A short presentation of the means an artist uses to organize the elements within a work of art. Examples will be shown for each element, to demonstrate how to incorporate these principles into your compositions. We will then continue with: THE

KAREN PROJECT 2

November meeting will be the first of several meetings centering on our Karen Rhiner Project 2. For our “newbies”, Karen spent many years creating her version of Colored Pencil art. She bequeathed all items from her studio split between West Cost Drawing Group and our chapter. Karen passed in 2015, a happy artist. To honor her we have created this group project. Upon arriving at our meeting this month, you will find waiting for you, all sorts of pieces of Karen’s passion. You may take, at least one piece, for your Karen Project 2, integrating it into something new. You have “carte blanche’, go for it. We are giving you a Member’s Only, (free) “Karen Project 2” exhibition, here in our meeting room, of the Serra Mesa/Kearny Mesa Library, July/August 2017.

I hope you, your friends and family, found time to visit our most recent exhibition! We had days where groups of visitors spent time looking, and questioning if this beautiful art work had been accomplished with the “Colored Pencil”. Many visitors wondered how we created such depth and variation of color. One visitor, from England, left this message: “Hats Off”, and another visitor (an oil painter) wrote:“You are an inspiration”!! Our “sitters” brought their current project while “sitting”, allowing people to see how we create our wonderfully colorful masterpieces. A special “Thank You” to my trusty “crew”, several of whom spent more than one day in the gallery. So why do I want to be part of an exhibition (show)? It’s hard to explain, because in deciding to create art, I started out with only a dream. I wanted to be an artistic presence in Southern California. How would this play out? I had no idea what it would bring to me (inside). Being part of a show gives me the chance to look at other artists’ work. The thought comes, “if they can win an award, why can’t I?” I’m not thinking of $$$, I’m thinking of what is “said” about a person’s piece when it is looked at in a gallery. All the good feelings I get from exhibiting my work makes me feel proud, accomplished, whole. Of my many favorite artists, I’ll mention only three, first, “Georgia O’Keefe (she had guts), and her softness is so strong. In San Diego, Dianne Adams, her watercolor work makes me want to live “inside of it”. Finally, Bet Borgeson, colored pencil artist, her use of color and lines is very exciting! Seeing, even thinking about such pieces of “art” makes me very happy inside. It energizes me, I want to pull out a piece of paper, and dig deep within myself, exploring the joy of line & color. Experience your own joy, Bobbie

 Vicky DeLong Vicky is a ceramic artist who has been professionally working in clay for the past thirty years. She generally uses colored pencil when she begins drawing a design for a new clay project. The pencils have lent themselves to testing just the right colors for a new design. Many of her friends are colored pencil artists belonging to the Colored Pencil Society (CPSA) in San Diego, District Chapter (DC) 202. They encouraged her to work in colored pencil, not only to use them strictly for designing new clay projects. Many have also given her gifts of colored pencil sets and other supplies needed to create in colored pencil.

In 2014, Vicky gave a demonstration/workshop to CPSA DC 202 at one of their monthly meetings. She made six inch clay tiles so the members could experiment drawing on the tiles with whatever pencils they wished. Afterwards everyone discussed the success or not with drawing on the tiles. Since that time, when not creating in clay, Vicky goes to colored pencils. In late 2014, she became a member of National CPSA and DC 202. Prismacolor is her preferred brand of pencils because of the wide range of color choices and the waxy character of the pencils. Her colored pencil creations have been displayed at ~ 2014 – CPSA DC 202 Show Gallery 21/SVAC 2014 – Rancho San Diego Library with CPSA DC 202 2015 – Small Image Show Gallery 21/Spanish Village Art Center 2015 – “Color in the Park” juried show – CPSA DC 202 Gallery 21/SVAC Vicky’s art is created in her studio at the Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park, Studio 16B.  INVITE LIST We artists just love living in the right side of our brain, the free creative side. Some of us have a difficult time engaging the left side where we take care of business. As an artist in business for myself I find I have to toggle between the two. Someday when I am rich and famous, like next lifetime, I will have a business manager. In the meantime I persevere. Entering art shows is a part of my life. The artist reception is one of the most important elements of the show. Foremost on my mind is preparing for this event by sending out invitations via email or snail mail. I feel it is every artist's responsibility, as a show member, to do this. The success of every show depends on the attendees. In this day of computers it is very easy to create a distribution list. Once your distribution list, or group list, is created, you are ready to go. Now, simply create an email announcing the show. Be sure to include the most pertinent information and the date of the reception. About two weeks prior to the show or reception simply email this invitation out to your list using blind copy. Here the sender would be yourself, send to yourself and in the blind copy (BCC) field, put in the name of your group list. I call mine “Invites”. With one or two little presses of a button you can email out to everyone on your list. I email out to anyone who has shown interest in my art or an art show. I keep an open mind, I mail out to my doctors, friends, pharmacists, neighbors, salespeople, lawyers, florists, anyone new I meet, clerks, waiters, church acquaintances, and family members. Honestly I invite anyone and everyone I can think of. If they give me their email, and I state it is for this purpose, they get an invitation to any show I am in. One never knows who will become a patron or buyer. Some bring friends who want to acquire art! This is NOT difficult. I probably invite over 200 people. Usually 10-20% show up. This is the common statistic. The bigger the list the better the turn out and it is a win win for everyone! So create your distribution list as part of your proclamation of being an artist. Support yourself and your CPSA district chapter. There is nothing worse than going to a reception and the only people there are the artists. Be a team player, do your part. Live long and prosper as an artist, spread joy and beauty!
