PRINCIPAL’S LETTER China Student Exchange 2016 Hello to everyone at POPS from the China Exchange students and teachers of 2016 - Callum A, Acelin A, Gabe B, Finn C, Natika J, Dylan K, Lachlan M, Tess P, Thomas S, James T, Jack T, James W, Mrs Bian, Mr Thomson and Mrs Daniel. We arrived at Jinling Primary School in Nanjing at midnight on Sunday (2am Melbourne time) and were warmly welcomed by a group of teachers who showed us to our rooms. On Monday we were officially welcomed to the school in a lovely ceremony where the children and school were presented with gifts, a commemorative scarf and entertained by the students. We had two classes, a dance class and a PE class and a tour of the school. The school has four pets: two ducks and two black swans which live on the school lake around the pagoda. The school is very beautiful and has many facilities, lovely gardens and sculptures, as well as a mini Great Wall! We also have a special dining room where we have all our meals, which are delicious and healthy. On Tuesday we had classes in calligraphy and Chinese language and we were joined by some students of Jinling PS to help us with our pronunciation. In the afternoon we had an excursion to Dr Sun Yatsen's mausoleum on Zijing Mountain. We went through a beautiful forest and then walked up 287 steps to the top. We also listened to traditional Chinese flute playing. On Wednesday we attended classes in maths, Chinese and calligraphy. In the afternoon we went to Confucius Temple and visited the old town of Nanjing which has many beautiful old buildings and bridges. We did some shopping and then had dinner in a restaurant which specialises in traditional Nanjing snack; the salty duck, dumplings and sticky rice desserts were tasty. Mrs Bian loved the red bean paste and rice dumpling pudding and Mrs Daniel spilt her soup dumpling all over herself and we all felt very full! Tomorrow and Friday we have two full days of classes at Jinling PS and a closing ceremony where we will perform a dance and play the Chinese flute. On Saturday we will spend the day with our host families and then catch the bullet train to Suzhou. We are having a wonderful time in China and learning a lot including eating with chopsticks every day!! We are all well and happy and look forward new exciting adventures each day. Farewell from the China Exchange students and teachers of 2016

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT School Uniform Lately we have noticed a number of students wearing incorrect school uniform or wearing colours that are not bottle green or gold. We have a uniform dress code at POPS because it reinforces in our students a pride in their own appearance and instils a sense of community. The POPS uniform policy states the expectations POPS staff, School Council and parent community holds with regard to student appearance. Read more Here are some reminders about school uniform expectations: Student school uniforms must be in the school colours of gold and bottle green with the Park Orchards Primary School logo Students should wear:  White or bottle green socks  School bottle green windcheater or bomber jacket with logo  Gold short or long sleeved polo shirts with school logo  Winter tunic, skirt or summer dress purchased from the uniform shop  Bottle green shorts, skorts or pants  A POPS sunhat purchased from the school uniform shop consistent with the Sunsmart policy  Gold or green or white hair ties, ribbons or headbands  Students may only wear earlobe stud earrings or sleepers and watches as jewellery pieces  Other than clear nail polish, cosmetics may not be worn at school  Black school shoes or runners

Start of the School Day Parents are encouraged not to enter classrooms in the morning unless they are a rostered parent helper. We are noticing that in the morning some classrooms are quite hectic and this can be very unsettling and overwhelming for many students at the start of the day. If you do need to talk to your child’s teacher please organise a mutually convenient time to meet. As you can appreciate between 8:45- 9am our teachers are preparing for the day’s lessons. Mind your Language by Michael Grose (Australia’s No 1 parenting educator) Standards may change, but the job of parents hasn’t altered. Teach kids to use language that doesn’t offend others. The message to get across to the next generation is – if it’s offensive then choose other words or say nothing at all. Read more… Ms Garrity ACTING PRINCIPAL
