to Amazon and creating a new multisite Wordpress network to handle two eCommerce website for the US and UK customers. This involved integrating the a plugin that would allow the client to take payments whilst maintaining fulfillment from Amazon. There was a lot of new CSS written and functions with jQuery in order to create the useablility and visual impact that the client wanted. This involved a custom masonry grid for the header of the website on the home page that would guide visitors to key content on the website. As well as re-styling some of the out-of-the-box WooCommerce pages to be in more keeping with the website. Tony has undertaken a fantastic job in developing our e-commerce solution. His attention to detail and ability to communicate complex concepts provided the ideal platform for the creation of new ideas, just as creating user interfaces designed to increase Customer Engagement. Knowing that Tony was as part of the team really allowed us to concentrate on Sales Development and other areas. Tony has a wide range of skills with a deep understanding of his field. He provides a 360 degree view of the task/challenge in relation to your business, giving you complete confidence in his ability to deliver, as well as advice and support whenever needed. Our company has been extremely satisfied with the work that Tony has undertaken for us. The results and compliments from our online community are testament to that fact. Tony Herbert, CEO Acquablend

Darren Dutson Bromley responsive website Jan 2016 I was asked by Darren Dutson Bromley to update his website and make it ‘mobile friendly’, but on a tight budget. So I chose a sympathetic theme for WordPress and applied some custom CSS and imagery in order to keep the look and feel of the old website but allow for more functionality including the ability for Darren to update his gig listings and other content. I am very pleased with my new website designed by Tony Otyehel. My last one, also designed by Tony won an award and although I loved it I felt I’d reached a point where I needed something which was easy for me to add and edit content. The new design does just that. The layout is great, clear and easy to navigate and looks good on desktop, tablet and mobile phone too. I’ve recommended Tony to number of different people and I will continue doing so. Darren Dutson Bromley

CG Kineocontracted front-end development June 2014 - present I have been working on a recurring contract with CG Kineo in Sheffield on a variety of projects for companies such as The FA, Barclays, Bupa and Tesco to name but a few using their eLearning frameworks, predominantly their open source framework, Adapt. This has involved working with Learning Designers and Information Designers as well as technical staff to produce eLearning content with a variety of interactive interfaces leveraging animations using CSS and Javascript/jQuery. Some of the eLearning was required to operate on older systems down to IE6 which was normally a challenge, but as I have a wealth of experience and knowledge working with older browsers, this has allowed me to overcome many challenges. Learn My Way - Course Builder - contracted front-end development Dec 2013 - Jan 2014 As part of the upgrade to the Learn My Way website was a facility for tutrs to create their own courses using what would be called the CourseBuilder. This required some visual design but also had to take into account that it would be built on the Bootstrap framework.. I was provided with some simple wireframes of what the pages might conatian and produced a set of visuals which I developed alongside some modifications to the basic Bootstrap elements so I would know what was acheivable. This meant that there was effectively a set of Bootsrap templates and CSS that the client could take through to production which would increase the time to build. Tony very quickly produced elegant and simple designs for our new course creator tool, working flexibly to produce great visuals for a bootstrap based tool. Learn My Way - contracted front-end development Feb 2013 - Apr 2013 I was contracted by UK Online Centres to convert their ‘Learn My Way’ wesbsite from the old desktop-only version to a responsive version that would work across desktop, tablets and mobiles. Many of the original visual features that were achieved using graphics have now been converted to CSS only renderings with some enhancements through CSS transitions The Skeleton CSS framework was used as a starting point and a new set of CSS and HTML templates were developed and then integrated into the Drupal code and modules that drive the website. The layout of some of the aspects of the website design and the Drupal code initially presented some challenges, but these were dealt with easily - with the project being delivered on-time and to the clients great satisfaction. View website: http://www.learnmyway.com Tony worked with us at Online Centres Foundation on our Learn my way online learning system. During that time he took an ageing design and HTML/CSS codebase and brought it right up to date with a fresh feel and an elegant responsive code base, without affecting the familiarity of the site that our users value. Tony was able to quickly and efficiently convert an outlined vision into exactly how we had imagined it. Not only is his graphic design work very good, but his detailed knowledge of responsive HTML/CSS as well as the accompanying accessibility and browser compatibility issues is second to none. His attention to detail was superb throughout his time with us. He is certainly among the very best front end developers that I have worked with and I wouldn’t hesitate in calling on his services again or recommending his work to others. Rohan, Corbis, GuitarBytes, echelon - HTML email design and coding 2010-Present I work on a regular basis with agencies and companies to produce their HTML emails from PSD files I have designed or that they have provided - building them and testing them in a wide variety of email clients. Having designed and produced many HTML emails in my time, I am aware of all the workarounds and restrictions for many different email clients and build solid crossclient emails that will look great in anyone’s inbox. We called Tony in as a front-end developer for an urgent project. He was able to get up to speed very quickly with our internal systems and software. The Caribbean - website design and coding July 2012-Sept 2012 I have recently designed and built a new website for a the Caribbean Hotel, Bed and Breakfast in Doncaster after having stayed there for some time on business. The last website is very dated and has been greatly enhanced. The website has been built in HTML5 with CSS3 and jQuery enhancements throughout and incorporates a very simple bespoke CMS. View website: http://www.caribbean-hotel.co.uk The Results Centre - Visual design only May-June 2012 Alongside the YMSS and The Proposers website development I was also working with MSG London, supplying visual design services to their client, The Results Centre. I was responsible for designing and producing print artwork for their new brochure and product sheets as well as creating a new visual design for their website. Being aware of what is possible when it comes to coding a website can be a great help in the design process, allowing for the inclusion of dynamic/animated UI elements. DAAP Website re-design and build Oct 2011 - Nov 2011 Commissioned by Perminder Dhillon who runs the DAAP charity I was responsible for the re-design and build of a new website for them. Their old website was badly coded, had a awful UI and was not doing them justice. The website was built using XHTML and was targeted at browser going back to IE6. jQuery plugins were used to optimise space, adding sliding news and events panels. I made use of CSS3 enhancements for the UI with fallbacks for older browsers where applicable. Accessibility was also important, so addition features were added such as a server-side style-sheet switcher, alternative stylesheets, skip links, alternate links to an accessible video player as well as the correct use of ‘alt ‘and ‘title’ attributes throughout the website. HustockPhoto.com website visual design and front-end coding Apr 2011 - Sep 2011 I was contracted by hustockphoto in Hungary to develop a new logo and brand design that would carry through to the website. I was responsible for the visual design of the website as well as providing the front end code which was built with transitional XHTML and some CSS3 and jQuery enhancements. This code was then sent to Mimezis Kft to integrate into their back-end system. A lot of work went into the detail of many of the components that make up what is quite a complicated site, and I am very pleased with most of the results - even if some of the elements haven’t been implemented as cleanly as I would have liked.
