-1-

To open PowerPoint click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003. A blank presentation should appear on the screen. Under the Getting Started side bar on the right, you can create a new presentation or open an existing, saved presentation. By clicking Format > Slide Design, the right bar will change to a number of examples of different templates.

-2-

After selecting a template, you can also change the color scheme by clicking Color Schemes on the right bar.

You can change your Design Template or Color Scheme while you work on your project as well. After a title page, you can create more slides. To add a new slide, click Insert > New Slide. The sidebar will now show different Slide Layouts with different combinations of places for images and text.

-3-

There are different views in PowerPoint that can be useful for different purposes. •

Normal View – To view outline or slides, and your current slide. You can also add notes and text.

Slide Sorter – Best for moving, adding, and deleting slides.

Slide Show – Runs your PowerPoint. If you have a slide selected, the show will start at that slide.

Notes Page – Useful for presenting. View slides and notes.

To access the different views, you can either click View > and select a view. Or use the toolbar on the bottom left of the screen. Normal View Slide Sorter View Slide Show (runs the slideshow from the current slide)

To delete slides from your PowerPoint, you can select a slide in any view, and press delete. To delete multiple slides, hold the Shift key and select slides in order. Or hold the Ctrl key and delete multiple random slides and press delete. You can also move slides in different order. When moving many slides, it is best to use the Slide Sorter view. Just select the slide(s) you would like to move, click and drag them in the desired position.

-4-

To modify the background of a slide, select Format > Background Here you can change your background color. By clicking the drop arrow and Fill Effects, you can select a Gradient, Texture, Pattern, or Picture to be your background. If you have already selected a Design Template, check the box to Omit background graphics to show the change you want to make.

To insert a picture as your background, select Fill Effects > Picture > Select Picture and select the picture or graphic you wish to use. To insert a Text Box into a slide, select Insert > Text Box. You can then click on the slide where you would like your text to appear. Formatting the text is similar to Microsoft Word. The toolbar at the top of the page can be used to change the text type, size, style and alignment. If the toolbar is not there, select View > Toolbars > Formatting.

-5-

To change the text throughout the whole PowerPoint, select Format > Replace Fonts. You can also insert graphics a number of ways into a PowerPoint slide. To add an image from clip art, select Insert > Picture > Clip Art... An option to search the Clip Art Gallery will appear on the right side bar. You can also insert an image you have saved on your computer by selecting Insert > Picture > From File… You will then have to locate the picture you would like to insert.

There are also animated images in the clip art. By selecting Results should be: Movies only, you can find different animated images. The animation will not be viewable in the Normal View. You have to be viewing the slide show to see them. You can then resize or move the image to wherever you would like. To keep the image proportioned when resizing, hold the Shift key while you resize.

-6-

You can add transitions that will occur in between slides in the Slide Show View by selecting Slide Show > Slide Transition. Depending on your number of slides, it might be easiest to apply these in the Slide Sorter View.

By clicking any of the transitions listed, you will see a preview of the transition on your slide.

You can modify the speed of the transition (slow, medium, or fast). You can also add a sound effect to the transition. You can Apply to All Slides, if you want the same transition and setting to occur between every slide in your show. If you do not see a preview of the transition when you click it, make sure the AutoPreview box is checked.

-7-

To add animations to your slides, select Slide Show > Animation Schemes... Here there are a number of different options you have to animate your show. You can also add animations by selecting Slide Show > Custom Animation…

1. Select the text box or image you would like to add an animation to. 2. Click Add Effect. 3. Select the type of animation you would like to apply. 4. Select any more text boxes or images you would like to animate on the slide.

You can change when the effect starts, the direction, and the speed of the effect. Effect will occur in the order they are added. If you need to re-order your effects, you can click and drag them into order or select the effect and click the arrow to re-order. From here you can preview your slide by selecting Play, or view your Slide Show.

-8-

You can add sounds to PowerPoints for different purposes. You can add a sound to one slide or have a sound play throughout your whole show. You can add sounds of .wav file type, .mp3 file type, or music from a CD. Some other file types work as well.

To insert sounds, select Insert > Movies and Sounds > Sound from File… You will then be asked if you want to play the sound automatically in the show, or when you click the sound icon.

You can run spell check on PowerPoint similar to Microsoft Word. You can also press F7 on the keyboard to run spell check. To run your PowerPoint show from the beginning, you can view it in Slide Show View, or press F5. Anytime you would like to stop the presentation, press the Esc key.

-9-

You have four options to print your PowerPoint presentation. •

Slides – will print each slide on a page.

Handouts – choices of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 9 slides per page. Choosing 3 slides per page will allow lines on the right of the slides for note taking.

Notes Page – as mentioned above, will print one slide per page with the corresponding notes for that slide.

Outline View – will print just the text from the slides, not the slides themselves.
