PRINCESS DIANA, THE MUSICAL Book by Karen Sokolof Javitch and Elaine Jabenis Music and Lyrics by Karen Sokolof Javitch

SYNOPSIS: Princess Diana, the Musical tells the story of Charles and Diana, focusing on their courtship, their marriage and her relationship with the public and the rest of the royal family. The musical culminates with her divorce, but ends at the time of her funeral. As the musical progresses, it portrays the evolution of the young Diana into the intelligent, mature woman who became the most famous woman in the world. The show begins with Princess Diana singing part of the song, “There Was a Time”―a love song about her relationship with Charles. After this poignant moment, the action moves back in time to start when the seventeen year-old Lady Diana Spencer is invited to Prince Charles’ thirtieth birthday gala. Here we also meet the other key players - the Queen, Prince Philip and the Queen Mother. Charles is frustrated because his parents are applying pressure on him to find a suitable young woman to marry. Although Diana “fancies” Charles, they don’t go out together until he invites her to a barbecue eighteen month later. From this point on, the story is well-known: the romance, the wedding, the cold welcome into the royal family, his desperation at her rising popularity, her desperation to be a loved and loving wife. Camilla is seen briefly in the musical, and though her presence throughout is felt, it is not explicit―manifesting itself solely in the words, deeds and thoughts that Charles and Diana share. Fergie, Diana’s sister-in-law, is Diana’s close friend and confidant throughout the show. The musical has a bias towards Diana - it tells her story. But Charles and the senior Royal Family are not portrayed as the “villains of the piece.” They are seen more as people with various expectations and needs which are either too rigidly enforced or not sufficiently explained to others. In the end, one is left feeling sorry at the situation in which all the participants find themselves.

2

PRINCESS DIANA, THE MUSICAL That being said, the musical is a celebration of Diana’s life and the songs reflect that diversity. There are over 30 songs, ranging from inspirational to comedic to romantic, with humour, laughter and love. The ballad that will bring tears to the eyes of all Princess Diana lovers is “There Was a Time,” which reiterates the fact that while she loved Prince Charles, there are doubts that he ever loved her. You’ will leave this musical humming “Hope in My Heart,” for that is truly what Princess Diana gave to us. CAST OF CHARACTERS

PRINCESS DIANA, THE MUSICAL NOTES TO THE DIRECTOR: If at all possible, the authors would prefer English accents for the main characters. All costume changes that the writers suggest are optional. Stage directions are also optional as are the photos that are suggested.

This musical works well with one set, although of course you can have more than one set. It has been performed with pillars or with a pillar backdrop and with a revolve in the middle of the stage as a place for Diana to change while still on stage. Princess Diana, the Musical has also been produced as a cabaret show. There are many options and the authors are very flexible and would help and even travel to your city if needed. If they could, they would also love to come and see one of your performances. ITEMS PROVIDED BY THE AUTHORS: □ Tabloid newspapers □ Magazines □ Princess Diana’s white beaded jacket for first scene □ Princess Diana’s wig

Do you know my uncle? DIANA: Of course. Lord Mountbatten. (He takes her hand. She curtsies and smiles again.) LORD MOUNTBATTEN: It’s a pleasure, Lady Diana. You’ve grown up since the last time I saw you. DIANA: Thank you. It’s so nice to see you again. CHARLES and MOUNTBATTEN walk away, talking to others. DIANA walks over to FERGIE; they look at each other and giggle. DIANA: Oh, Fergie, isn’t he handsome? FERGIE: Personally, I fancy his brother, Prince Andrew. He’s more my type. Have you seen him around? DIANA: No. Shall we go and find him? (She takes FERGIE’s hand and they run away, giggling. DIANA and FERGIE stay offstage for a clothes change.) CHARLES spots Camilla. CHARLES: Hello, Camilla. You look lovely tonight. CAMILLA: Thank you, Charles. CHARLES: Would you tell me something? Are you happy? CAMILLA: I’m managing. My husband is happy. It seems this is how things have to be. CHARLES: I will call you later.

Of course, it’s a great deal to put up with, but you have a great deal to give someone. I’ve seen the loving side of you, Charles. It will happen, son. Chin up now. (MOUNTBATTEN puts his arm around him.) CHARLES: Thanks, Uncle. I don’t know what I would do without you. THE QUEEN and PRINCE PHILIP come over.

