President’s Letter

ONE BAD APPLE..... HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY.… Those are a couple of phrases we use when we have an experience with an individual, or a fruit, or a vegetable, to describe what happens in a group when the force is disturbed by negative energy or a rotten spot. We focus not on how wonderful the other individuals are, or how flavorful the fruit is, or how tasty the rest of the veggies were, but on the fact that one incident has spoiled the entire experience. Sometimes we do that when we paint. How often I have heard someone reply to a compliment with a negative comment. "Oh yes it turned out except I should have used a different color" or "I wish I had done this in that corner instead." I know that when I finish a painting, it is always (or almost always!) my favorite painting....until I look at it for a few days and wish I had done something different. How difficult it is for us as humans to accept that life has its bad apples, that not every painting will turn out the way we had envisioned, or even that life will often throw a monkey wrench into the plans we had established. Maybe we had planned to get into the latest Continued on Page 2

show so we could finally get our signature membership but, for some reason, our painting was not accepted. Maybe we see just that one annoying aspect of someone's personality instead of the 157 good traits they have. How do we change our day to day outlook? I know that one thing I am trying to do is look at life differently. Maybe because I just had another birthday. Maybe because some of my friends are no longer on this earth. Whatever it is, I know that I want to learn to accept the fact that life is not about perfection but to celebrate the things that make me change my attitude. Did that color make you think about using it the next time you paint? Maybe what you did in that corner will look fantastic on the painting you are working on now. Maybe the trait in that person is what makes them great at what they do. In any case, put the bad apple out for the birds...maybe someday the seed will grow into an apple tree. It doesn't matter if the glass is half full or half empty....as long as it has wine in it!

Programs by Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair May Program:

June Program:

Eric Fetsch demonstrated the method for “Painting Like Monet” using the Integrated Palette technique. He explained the concept used by the Impressionists and demonstrated along with six volunteers. The Integrated Palette may use any combination of colors, evoking both night and day, and lights and darks. He laid out a palette using the following six colors: Indian Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Raw Sienna, Terre Verte and Costal Fog as the neutralizing color. The volunteers used simple leaf paintings to demonstrate what could be achieved.

Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair, has gotten our member, Rob Grishow, to do a presentation for our June program. He will speak about and show us Photoshop image cropping, editing, online submissions, and tell us about some of his unique work. Rob will have handouts to give us. He will also try to find some free apps that are simple for people to use and we can pick his brain for answers to our questions.

The Integrated Palette uses a method that produces soft combinations of colors and allows a range of grays and tones. The selection of colors is consistent and recognizable in each artist’s work. One poignant stroke of color often appears in each work as a counterpoint to the softness and light that is the result of the Integrated Palette. To learn more, visit Eric’s website: http:// ericfetsch.com/lets-paint-likeimpressionists

Rob has been painting since he was young, first learning how by watching Bob Ross on PBS with his dad. Starting with acrylics, he gravitated to oils and eventually watercolor, which really seized his interest. He attended the Colorado Institute of Art on a full scholarship and has been a graphic designer ever since, only recently diving back into watercolors. His previous work was much more realism based, but currently, a more flowing, abstract, and impressionistic feel stirs his passion.

Skipping to the USA. The only job offer I received at Penn State was from a campus interview with Hallmark cards. I was his last meeting for the day, and he was eager to go fishing. That offer determined the course of my life and let me know God was at the helm. After eight years at Hallmark, I went on to become the art director at Current, Inc. Some of my most memorable events, other than getting married and raising two sons, include first place in the Kansas Watercolor Society Exhibition, and acceptances into Watercolor USA and the Rocky Mountain National. Somehow, I was included in many other national shows, at the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art and printmaking exhibitions. “Wolves”

I joined the PPWS when we were less than twelve members and met in each other's homes. What a wonderful organization it has become. Watercolor is still my first love, but I find oil challenging also. Presently, I show at The Boulder Street Gallery and am represented by the One Sevenine Gallery in Sedona, AZ. I have an art ministry at Eastside Church, where I do worship painting, art parties and have used art in our prison ministry. I also teach classes and hold workshops when time permits.
