Piezo injection systems for clean, economical and effi cient diesel engines Making diesel engines fit for the future: our high-quality injection system solutions for passenger and light duty vehicles as well as our engine management systems for commercial vehicle applications help our customers to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency, thus making mobility more environmentally friendly. Piezo Common Rail injection systems (PCR) comprising of the key components injector, high pressure pump and engine control unit are, along with software and system integration, the core competences of our Business Unit Engine Systems. Combined with our modular engine management platform EMS 2 and highly efficient pump, our piezo injectors ensure an optimized combustion due to precise fuel injection and atomization. The piezo technology offers therewith clear advantages compared to conventional injection systems:

q Fulfillment of upcoming emission standards regarding nitrogen oxides and soot particulates which will apply from 2014 (Euro 6 and US Tier 2). q Reduction of CO2 emissions by further 3%. q Enhanced performance with lower fuel consumption and low noise level.

Engine control unit EMS 2

With our million times road-proven technology and our new Piezo Common Rail direct drive injection system, we ensure the future of diesel engines – especially in countries with increasing mobility. With enhanced driving dynamics and lower consumption, today’s diesel engines contribute to the careful use of resources and improvement of the CO 2 balance.

More power, lower fuel consu mption – injection systems for gasoline engines Our innovative system solutions are making gasoline engines more reliable, powerful and efficient. We are pursuing several strategies in parallel and are in an excellent position to meet our customers’ demands with our innovative port injection, solenoid and piezo direct injection systems. Port injection – proven technology Particularly in the high-volume segments port injection continues to dominate the market because of its attractive costbenefit ratio. Specifically for this type of engine, we have developed the DEKA VII injectors – with reduced weight, extended range of operations and improved performance. Extremely fine atomization improves the combustion process, thereby reducing emissions of the engine. Adaptability to different applications is a key property of the DEKA VII family: all three body lengths can be combined with any nozzle length option and retain identical characteristics. Furthermore, a wide range of spray forms can also be adjusted to suit different intake manifold geometries.

Piezo direct injection – taking fuel economy to new levels Since 2006 the trend setting piezo technology has also been implemented with gasoline engines – particularly for higher displacement engines. By using piezo direct injection we facilitate a stable combustion in a stratified lean operation, thus achieving the greatest possible fuel savings in an extended engine operating range. Compared to conventional port injection, this can result in fuel consumption reductions of up to 20%. In addition to our injector know-how, our comprehensive system solution portfolio also includes efficient high pressure pumps, generating fuel pressure of up to 20 MPa (200 bar), and intelligent engine management control units. The modular and scalable engine management platform, based on our EMS 2, allows us to meet challenging quality targets despite ever shorter development cycles and the constantly growing number of variants. Furthermore we also offer injection systems for alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and ethanol, which can make a contribution to reducing global CO2 emissions.

Worldwide support and comprehensive expertise in software and systems integration, calibration and simulation complete our product portfolio. Deka VII injector

The efficiency bonus: turbocharger technology

The ecology bonus: exhaust gas aftertreatment

Particularly in conjunction with our high performance direct injection technology, the turbocharger offers great potential for downsizing: smaller and more economical gasoline engines with virtually identical performance.

Our modular building block-design for emission reduction

The market demand for more fuel efficient and small displacement gasoline engines is rapidly growing. The solution of this task lies in turbocharging – it provides a performance increase of combustion engines while decreasing engine displacement and achieving fuel savings. We see excellent future growth potential for the turbocharger and therefore push forward its development intensively, together with our customers. In combination with our highly developed direct injection technology, the turbocharger allows more than 15% lower CO2 emissions compared to conventional intake manifold engines – thus creating gasoline engines with consumption levels which converge towards modern diesel engines. We consider the turbocharger as an integral component of the engine management, together with our advanced engine electronics, fuel injection technology, sensors and further components, such as general purpose actuator GPA, to achieve maximum engine efficiency. The development of our turbocharger technology has already reached an advanced stage – functional prototypes are performing successfully in testing. Series production is scheduled for vehicle generations starting in 2010.

Our product portfolio includes numerous technologies which result in significant emission reduction, particularly when several systems are interacting. These technologies include engine management systems, transmission control units, injection systems, hybrid drives and their associated sensors and actuators. In addition, we offer innovative exhaust gas aftertreatment technologies, including exhaust fuel injectors for an improved regeneration strategy and SCR systems for selective catalytic reduction for passenger car applications. SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) functions, by injecting an aqueous urea solution into the diesel exhaust stream. This chemical process within a dedicated SCR catalytic converter leads to a significant reduction of NO X emissions. The data from engine catalytic converter and environmental is collected by sensors and analyzed by the engine electronics which is the basis for calculating the optimum injection volume of aqueous urea solution.

14

Our commercial vehicle controller solutions for diesel engine management optimize fuel efficiency while simultaneously reducing emissions. They support future oriented exhaust gas aftertreatment concepts such as SCR and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and are available both as engine control units and as control units for exhaust gas aftertreatment (SCR control units). The interaction between both technologies allows the fulfillment of today’s Euro IV and V emission legislation and enables the achievement of future emission limits (Euro VI, EPA10, JP09). For the control of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) rates, we have developed an on-site Engine Control Unit (ECU) that integrates the EGR valve and control algorithms in one EEGR control unit for this demanding, high temperature application. 15

Economical and environmenta lly acceptable driving: hybrid and electric drive syste ms With its potential for fuel savings and emission reductions of 25% and more, plus an extra boost of torque, hybrid drives already represent interesting alternatives to straightforward combustion engines. We foresee outstanding future prospects for hybrid and electric drive vehicles.

