APPr oP rIAT E E X P os u r E

X = Distance from bottom of door to base of overhang Y = The amount of overhang protection required

Which direction will your exterior doors face? If you want a wood exterior door, it’s imperative to consider exposure. To adequately protect the door and extend its life, you’ll have to take into account your climate and the direction the door will be facing. Then you must determine the amount of overhang needed to protect the door from the elements, which can be obtained by following a simple formula: Y=1/2X (in most cases). for example, if the base of your door to the bottom of your overhang is 10 feet, then the overhang should be a minimum of 5 feet deep. The exposure coefficient may need to be modified based on your climate and the direction your door faces. In some situations, the exposure can be too extreme for a wood door—regardless of overhang. without the correct overhangs, wood doors with a southern, southwestern, southeastern or western exposure will require frequent maintenance. They’re also susceptible to performance problems, such as rapid finish deterioration, color fading, wood splitting, warping, expansion, shrinkage, wood joint separation and water penetration between the mouldings, panels and glass. Improperly protected doors with storm doors and dark colors are also susceptible to large temperature differences (e.g., the door’s surface is 30 degrees higher than the ambient temperature) and temperature jumps (e.g., hot in the day, cold at night). This can cause the door to warp. Please note that doors used in any of the above applications will not be covered under our warranty. A door used in combination with a storm door can cause warping, splitting or cracking due to heat build-up between the two doors. unvented storm door applications are not advised and may result in denial of warranty claims. for patio doors (of any material), placement on certain walls can determine the kind of natural light that enters into your home, or even the temperature inside your home. south- and east-facing patio doors bring in bright, golden light. north-facing patio doors usher in cooler, muted light. And westfacing patio doors let in abundant direct sunlight, as well as the beauty of sunsets. consider that patio doors on south-, southwest-, southeast- or west-facing walls may be more susceptible to heat gain. 60

How to Get Assistance

If you have a problem with your JELD-WEN Premium Wood Door, immediately upon discovery contact the distributor or dealer from whom you purchased our product or contact us directly: Mail:

JELD-WEN Premium Wood Doors Williamson Business Park, Suite A Chiloquin, OR 97624 Phone: 1-877-535-3462 (1-877-JELD-INC) Fax: 541-851-4350 Email: [email protected]

If the claimed nonconformity is warp of a door slab, we may defer repairing or replacing the door slab for a period up to twelve (12) months from the date of claim. It is not uncommon for a temporary warp condition to occur as the door slab adjusts to local humidity and temperature conditions. This deferral will not be counted against the warranty period.

What This Warranty Does NOT Cover

JELD-WEN manufactures and sells both individual door slabs and complete door systems. This warranty does not cover parts or components (e.g., locksets, handles, etc.) not sold by JELD-WEN to the original owner. See your distributor or dealer regarding the warranty on the entire door system and/or these other components. We are not liable for: t Normal wear and tear, including normal wear and tear of weatherstrip; and natural weathering of surfaces or variations in the color or texture of wood. t Problems due to misuse, abuse, failure to follow the care and maintenance instructions; or as a result of any cause beyond our reasonable control (e.g. fire, flood, earthquake, other acts of nature, and acts of third parties outside of our control). t Problems related to: improper finishing of all surfaces (front and back) and edges (top, bottom, and sides) of the door slab and frame; variation or unsatisfactory results in sheen or texture resulting from the field application of paint or any other finishing material. t Failure to provide an adequate overhang; damage caused by extreme temperature buildup where storm doors are present. For general guidelines, see our “Appropriate Protection for Exterior Doors” in our product literature or at www.jeld-wen.com/ resources; for specific information pertaining to your structure, consult your contractor or other building professional. t Warp which does not exceed 1/4" in the plane of the door slab itself; any warp for a 3'6" wide by 8'0" (1067 mm by 2450 mm) high or door slabs wider and/or higher are not guaranteed for warp. t Bow or misalignment in the frame or jamb in which the door slab is hung (if such is purchased from JELD-WEN unmachined and not prehung). t Wood cellular structure failure for wood components other than of AuraLast pine and any components (including pine) that come in direct contact with soil. Note: superficial mold/mildew does not indicate wood cellular structure failure. JELD-wen.com

