Barcelona Pre-Cruise Option April 13 to 16, 2016

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and one of Europe’s most fascinating cities, is set on a plain rising gently from the sea to a range of wooded hills. Its cosmopolitan center has all the highlights of a modern city, but its old center constitutes one of the greatest concentrations of Gothic architecture in Europe. Throughout the city is some of the world’s most avant-garde and enchanting architecture—Antoni Gaudí’s surreal spectacles, which became such a cultural phenomenon that UNESCO named his buildings World Heritage sites in 1984. Barcelona has been a groundbreaking center of art, architecture and style since the late 19th century and proudly displays the marvels of masters from the likes of Picasso to Susana Solano. Accommodations for two nights are in the ideally located Five-Star Majestic Hotel and Spa Barcelona. U.S. Wednesday, April 13 Depart the U.S.

Barcelona’s Gothic Cathedral of Santa Eulalia stands where a fourth-century Roman basilica once stood until it was destroyed by attacking Moors.

Barcelona, Spain Thursday, April 14 Arrive in Barcelona and transfer to the Five‑Star Majestic Hotel and Spa Barcelona. The afternoon and evening are free for independent pursuits in the city. 05/07/15-1

Barcelona Friday, April 15 After breakfast at the hotel, begin a panoramic tour of the highlights of the city. Travel along Passeig de Gràcia, one of the city’s main avenues, to see the Poble Espanyol—or Spanish Village— and the Old Town, the original heart of Barcelona which maintains its medieval heritage and Gothic architecture. See some of Gaudí’s impressive buildings along the way, including Casa Milà, an apartment and office block with an undulating gray stone facade. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Basílica de la Sagrada Família, the design of which Gaudí took over in 1883, applying his architectural and engineering style, which combines Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. At the time of Gaudi’s death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Even though the magnificent structure is still under construction and is not expected to be completed until 2026, it remains one of the world’s most distinctive buildings and evokes the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages. The afternoon and evening are at leisure. Barcelona/Montserrat Saturday, April 16 Travel into the gentle hills of the Penedès wine region along the coast of the Mediterranean, where grapes have been cultivated since the Phoenicians first arrived. The art nouveau architecture of the wineries is as much of a draw as the cava, Catalonia’s sparkling white wine fermented in the traditional champagne method. Visit Codorníu Winery, winemakers since the 16th century and today a fine ensemble of modernist buildings designated a National Historic Monument. Tour the vast cellars via small electric train, and enjoy a tasting of their acclaimed cavas. Continue to the stunning setting of Montserrat, said to be the inspiration of Wagner’s opera Parsifal. Visit the Benedictine monastery, founded in 1025 and home to an ancient statue of the Virgin Mary discovered among the mountains in 880 A.D. Pilgrims still come from all over Christendom to kiss the Black Virgin (La Moreneta), regarded as Catalonia’s patron. Today, the monastery is home to over 80 monks who still abide by the sixth-century Rule of Saint Benedict. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before returning to Barcelona to embark the m.v. Tere Moana.

Benedictine monks have lived in the monastery perched among the rocky crags of Montserrat for nearly one thousand years.