Our technology makes it quicker and more economical to integrate and apply electric drive systems – providing this drive concept with the decisive impetus for successfully establishing itself in the market.

As the first European supplier, we have been manufacturing production version hybrid systems since 2003 and have been single-mindedly pressing on with developing this technology ever since. As a consequence, we can now provide a modular system which contains all the basic electrical components of a hybrid drive:

Power electronics The inverter is at the heart of the electric drive, controlling the transfer of energy between battery and electric motor (up to 150 kW). The DC/DC converter transforms the energy storage system’s high voltage into the vehicle power supply voltage. Our Integrated Powertrain Management (IPM ® ) system is used as the central control unit for fundamental hybrid functions such as operational status management, energy management in start and stop traffic situations and for regenerative braking.

q Electric motors q Energy storage units

q Inverters q DC/DC converters

Our modular system is based on scalable components which can be adapted to all vehicle classes from passenger cars to commercial vehicles – and also to vehicles with electric and fuel cell drives. All the components can be flexibly adapted to vehicle-specific requirements, e.g. by integrating inverters and converters within a single housing. This flexibility is the great strength of our modular design; it allows us to shorten the time to market, optimize costs and ensure consistent quality. Power electronics

The essential components of our modular system are:

Electric motor In collaboration with ZF-Friedrichshafen AG, we supply electric motors and hybrid drives which are fully integrated into the drive train. For other applications, we offer side-mounted starter/generators and axle motors. Lithium-ion battery Range and electrical output are the decisive factors for the success of electric drives. This is why one main focus of our work is directed towards the development of vehicle-optimized lithium-ion battery systems. They vary in the number and arrangement of their storage cells and are currently available in the 18 kW to 120 kW power output range.

We’re gearing up for the future: transmission control systems for all types of vehicles As the leading international supplier of automatic transmission system control units, we provide our customers with solutions for all types of transmissions and all-wheel drive applications. Today’s transmission electronics optimize driving comfort, reduce fuel consumption and emissions from vehicles of all classes, which is why our product portfolio ranges from high-end systems to costoptimized solutions for the growing markets. We develop and manufacture electronic control units for the whole spectrum of advanced automatic transmissions: q Stepped automatic transmissions q Continuously variable transmissions q Automated manual transmissions q Double-clutch transmissions q Transfer cases q Four/All-wheel drive applications In 2007 alone, we supplied around 6.5 million transmission control units – a figure which impressively reflects our position as technology leader in this field. We offer solutions ranging from external control units to mechatronic units, including the sensors and the electrical and hydraulic actuators, which are fully integrated within the transmission.

Control unit for all-wheel drive application

Gear change in milliseconds: The double-clutch transmission (DCT) This innovative transmission technology has been in series production since 2003; with its smooth gearshifts and no shuddering or traction torque interruption, the DCT combines the ease of an automatic transmission with the dynamism of a manual gearshift, saving fuel and reducing emissions. The heart of the DCT is Continental’s control unit, fully integrated within the transmission – one of our development highlights, of which we are proud and which proofs our expertise and innovative strength.

Precise detection, fast and reliable actuation: intelligent sensors and actuators The primary objective of our developments is to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles of all classes. Our intelligent sensors and actuators, in conjunction with advanced engine management systems, make it possible to develop genuine low CO2 drives – dynamic diesel and gasoline engines which not only satisfy current emissions standards but which are also admirably prepared to meet forthcoming regulations well into the future. A few examples from our extensive portfolio are: Cylinder pressure sensor The sensor calculates the dynamic development of pressure in the cylinder during the whole combustion process and is then able to provide the engine management system with the data it needs to set the optimum engine management parameters within the closed-loop combustion control system. We supply the sensor either as part of a glow plug for diesel engines or as a stand-alone sensor – e.g. for high-performance engines and gasoline engines. High pressure sensor The sensor measures the fuel pressure in direct injection gasoline or diesel engines. Pressure is measured directly via a piezo-resistive silicon element on a steel membrane. The advantages of this sensor technology include precise measurement over a broad range, resistance to aggressive media and flexible calibration of the transmission function – programmable on the integral sensor. NOX sensor This sensor measures the nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas and supplies data for exhaust gas aftertreatment in direct injection diesel and gasoline engines. Especially when included as part of the SCR system, it helps the engine to comply with the Euro 5, Euro 6 and SULEV emissions regulations. It also supplies data for the on-board diagnostics. Examples of actuators developed by Continental:

Smart coolant pump

General purpose actuator

Exhaust control valve

On-demand engine cooling – Smart Coolant Pump (SCP) The pump controls the coolant flow dynamically and as required so as to maintain the optimum engine temperature. Since the pump is driven independently of the engine, it supplies just the cooling capacity actually required at any moment. It can be installed in any suitable position. General Purpose Actuator (GPA) An electrical actuator with an integrated position sensor and, if required, integrated electronics. The GPA can be used as an adjusting mechanism for numerous applications – e.g. for continuously and precisely adjusting the manifold flaps or the turbocharger vanes and valves. Exhaust gas recirculation valve – Exhaust Control Valve (ECV) Compared to conventional exhaust gas recirculation valves, our rotary ECV provides significantly more precise control of the high exhaust gas recirculation rates in direct injection diesel and gasoline engines. As a consequence, it helps the engine to comply with ever more stringent emission regulations. 21