t Problems related to water and/or air infiltration due to improper assembly; installation errors or flaws in building design and construction; installation must be in strict conformance with the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer of the door entry system. t Structural integrity issues or other problems caused by improper fitting of the hardware or improper sizing of the slab, or other door entry system assembly problems. t Damage or poor product performance resulting from installation into a condition that exceeds product design standards and/or certified performance specifications and/or does not comply with applicable building codes. t Hardware or inserts that are not provided by us, such as locksets, door handles, strikes, etc. t Cost for labor, removal or disposal of defective product(s), installation or finishing of the replacement door or component other than as stated above). t Incidental or consequential damage. Some states/provinces do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so this may not apply to you. Important Legal Information This Warranty sets forth our maximum liability for our products. We shall not be liable for special, indirect, consequential, or incidental damages. Your sole and exclusive remedy with respect to any and all losses or damages resulting from any cause whatsoever shall be as specified above. We make no other warranty or guarantee, either express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose to the original purchaser or to any subsequent user of the product, except as expressly contained herein. In the event state or provincial law precludes exclusion or limitation of implied warranties, the duration of any such warranties shall be no longer than, and the time and manner of presenting any claim thereon shall be the same as, that provided in the express warranty stated herein.

No distributor, dealer or representative of JELD-WEN has the authority to change, modify or expand this warranty. This warranty extends to the original owner (original owner means the contractor/dealer/distributor/purchaser and the initial owner of the structure where the product is initially installed) and is not transferable. The original purchaser of this product acknowledges that they have read this warranty, understand it and are bound by its terms and agrees to provide this warranty to the original owner of the structure into which the product is installed. Should state or provincial law preclude no transferability, then the warranty period is effective as applicable up to five (5) years from the date of initial purchase. 1

ins tallati o n a n d m ai n tenance Improper storage, handling, finishing or installation of any JELD-WEN Premium Wood Doors may result in severe damage to them and may void the warranty. The following guidelines will help maintain the high quality of these doors.

®

Storing and handling 1. Store doors flat on a level surface in a dry, well-ventilated building. Doors should be kept at least 3-1/2" off the floor and should have protective coverings under the bottom door and over the top. Covering should protect doors from dirt, water and abuse, but allow for air circulation under and around the stack. Avoid e xposure to direct sunlight. 2. D o not subject interior doors to extremes of heat and/or humidity. Prolonged exposure may cause damage. Buildings where humidity and temperature are controlled provide the best storage facilities (recommended conditions: 30% to 50% RH and 30°F to 90°F). 3. D o not install doors in buildings that have wet plaster or cement unless they have been properly finished. Do not store doors in buildings with excessive moisture content—HVAC systems should be operating and balanced. 4. D oors should always be handled with clean hands or while wearing clean gloves. 5. D oors should be lifted and carried when being moved, not dragged across one another.

Finishing preparation Failure to comply with these guidelines will affect your warranty 1. T o ensure uniform moisture exposure and dimensional control, all surfaces including the top and bottom must be treated equally. 2. B efore applying first finishing coat, remove all handling marks, raised grain scuffs, burnishes and other undesirable blemishes by block sanding all surfaces in a horizontal position. Sand entire door lightly with 180 grit sandpaper. To avoid cross-grain scratches sand in the direction of the grain. 3. A fter sanding, clean entire door with a slightly damp cloth, removing all dust and foreign debris. (Avoid caustic or abrasive materials.) 4. If necessary, adjust components before finishing. (Wood panels can “float.”) Carefully realign with a wood block and hammer. 5. B efore finishing, hang the door. Then remove to finish properly. Do not finish during or after high-moisture periods. Door must be dry before finishing. 6. A void dark colored finishes if door is exposed to direct sunlight. Many dark color pigments absorb the UV and/or IR wavelength of sunlight and raise the surface temperature of the door. Any color that raises the surface temperature of the door more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit above the ambient temperature is considered too dark for use on exterior doors. Please note that the surface temperature also depends on exposure, see page 60. This will reduce the chance of warping and veneer checking.

7. Certain species of wood contain chemicals that react unfavorably to some finishes or to foreign materials in the finishing system. Whenever possible, test your finish prior to application and eliminate the use of steel wool on bare wood, avoid rusty containers or any other contaminate. 8. Softwoods like pine, fir, and hemlock take stains differently and may appear uneven or blotchy after staining. If the door is to be stained, a wood conditioner or stain control should be applied prior to staining to promote a uniform appearance and avoid sharp color contrasts or a blotchy appearance. Note: as the sealer allows for even stain application, it also reduces grain contrast and the depth of stain penetration. If grain contrast is desired a pre-stain sealer or wood conditioner should not be used. As with all finishes, test prior to application. Talk with a paint professional regarding this application.

