Inspection report About the service This service was previously registered with the Care Commission and transferred its registration to the Care Inspectorate on 1 April 2011. The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. Information about all care services is available on our website at www.careinspectorate.com. Primary Playcare - Woodfarm was registered with the Care Commission on 21 April 2005. The service operates from within a local Pavilion in the Giffnock area of East Renfrewshire. It is one of six services provided by Primary Playcare Limited and is registered to care for a maximum of 49 children attending primary school. The service operates Monday to Friday from 7:45 am to 9:00 am and 2:45 pm to 6:00 pm term time. During the school holidays the service operates from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The service's aims include: "To offer play and educational opportunities that are both fun and challenging. A respectful and happy relationship between children and staff is developed in a safe and structured environment."

What people told us We issued 17 Care Standard Questionnaires (CSQ) and received 10 completed forms from parents. In addition to this we spoke with 10 children who attended on the day of inspection. Parents told us they were very happy with the service provided. They believed staff to be genuinely interested in the children and valued the strong relationships staff had established with their children. Children we spoke with told us they were very happy at the service and enjoyed the variety of activities they took part in. They said staff ask them for their suggestions and involve them in planning activities. They also spoke fondly about the staff caring for them.

Self assessment The Care Inspectorate received a fully completed self-assessment from the manager. However, no areas for improvement were identified by the manager and the grades were not consistent with our findings.

From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership

What the service does well

Inspection report The service had maintained the very good practice in providing positive outcomes for the children and their families since the last inspection. The staff team were motivated and enthusiastic. They understood the aims of the service and were confident in carrying out their role. They were aware of strengths and where to make improvements. They welcomed feedback and suggestions from parents, ensuring parents felt involved in the service. We saw personal plans that reflected individual children and also parents views on their child and their progress and learning. We spoke with staff and children who were familiar with "Getting it Right For Every Child", (GIRFEC) the national approach in Scotland to improving outcomes and supporting the wellbeing of our children and young people. Staff could detail how they were meeting children's needs by creating an environment and providing activities that reflected the well-being indicators. We saw the Well-being Indicators of GIRFEC imbedded in planning. We saw displays where children had suggested what the well-being indicators meant for them and how staff were meeting these. Children we spoke with told us about their involvement in activity and topic planning. A recent project had been to plan, organise and produce a talent show which the children had especially enjoyed. We also saw plans for a 'dance class' again suggested by children. The children had made notices and advertised the class and encouraged other children to attend. Although the class had not started yet the plans were in place for this. We saw very good relationships between staff and children. Staff spoke to the children with respect and understanding. They encouraged children to be vocal and make suggestions. They recognised when children were not themselves and prompted soft questions and offered support. On the day of inspection children were not outdoors, however the space available indoors allowed them to participate in active physical games. They could also choose to play quieter games upstairs in the rooms available.

What the service could do better The service had a safer recruitment policy in place, this told us the provider was aware of checks and procedures that should be followed to ensure the safety of children attending the service. However, on viewing staff files we found some suitability references had been returned to the service after the employee had commenced employment, or some had not been returned at all. We spoke with the provider about this and also about the content and quality of a suitable reference. If references do not give details on the suitability of an employee, the provider cannot then confirm that person's suitability to care for children. This could put children at risk from harm. (see requirement 1).

Requirements Number of requirements: 1 1. To ensure children are kept safe and protected at all times, the provider must: i. Ensure safe recruitment practices are carried out for all staff, including the receipt of 2 references which give a suitable account of the candidates fitness to work with children, and professional registration check prior to commencement of employment
