PRESIDENTS REPORT

COMMITTEE DETAILS ............................................

Hi Members Summers finally here – well it would be if this wind would finally die down. You just have be at the lake early to beat it. Looking at the calendar, this month is going to disappear very fast so hopefully all members have checked all your skis and ski gear and serviced your boats. Many thanks to everybody that turned up to the working bee and also those who have worked tirelessly over the winter months to clean and brighten up the showers. Interclub has already started and at Rotorua we were actually surfing, not ski-ing, and it felt like it was going to snow. If you are interested in ski-ing on club night (Thursday nights) please let Nigel Wilson know and he can add you to the email list. Remember if you want to camp over the summer please email or ring me to book a site so that we can keep it all running smoothly. The social committee are once again organizing events for the Christmas period and New Year. I would like to wish all members a safe and merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you over the coming months at the lake. See you on the water. Steve

Matamata College Just recently from the 17th to the 22nd of November, approximately 140 year 9 Matamata College students attended camp. Based at Finlay Park; our week consisted of many different activities with our designated groups. These activities included water skiing. This was a highlight for many students and for most it was a great experience, as they had never had the opportunity to practice this sport. For those who had never tried water skiing, they began skiing off the “pole” with two skis. For people like ourselves, who had previously learnt the basics, this session was spent attempting to single ski, once again beginning off the “pole”. Three professional skiers gave up five days of their week to teach us the skills and allowed us to use their gear including water skis, wakeboards and their boats at the ski club in Horahora domain. This was most appreciated by all the students and we are extremely grateful that we were able to have this opportunity. We are so thankful for this experience and we enjoyed ourselves because we were able to learn alongside our friends and we had the instructors to help us do so. Everyone participated and those who had more experience were still challenged with added tasks such as the wakeboards and single skiing. On behalf of the year 9 students we would like to thank the instructors, Piarere Ski Club and those who organised the event for the amazing experience.

Club Etiquette— a reminder Hello Piarere Club Members As the warm weather approaches we just wanted to take the time to remind everyone of the Club Etiquette before spending the summer at Piarere club and most importantly having a good time on and off the Water. When we have such a large number of people together there is always going to difference of opinions and we have to respect each other points of view, the key to Piarere’s ongoing success is that we listen and where possible and practical we make adjustment to ensure we run smoothly. If anyone has suggestions for the coming season please don’t hesitate to let us know so just a couple of reminders from the committee: GENERAL All boats must go around the island when leaving the beach area, if returning to a mooring after dropping a skier you must also go around the island. Member Update—Will Leigh This article was in the Cambridge local paper

At just 13, St Peter’s School student Will Leigh is making a splash in the sport of barefoot waterskiing and speeding towards success. Leigh has just returned from representing New Zealand at the Asian Oceania Waterski Championships in Perth. There, the accolades were numerous. Individually, Leigh was runner up in the junior boy’s jump event and third in the junior boy’s slalom, earning him third overall and a bronze medal. In addition, the New Zealand junior team won gold and the open team a silver medal. ‘‘I was hoping to do well, but wasn’t expecting to do quite that well,’’ Leigh said. Leigh, a year 9 student, first began barefoot waterskiing four years ago after he watched a cousin demonstrating it and he was first selected to represent the New Zealand team in March when he was part of the New Zealand junior barefoot waterskiing team which won bronze at the world championships in Mulwala in Australia. Individually, he placed 11th at that event. ‘‘When I saw my cousin barefooting, I thought, ’that’s cool’ and now it’s so cool to be part of the New Zealand team. ‘‘I just love the adrenaline involved in barefooting.’’ And, reaching speeds of up to 70kmh when skiing forwards and 65kmh when he skis backwards, there’s plenty of adrenaline involved. In Perth, the first time he had competed at the event, he said there were positives aside from just the results. ‘‘The water was pretty warm, which makes it heaps easier to ski on. When it’s colder the water is heaps harder.’’ Personally, he thinks slalom is his best barefooting discipline and he thinks that will stand him in good stead as he looks towards his next goal in the sport, representing New Zealand at the World Barefoot Waterskiing Championships in the United States in 2016.