Exterior finishing A. STAIN-AND-CLEAR FINISHING 1. Stain the door using a quality oil or alkyd-resin-based stain. 2. Finish the door with a quality exterior solvent-borne or waterborne polyurethane. Most quality exterior finishes require a minimum of two coats. Refer to finish manufacturer instructions. A marine-grade varnish is recommended on all wood exterior doors. Note: If a pre-stain sealer was not used, waterborne finishes increase the potential of veneer splits and grain raise. 3. A ll six sides must be finished prior to final installation to comply with warranty. 4. E xterior stain-and-clear finishes perform better if protected from sunlight and moisture. Inspect finish once a year and refinish as needed. 5. Natural grain and color variations are normal and not considered manufacturing defects. B. PAINT FINISH 1. Seal door with a quality oil-based primer and two top coats of an exterior oil-based or all-acrylic latex paint. 2. E xterior door finishes perform better if protected from sunlight and moisture. Inspect finish once a year and refinish as needed. 3. A ll six sides must be finished prior to final installation to comply with warranty. ®

Caution: JELD-WEN Premium Wood Doors can’t evaluate all available paints, stains or application requirements. Consult your paint dealer for systems best suited for your region and exposure. Always use top-quality finishes and follow instructions on finish labels.

Interior finishing

Cleaning and touch-up

A. STAIN-AND-CLEAR FINISHING

1. Inspect all wood stile and rail doors prior to hanging them on the job. Repair noticeable marks or defects that may have occurred from improper storage and handling.

1. Finish the door with a quality solvent-borne or waterborne polyurethane. Note: If a pre-stain sealer was not used, waterborne finishes increase the potential of veneer splits, highlighted joints and grain raise. 2. A ll six sides must be finished prior to final installation to comply with warranty. 3. Natural grain and color variations are normal and not considered manufacturing defects. B. PAINT FINISH 1. Seal door with a quality oil-based primer and two top coats of an interior oil-based or acrylic latex paint. 2. A ll six sides must be finished prior to final installation to comply with warranty.

Installation 1. T he utility or structural strength of the doors must not be impaired in fitting to the opening, in applying hardware, in p reparing for lights, louvers, plants-on or other detailing. 2. Use a minimum of two hinges for 1-3/8" doors up to 80" in height, three hinges for all 1-3/4" doors and all doors from 81" to 84" in height, and four hinges for doors over 84" up to 96" in height. 3. Clearances between door edges and door frame should be a m inimum of 1/16" on the hinge edge. For latch edge and top rail, the clearance should be 1/8" (+0", -1/16"). 4. A ll hardware locations, preparations for hardware and methods of hardware attachments must be appropriate for the specific door c onstruction. Templates for specific hardware preparation are a vailable from hardware manufacturers, NWWDA or DHI. 5. P ilot holes must be drilled for all screws that act as hardware attachments. Threaded-to-the-head screws are preferable for f astening hardware to nonrated doors and are required on fire-rated doors.

64

JELD-wen windows & doors

2. Field touch-up shall include the filling of exposed nail or screw holes, refinishing of raw surfaces resulting from job fitting, repair of job-inflicted scratches and mars, and final cleaning of finished s urfaces. Field repairs and touch-up should be the responsibility of the installing contractor. 3. When cleaning door surfaces, use a nonabrasive commercial cleaner designed for cleaning wood door or paneling surfaces that does not leave a film residue that would build up or affect the surface gloss of the door finish.

Adjustment and maintenance 1. E nsure that all doors swing freely and do not bind in their frame. Adjust the finish hardware for proper alignment, smooth operation and proper latching without unnecessary force or excessive c learance. 2. Review with the owner/owner’s representative how to periodically inspect all doors for wear, damage and natural deterioration. 3. Review with the owner/owner’s representative how to periodically inspect and adjust all hardware to ensure that it continues to f unction as it was originally intended.

JELD-wEn wInDows & Doors

About JELD-WEN SINcE 1960, when JeLd-wen began as a small oregon millwork plant, we’ve been dedicated to creating reliable windows and doors that are energy efficient, beautiful and worry-free. JeLd-wen is proud to be a member of the green Building initiative (gBi). gBi is a nonprofit organization that accelerates green building practices by promoting environmentally progressive approaches that are practical, affordable and accessible to mainstream builders, architects and developers. as a member, we help state and local homebuilder associations develop local green building programs that are appropriate for their regions. these programs then help builders develop homes that are energy efficient, healthier to live in, and better for the environment. we also believe in supporting our communities. one way we do this is through the JeLd-wen tradition foundation, which provides charitable funds to educational organizations. we’ve been the title sponsor of the JeLd-wen tradition on the pga tour’s Champions tour since 2003; we’re a proud partner of the pLaYerS; and we’re the official window, door and millwork provider of the pga tour.
