Welcome letter

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the second edition of Photo Shanghai. A number of advantageous factors, including Shanghai’s geographic position, the strong network of collectors in the Asia-Pacific region and the thriving local art scene, are elements we believe will prove this edition to be a great success. For its 2015 edition, Photo Shanghai brings together a curated and elegant exhibition of over 500 works of art for sale in a unique setting. Presented by 47 leading international galleries from Asia, Europe and the US at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, the fair is situated within Shanghai’s premier luxury neighbourhood on the West Nanjing Road. The satellite programme this year will feature an exhibition of 155 works by photographer Taryn Simon, curated by Gagosian Gallery and Photo Shanghai and a cutting-edge video curation by the father of video art in Asia - Professor Zhang Peili. Alongside these, you will also find some very engaging exhibitions presented by our partners. Our talks programme also contains a very rich line-up of artist talks, including Jimmy Nelson, Jacob Aue Sobol and Yuki Onadera, to name but a few. They are joined by a host of experts and curators who will explore the idea of collecting & curating photography on an international scale. We would like to thank our leading partners who have helped make this Fair possible: Mercedes-Benz, Swarovski, De Beers, Leica, American Express, Hublot, Hotel Indigo, WSJ. The Wall Street Journa Magazinel, Modern Media Group, Light & Salt, Domus Aurea and Castel. We look forward to welcoming you to the Fair. With very best regards,

Alexander Montague-Sparey Fair Director, Photo Shanghai

Feature exhibitions Taryn Simon’s Bird of the West Indies, presented by Gagosian Gallery In Asia for the first time, a special museum scale exhibition of 155 works by celebrated American artist Taryn Simon will be presented by Gagosian Gallery. Simon’s seminal Birds of the West Indies series showcases the artists unique weaving of photography, text and graphic design which has made her one of the finest contemporary photographers working today. Artist description

© Taryn Simon, Details from Birds from the West Indies PART 1, 2013. Courtesy of Gagosian Gallery

In 1936, an American ornithologist named James Bond published the definitive taxonomy Birds of the West Indies. Ian Fleming, an active bird-watcher living in Jamaica, appropriated the name for his novel’s lead character. He found it “flat and colourless,” a fitting choice for a character intended to be “anonymous. . . a blunt instrument in the hands of the government.” This co-opting of a name was the first in a series of substitutions and replacements that would become central to the construction of the Bond narrative. Taryn Simon’s Birds of the West Indies takes the name and format of the original Bond’s taxonomy to present an inventory of women, weapons, and vehicles—recurring elements in the James Bond films between 1962 and 2012. This visual database of interchangeable variables used in the production of fantasy examines the economic and emotional value generated by their repetition. It also underlines how they function as essential accessories to the myth of the seductive, powerful, and invincible Western male. Maintaining the illusion upon which the Bond narrative relies––an ageless hero with an inexhaustible supply of state-of-the-art weaponry, luxury vehicles, and desirable women—requires a constant process of replacement. A contract exists between the Bond franchise and the viewer that binds both to a set of expectations. In servicing the desires of the consumer, fantasy becomes formula, and repetition is required; viewers demand something new, but only if it remains essentially the same. Ten of the fifty-seven women Simon approached to be part of Birds of the West Indies declined to participate. Their reasons included pregnancy, not wanting to distort the memory of their fictional character, and avoiding any further association with the Bond formula. Simon represents each missing woman by reinserting the black rectangle cut from the mat to frame their would-be portrait, covering and at the same time representing their absence. Simon’s film Honey Ryder (Nikki van der Zyl), 1962 documents the most prolific agent of substitution in the Bond franchise. From 1962 to 1979, Nikki van der Zyl, an unseen and uncredited performer, provided voice dubs for over a dozen major and minor characters throughout nine Bond films. Invisible until now, van der Zyl further underscores the interplay of substitution and repetition in the preservation of myth and the construction of fantasy. The sequencing of women, weapons, and vehicles in Birds of the West Indies was determined using a random number generator called the Mersenne Twister, used for statistical simulations and in computer programming languages. By randomly reconfiguring the ordering of the works, Birds of the West Indies continuously mimics a longing for endless reiteration unaffected by time and history. • Location: FE01

Shanghai Art Week Photo Shanghai is part of Shanghai Art Week. Combing West Bund Art & Design (8-13 Sept.), Photo Shanghai (10-13 Sept.) and Art in the City Festival (11-14 Sept.), the very best in contemporary art takes over the city in September. Art lovers and collectors can enjoy exciting new exhibitions, talks and events by leading Chinese and international museums, galleries and art institutions across the city.

Art in the City Festival This year Art In The City Festival – the annual event organized by Art In The City – will take place from September 11 to 14, 2015. It is a place of new discoveries, dedicated to curated solo shows and group exhibitions by emerging artists, showcased by galleries and independent art spaces, both new and established. The overall theme of the exhibition is Stop Making Sense, to explore the surreal relationship between artists, our living environment, and change. It is an exhibition about biographies and autobiographies, about cities and landscapes, small communities and our cosmopolitan world, about heritage and the way we absorb it. Its key word is “storytelling”: to try and make sense of the world – sometimes turning it upside down. Exposing to collectors and art lovers the new Chinese art scene, the 17 projects of 2015 are complemented by a series of on- and off-site talks and special projects.
