A future-proof communication solution must integrate the whole utility operation …

Communication systems cover increasingly broad aspects of companies’ activities. Once restricted to dealing with internal power operations, information systems are now playing a key role in all aspects of business relations. For modern power utilities, a high-tech concept and reliable communications services, interoperability and the exchange of operational information are essential for the control, supervision, and administration of power system operations.

… it has to match growing needs …

To satisfy all demands made of communications, networks have to handle increasingly large volumes of data – particularly in local area networks with fast connections between each other and with services related to WAN connectivity. Just a few years ago, digital fiber-optic networks with nearly unlimited capacities were supposed to work wonders for power utilities. Although this technology has enabled new possibilities, the main focus was often not on efficiency.

… by emphasizing high efficiency in every single part of the system.

It has become very clear that “working-together technologies” are the key to success. And companies that are able to master an increasingly diverse range of solutions will be the leaders of the future. Proven technologies such as Power Line Carrier (PLC) will therefore continue to be part of the overall picture. With a portfolio starting from PLC up to high-speed optical transmission systems, Siemens integrates the network according to our customers’ specific needs – a future-proof concept from the application point of view and from that of economics.

Siemens is the best partner to power your communications – and to make use of increasing opportunities.

In the final analysis, the highest return on investment will be delivered by a network that achieves the highest levels of efficiency in all subareas. For this reason integrated communications network management is vital for digital broadband networks. Siemens has acquired expertise in mixing all relevant technologies together to propose the best future-proof solution. For utilities this means meeting the increasing operational, technical and commercial opportunities presented by deregulated markets – including offering commercial communications services.

Power Line Carrier The technology: Siemens delivered its first commercial PLC systems more than 80 years ago. Thanks to the continuous development of this technology, it remains as important as ever. Over long distances with relatively low data volume, PLC is still hard to beat in terms of cost-effectiveness. Used in effective combination with broadband technologies, it forms the backbone for power network protection.

Our product: PowerLink provides the highest communication standards for power network protection. Smooth integration into other types of communication technology such as fiber-optic or satellite links opens the door to a variety of new features and functions. With its ability to switch from analog to digital transmission, it can work with both transmission modes at the same time.
