Power-Over-Fiber Kit

From the world leader in power-over-fiber components, the Lumentum PPM-500-K is a photonic power module kit capable of delivering up to 500 mW of electrically isolated power over distances up to 500 meters. The PPM-500-K combines a high-efficiency Lumentum fibercoupled laser diode and electronic drive circuitry in a single, enclosed aluminum module. At the other end of the fiber, a photovoltaic power converter (PPC) delivers electrically isolated power at a convenient and minimum 3.2 V (4E) or 5.2 V (6E).

Key Features • 100% isolated electrical power

The PPM-500-K kit includes one PPC. At 500 mW of power output, the PPC will deliver a maximum operating current of 160 mA (4E) or 125 mA (6E). The optimum operation of the kit is at 100 – 400 mW at which a suitable voltage regulator (not included) can deliver consistent voltages of 3.3 V (4E) and 5.0 V (6E).

• Built-in triggering option

The drive circuitry incorporates an efficient switching power supply which reduces heat-dissipation requirements by more than 60% compared to previous PPM products. Electrical power, laser power control, and power monitoring are all accessed via a single 6-pin connector. For requirements above 500 mW, kits can be combined in parallel. With its efficient design, more than one PPM-500-K can share an external heat sink to save space.

• Minimum voltage: 3.2 V (4E), 5.2 V (6E) • Up to 500 mW output; kits can be combined to deliver 1000 mW and above • FC standard (ST as an option) • Field-proven reliability Applications • Remotely located electronics, data logging circuitry, and sensors • Utility-based, high-voltage AC/DC current measurements (>100 kV) • Test labs requiring 100% EMI immunity • Environments requiring spark-free delivery of electrical power • Enhanced isolation for IGBTs serving noisy or sensitive electric drive controls

Laser Driver Characteristics Laser driver circuitry provides the proper current to the laser in direct relation to the set voltage. This ensures a continuous and stable light output. The maximum light output at full current is 2 W. Modulation can be superimposed to enable transmitting triggering functions.

Isolated Electric Power Delivery Characteristics The PPC receives laser light transmitted over fiber and converts it into useful, 100% isolated electrical power. The maximum power output, Pmax, occurs at the point where the product of current and voltage is maximized. This is the ideal point of operation and, with proper voltage regulation, the output from the PPC can be optimized.

Detailed PPC Operation The maximum electrical power output from the PPC is shown as a function of input laser power levels. For the PPC-6E, the power output can be seen to be almost linear until approximately 1 W of incident laser light. For higher light levels, resistance effects decrease the available voltage, leading to an overall decrease in the conversion of light to electrical power. Therefore, the overall power is no longer linear although the current from the PPC continues in a linear fashion as can be seen in the table. The most optimum operation of the PPC is with an incident laser light level of 1 – 1.5 W.

Optical Power (W)

Since the PPC is designed to operate with multimode optical fiber, it is necessary to use a fiber patch cord between the laser and driver fiber pigtail and the PPC. A minimum length of 10 meters and preferably 50 meters is recommended to (a) scramble all the modes and (b) reduce any risk for back reflection. Under no circumstance should the fiber pigtail be connected directly into the PPC; this fiber has a different core diameter and numerical aperture and is designed to couple equally well into 62.5, 105, and 200 µm core fiber.
