Éditoria l 20 years in the service of the lighting – Path « Céline Wright creates lighting fixtures like poems, feathers of softness, flying whales, floating butterflies, enlighted stones. Her whole creation is transcended by her vision of interior worlds. » Juliette Binoche Twenty years ago, japanese paper met Céline Wright design. Céline gave an organic shape to this material to create « Cocons » lightings. Since then, they are still representative of the brand. Lightness, poetry and balance defines the style which marks the spirits. Trained at Duperré High School in textiles, she creates inspired by the pleasure of manipulating the material. Washi paper and minimalism of the japanese culture discovered during her childhood in Tokyo made her way. The encounter with Pascal Mourgue, Patrice Hardy and collaborator Franck Fortecoef fosters her perception of design. Twenty years ago, at the climax of industrial design, Céline Wright explores craft technics and defines herself like craftsman-designer. Today, the will to work the paper until its utmost gives birth to more and more sculptural pieces. In 2014, Envol lampfloor and L’Âme pendant in 2015 are made with white marble and carved walnut. The use of these luxury materials shows that paper is also one of them. Such as iconic artist Isamu Noguchi, creator of Akari (16 x 16 x 230 cm) lamps in paper and sculptures for UNESCO in Paris and Hiroshima memorial for Peace, Céline Wright continue her path of craft designer – sculptor ….we wish for 20 more years ! Birthday – Event At this occasion, alongside with Maison & Objet’s birthday, Céline Wright throws a cocktail at the fair Sunday 25th of January at 5 pm, hall 8 stand E22.

Eastern inspiration

Celine Wright and the art of hand-made products, “Made in France”

English from her father’s side and Franco-Algerian from her mother’s, Céline Wright discovered the world of design with her mother. Between London, Paris and Tokyo, brought up in a Franco-Japanese secondary-school, Céline was impressed by eastern culture from where she obtained her love for paper. Back to Paris, she studied at the “École des Arts Appliqués Duperré” (High School of Design, Fashion and Creation), the same school her mother studied at a generation before. 1989 : Trained at the Duperré High School, Céline then graduated from the “École Supérieure des Arts Appliqué” (textiles) 1990 : Designer at “Louis Vuitton” designed the “Vanity Case” range 1990 - 1993 : Fashion designer for “Catimini” 1994 : Creation of decorative objects for “Paola Navone” - Italie 1994 - 1997 : Creation of contemporary lamps distributed by the “Pachyderme” company 1997 : Production by the “Roset” company of the “ Comète” lamp and the “Sémaphore” vase 1997 : Céline participated as a special guest in the “Talents” section at the Maison & Objet fair

For Céline Wright, “hand-made craftsmanship is the only non-polluting human energy”. All her items are therefore hand-made. It mixes ancestral techniques reviewed and corrected by using modern methods. The materials used are natural and non-polluting. The making of a lamp requires different types of expert handling. That’s why the designer has created a real home-based network of craftsmen based on the English model baptized “cottage industry”, which is highly successful manufacturing. In this way each lamp is unique. Moulded and structured by hand “a shell of the “cocon” range can be made up of more than 1600 paper strips, individually glued on a mould.“ Its realization may take up to seven hours”, states the designer. The cocoon is solid, unbreakable, tear proof, and spreads a soft and soothing light.

Since this date, Céline produces her own lamps. Based in Montreuil, near Paris, Céline Wright works in her own workshop where she also uses to show her creations. She welcomes interior decorators, architects and journalists who don’t hesitate to cite her as an example alongside famous designers such as Philippe Starck, Noguchi or Ingo Maurer. Céline Wright collaborates with well-known names of exclusive decoration collections such as : Roche Bobois, Steiner, Atelier Sedap

Birth of an object

A lesson of things

From a simple pencil drawing which defines the lines of an object, Céline Wright moulds a shape she wants “unique and alive”. Just like a sculptor, the designer carries out a volume with the help of specific materials which will then give birth to a form. With this form, she lets the matter and the light carry her, according to a speculative and artistic approach which favours desire and attractiveness.