THE QUEEN: Lord Mountbatten. LORD MOUNTBATTEN: (Bowing.) Your Majesty. (Shakes PHILIP’s hand.) Charles and I were just speaking about next summer. We hope to go on holiday together. ACT ONE, SCENE 3 SUMMER BARBECUE, 1980

NARRATOR: The following summer, Prince Charles’ most beloved Uncle – Lord Mountbatten, is killed in an IRA bombing. Charles is devastated and thinks of nothing else for months. But finally, 2 summers after his birthday party, the Prince invites Lady Diana to a royal barbeque. This scene is a pivotal one in the relationship between CHARLES and DIANA. CHARLES is drawn to DIANA because of her empathy towards him since LORD MOUNTBATTEN’S death the previous summer. DIANA and FERGIE enter. 13

PRINCESS DIANA, THE MUSICAL

DIANA: I’m a little nervous about seeing Prince Charles again. I haven’t seen him since Lord Mountbatten’s funeral last year. Charles was so close to him. FERGIE: That was such a tragedy for everyone. But let’s not think about that now, Duch. Have you seen Charles’ brother yet? DIANA: (Laughs.) Prince Andrew? You’ve got it bad, don’t you, Fergie? No, I haven’t seen him, but I’m glad you’re here. Everyone else seems a bit older than we are. FERGIE: Yes, they all seem to be around Charles’ age―except for Andrew.

CHARLES enters and walks over to them.

CHARLES: Hello Diana, Fergie. Are you enjoying yourself this weekend, ladies? I hope you know some of the guests. DIANA: Oh yes, sir. Everyone has been so nice to us. FERGIE: Well, I’m going to scoot now. (She turns to CHARLES.) Do you know where your brother Andrew is? CHARLES: I believe he is watching the polo game. FERGIE: Thanks. See you later. (She curtsies.) Exit FERGIE.

DIANA: We watched a bit of your polo game, sir. You seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. CHARLES: Yes, it was good fun today. Probably because I didn’t take a tumble. My uncle, Lord Mountbatten, used to say I wasn't hard enough on my horses. He was probably right. He was right about so many things. DIANA: I am so sorry about your uncle’s death. I know how you must miss him. CHARLES: Thank you, Diana. DIANA: I was there, at his funeral. Your grief was so overwhelming. My heart went out to you. I thought it was wrong for you to be so lonely. CHARLES: He was like a father to me. I don’t think I will ever come to terms with his death. 14

DIANA: That’s how I felt when my grandmother died. Oh, excuse me, sir. I didn’t mean to - CHARLES: No, please. Tell me more. DIANA: After my parents divorced, my Granny was the only one there for me. But soon after that, she died. My world fell apart again. CHARLES: I’m so sorry, Diana. How old were you when your parents divorced? DIANA: I was six. I sat on the staircase and watched my mummy leave our home. I sat there for the longest time, but she never came back. CHARLES: Strangely enough, I think I understand how you felt. My mother didn’t seem to be home much either...duty and all, you know. DIANA: Of course. That must have been extremely difficult for you. CHARLES: Hmm. Once when I was maybe five or six, the Queen was gone for many months. Finally, she was returning home. I went with my nanny to the boat. I counted every second until I could see her again. She was finally in front of me, and I expected this great big hug and...she shook my hand. I held back my tears and shook her hand. (He looks at Diana.) I think that is why I miss my uncle so much. He filled a great void in my life. SONG #4: IN MY LIFE (CHARLES AND DIANA)

CHARLES: IN MY LIFE, IN MY LIFE I’VE ALWAYS FELT SO LOST... (Spoken.) so alone. My uncle,

(Sung.) HE BECAME THE FATHER I HAD NEVER KNOWN. (Spoken.) Then he was killed... (Sung.) I WAS IN SHOCK AND LEFT ALONE AGAIN, ANGRY AT THE WORLD FOR TAKING THIS GREAT MAN. (Spoken.) I couldn’t make sense of it!

DIANA: You do work extremely hard, sir. But I suppose it's better than having a routine job in some dull firm. CHARLES: The royal family is the “firm,” Diana, and the monarchy is a job. A very demanding job. DIANA: (In awe of him.) You will make a wonderful king. CHARLES: Do you think so? You are a woman of impeccable taste! DIANA: And you are funny. CHARLES: Am I? Well, yes. Perhaps I am. (Pause.) Tell me, Diana. How are all of the little ones you have been teaching? DIANA: They are wonderful, sir. We have so much fun together. And did I tell you? I’ve also taken a job as a nanny. CHARLES: That’s wonderful. I would have liked a nanny like you. DIANA: Thank you. We laugh a lot. CHARLES: Do you now? I suppose I don’t laugh enough. Too much responsibility. But...you make me laugh. DIANA: Do I? CHARLES: Yes. Yes, you do. Um, Diana, do you like to dance? DIANA: Why, I love to dance. With whom? MICHAEL: (Not wanting to answer.) With, ah, the...Parker Bowles’. Now, if you will excuse me... DIANA: But Andrew Parker Bowles is not in town. MICHAEL: My mistake, M'lady. His Royal Highness will be lunching with Mrs. Parker Bowles. DIANA: With Camilla? Oh. Just good friends getting together. MICHAEL: (Relieved, he starts to exit quickly.) Yes, M’lady. Good day. (She notices the box.) DIANA: Michael. What is that? A present from Charles? MICHAEL: This? Oh, I was just taking it― DIANA: (She grabs the box.) Oh, I won’t tell him that I opened it! I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise! (She giggles, opens the box and takes out a bracelet.) Oh, it’s so pretty and it’s engraved. It says… (She slowly realizes it’s not for her.) Why, this isn’t for me. This is for Camilla! MICHAEL: (Slowly, he takes the box from her.) I am sorry, M’Lady. 29

