Amsterdam Pre-Cruise Option April 11 to 14, 2016

The historic heart of Amsterdam, lined with tree‑shaded canals and stately 16th‑ and 17th‑century merchant houses, is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and the perfect prelude to your cruise. A guided city tour acquaints you with its landmarks and famous monuments. Walk through Jordaan, the most picturesque neighborhood in Amsterdam and a center for art, music and antiques; and visit the historic Anne Frank House museum. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the impressive Rijksmuseum, 17th-century Royal Palace in Dam Square or the comprehensive Van Gogh Museum. Spend two nights in the Five‑Star Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel, ideally located alongside a quiet canal in the heart of the city. U.S. Monday, April 11 Depart the U.S.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands Tuesday, April 12 Arrive in Amsterdam and transfer to the Five‑Star Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel located in the historic city center and just a short walk from Central Station. Pass through the heart of this romantic city with its charming tree-lined canals and the Kalverstraat, the main pedestrian shopping street. Built in 1648, Amsterdam’s Royal Palace in Dam Square was a symbol of Holland’s power and prestige during the Dutch Golden Age and is still used by the royal family on official occasions.

Amsterdam Wednesday, April 13 After breakfast in the hotel, begin the guided walking tour of picturesque Jordaan, Amsterdam’s most famous neighborhood. Originally developed as a working-class district for immigrants, this 17th‑century neighborhood, with its narrow streets and small canals, is now a center for artists, musicians and antique dealers. On the border of Jordaan, near the beautiful landmark of Westerkerk, is the Anne Frank House museum where the young girl hid for more than two years during World War II. Frank’s original diary is on display along with other salvaged documents, objects and photographs. Millions of visitors from all over the world have been moved by the experience of visiting this small but impressive museum. The afternoon and evening are at leisure. Amsterdam Thursday, April 14 Enjoy Amsterdam’s charms on your own this morning. Later, join the participants of the main travel program and board a private boat for a canal cruise through the heart of this historic city. Pass beautiful medieval churches and 16th- and 17th‑century gabled row houses that were built for merchants and today are designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following your canal cruise, embark the m.s. Amadeus Elegant.

Brussels Thursday, April 21 After breakfast aboard the m.s. Amadeus Elegant, transfer to Brussels and enjoy a panoramic tour through this thriving capital. See the 16th-century St. Michael’s Cathedral, the primary church of Brussels; the world-famous Atomium, built for the 1958 World’s Fair and modeled after an elementary iron crystal; and view the Royal Residence, built in 1772. Also observe Louise Square, a major thoroughfare; stately Royal Square, Parliament and Palace; the Triumphal Arch, which was built to celebrate 50 years of independence; the Art Nouveau houses of Victor Horta, a UNESCO World Heritage site; and the heart of the European Union. After lunch in a local restaurant, experience the culture of the city on a walking tour with visits to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Grand Place in the Old Town, displaying three different eras of architecture, the magnificent Town Hall and charming Market Square. In the very heart of the city, see the Royal Palace, home of Belgium’s monarchs since the country gained its independence in 1830. Visit historic Waterloo and Napoleon’s Last Headquarters museum in Plancenoit. Accommodations for two nights are in the centrally located Hilton Brussels Grand Place Hotel.