Céline celebrates the pleasure of gesture and lets herself be guided by her desires. Drawing her creative energy from the heart of the material, she takes her inspiration from nature and bases her approach on details observation. These objects are the results of her careful eye focused on the natural world that surrounds us: a bark that catches a ray of sun, flowers scattered on a foot path, a creased fabric hanging on a cord, caught in the light and wind. Her lamps are like a stroll in the heart of nature and mineral.

“Beforehand, to push the potential of a material to its utmost, by experimentation and play, is necessary to me”, says Céline. The pleat or the crease of a paper, its sound and sensuality, are for her, indications she will follow. Just like a fashion designer who works with a fabric, Celine “listens” to paper. This similarity in the process of creation can be explained by her first training in textiles at the Duperré High School. The designer gives its badge of honour to this “forgotten material” in our industrial world as she says. The Washi, Japanese paper, groups together many properties still quite unknown in Europe : it’s tear-proof, unbreakable, flexible, fine and functional. It illustrates perfectly Jean de La Fontaine’s fable “Le Chêne et le Roseau”, the obvious fragility of the paper which doesn’t show anything and its resistance that can compete with any other material.

A traditional approach to design “To decompartmentalize arts and crafts and design” : here is Céline Wright’s credo who describes herself willingly as a craftsman-designer, regarding craftsmen to be people who participate actively to decoration and design. She underlines the fact that in the oriental countries, the craftsman is a designer who uses natural materials to create decorative and functional objects, bringing sophisticated technique to the process. Recognized on the design scene with environmental and sustainable values, she claims a traditional approach to her creations and her way of thinking.

www.celinewright.com

The “nature” signature In our virtual era, where designs are cold and uncluttered, Céline invites us to take a different path. What she wants out of her creations is for traditional arts and techniques to live together with the strictness of contemporary design, thus making objects with clean shapes and naturally imperfect materials come alive. Since creating her first cocoon-shaped lamps which have made her reputation, the designer stays truthful to her approach and signs objects which know how to take advantage of each natural material whilst easing the terrestrial constraints. Floaty lamps like weightless suns, Céline Wright’s creations teach us the obvious once again.

Architectural Projects For some years now, Céline Wright has made special formats for contemporary places upon requests of architects. A new perspective which has led her to design “Cirrus”, a tall ceiling lamp specially imagined for big volumes. Recently, “Sphères” and“ H2O” have allowed to recreate “molecular chains” for a space effect. “My lamps in Japanese paper bring an organic touch in contemporary architecture with pure and sober lines”, says the designer.

A few testimonies How to enhance desks in a 200m2 office with a ceiling height of 4,20 m? “We had to play with this big space, to recalibrate it, to make it look more human and poetic”, says Elizabeth Naud. “We didn’t want traditional office lighting but something smooth and elegant. Céline Wright’s lamps were perfect for this project. We decided to place a lot of lamps on different levels to create a soft and unusual atmosphere for that type of area”. Offices Place Vendôme in Paris - Architects: Elizabeth Naud and Luc Poux. (2007. Nuages and Giboulées selection) “At first, my project was entirely masculine, with angles, oak and zinc, says François Muracciole. Céline Wright’s work, out of step from my work, was able to seduce me because it indisputably brings softness and roundness. A real feminity was missing. The Nuage lamp, light, is aptly named: it comes from a dream, from nowhere. When I see Céline Wright’s lamps, I see her hands. Her work is poetry”. Descamps shops. Architect: François Muracciole. (Pilot store in London in July 2007. Then Lyon in February 2008 and Anvers in May 2008. Second outlet in London in June 2008 – Nuage selection) “In well-organized universes like often shops are, Céline Wright’s lamps express freedom and lightness”, says Patrice Hardy. “If the rendering of the light is beautiful, it’s the moment of poetry that is offered which interests me most”. With a great feeling for ecology, Patrice Hardy also enjoys the hand-made aspect of the designer’s work, and the choice of a noble and simple material that is paper. Fermob.