When “They Say, They Say,” is spoken, the newspapers are brought down and the tabloid people look at the audience. QUEEN MUM: Well, you asked me to come, so here I am. I sense there is a problem. THE QUEEN: Diana. She is the problem. They have been married only three months, and it seems that the honeymoon is over. Her behavior seems to be quite strange. QUEEN MUM: You were so pleased with Diana as a choice. You encouraged it. What happened? THE QUEEN: Well, she is quite different from what I had expected. She just doesn’t behave like a royal. Frankly, she is not my sort. PHILIP: We don't favor her. QUEEN MUM: And why is that? PHILIP: For starters, she doesn’t enjoy being in the country. QUEEN MUM: (Sarcastically.) Now there's a cardinal sin. THE QUEEN: Charles loves the country. She doesn’t fit in. QUEEN MUM: Well, she certainly has other virtues. (THE QUEEN and PHILIP look at each other.) Oh dear, this sounds serious. THE QUEEN: I'll tell you how serious. She is only interested in clothes, pop music, shopping, and talking on the telephone. She also converses with the kitchen staff! QUEEN MUM: That serious, THE QUEEN: It gets worse. Do you know what she watches on the telly? (Pause.) Soap operas! (Pause.) Well, what do you think? QUEEN MUM: I wonder if she saw “As the World Turns” yesterday. I missed it. THE QUEEN: Not to mention her enormous appetite! After dinner, Cook tells us she goes down to the kitchen looking for ice cream and pastries, yet she grows thinner by the day. I tell you, there is something wrong with that girl! QUEEN MUM: Well, now that we have exposed all of those flaws in the princess' character, what is the real reason for all of this anger? PHILIP: We have just told you. QUEEN MUM: The real reason. THE QUEEN: (Picks up a magazines.) Look at these! Every one of them has a picture of Diana on the cover! Since they have been married, every program on the telly discusses nothing else but “Lady Di.” “Lady Di,” they call her! How disgustingly familiar. (Hands a magazine to the QUEEN MUM.) PHILIP: It is suddenly as though no one else in the royal family exists! QUEEN MUM: So that's it. THE QUEEN: What? QUEEN MUM: Jealousy. Unfortunately, none of us has ever endeared ourselves as effectively to the people, it seems. THE QUEEN: And she has? QUEEN MUM: Obviously. She's young. She’s pretty. She’s a fairytale princess. She appears so...vulnerable. That makes her seem like one of them. Oh, it will all fizzle out in time, but what about their honeymoon being over? That concerns me. THE QUEEN: Apparently there are shouting matches, slamming doors, and her incessant crying! (Hands her back the magazine.) QUEEN MUM: (Reassuringly.) Let me have a quiet word with Charles. I’ll see if I can get to the bottom of this. The QUEEN MUM exits. After she has gone, THE QUEEN shows the magazine to PHILIP and angrily throws it onto the floor.

Serious trouble. CHARLES: There is no marriage. Only a mistake. A serious mistake. This whole thing wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t felt so pressured to marry and to... QUEEN MUM: (Interrupting.) I am sorry, Charles. Be that as it may, Diana is your wife, and she is carrying your child. Thank goodness she didn’t lose the baby! But...to avoid any further disasters, I recommend that you resolve this situation! And as soon as possible! CHARLES: I will try my best. Where is she now? QUEEN MUM: She is resting quietly upstairs. CHARLES: I’ll go and see her. Please, don’t worry.

PRINCESS DIANA, THE MUSICAL

Pe Do rus a No l O t C nly op y

QUEEN MUM: I am worried. We are all worried. Listen, Charles. Marriage is not easy―especially in this family. She needs your help. When your grandfather became king, he was so unsure of himself, but I was there to help him. CHARLES: But she is so unreasonable, Granny. I don’t feel what I want to feel for her. QUEEN MUM: You need to try harder, Charles. And there is one important thing you can do to help your marriage. CHARLES: And what would that be? QUEEN MUM: Stop seeing Mrs. Parker-Bowles. CHARLES: I am sorry, but I cannot do that. Other than you, Camilla is the only person I can talk to. If you will excuse me now, Granny, I must attend to Diana. (He kisses her on the cheek and walks out.) QUEEN MUM: Charles, listen to your grandmother. Even though we can’t choose our destiny, our destiny is determined by our choices.
