OCEAN CRUISE PAX EUROPE, SUMMARY 2009 • 4.944.000 passengers in 2009, close to 5 million European cruisers • Germany breaking the million passenger figure for the first time • UK (31%), Germany (21%) and Italy (16%) remain the European market share leaders • Benelux ranks 7th as European source market • Scandinavia was the fastest growing market (+41%), closely followed by Austria (+36%)
Cruise holidays are continuing to race ahead in popularity in Europe, with almost 5 million Europeans taking a cruise in 2009
INDUSTRY LEADER’S COMMENT “The European cruise industry has worked hard to position cruising as a mainstream holidayy choice and it is therefore rewardingg to see all our member countries reporting growth during a major downturn in the world economy. However, the industry still faces many challenges including environmental regulations l i and d taxation i b as I hand but h d over the h chair h i off the h ECC to Manfredi M f di Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Chairman of Silversea Cruises, I predict the industry will continue to thrive with still greater choice and diversity for the millions of European cruise passengers.”
David Dingle Chairman, European Cruise Council CEO, Carnival UK
OVERALL CONCLUSIONS BELGIUM 2010 • After a year of stagnation, we are pleased to announce a year of growth with an increase of almost 11,5% • 65.000 Belgians cruised in 2010 • Despite a healthy growth we’ve come short of 5.000 guests to reach last years estimation for the 2010 target. We expect to reach well over 70.000 guests by the end of this year • With over 70% market share, share European itineraries are still # 1 for Belgians, with Southern European itineraries being the absolute favorite (over 50%) • 7-8 nights cruises remain most popular (60% market share), though long & short sailing gained importance
