MISTRAL Seaplane operation at French Riviera, Biscarrosse May 2010
CHALLENGES: MISTRAL
The mistral usually blows from the north or northwest, but in certain pre-alpine valleys and along the Côte d'Azur, the wind is channeled by the mountains so that it blows from east to west

CHALLENGES: WIND AND SEA STATE
Close to the coastline, current sea state does not correspond to the current local wind

CHALLENGES: CORROSION, Origin •While airframe structure of a seaplane is built out of aluminum, it is held together with stronger steel bolts and hinges and bearing, and the amphibious landing gear is made with steel to withstand the heavy loads. •These dissimilar metals generate an electrochemical process where the aluminum becomes the reactive anode and the steel becomes the cathode, and it is all conducted by the electrolyte water. •The more salt in the water the better the conductive properties. CHALLENGES: CORROSION, Treatment
Prevent the electrolyte from forming a conductive path between the dissimilar metals: • at every 100 hr and annual inspection • on bare metal •Fresh water rinsing after every water landing •Continuous Greasing and Waxing •A sacrificial anode is attached to the floats and kept conductive (Zinc plates) Seaplane operation at French Riviera, Biscarrosse May 2010

Types of Water Landing Zones •“Hydrobase” •Permanent “Hydrosurface” •Temporary “Hydrosurface” (New Creation)

CHALLENGES: REGULATIONS
Creating a New Zone “Hydrosurface” •Determine your zone, Carte Marine WGS 84 •Specify your usage of your hydrosurface •Study related laws (arrêtés, décrets, décisions) •File a request (Préfecture Maritime) •Request a “Habilitation” (Préfecture de police)

CHALLENGES: REGULATIONS
LIMITATIONS OF USING A HYDROSURFACE •VFR only •300 m off coastline •350 m diameter free of boats and swimmers •Within France •During TKOF/LDG no overflying of boats or persons (conglomerates) below minimum allowed height (500 ft) Seaplane operation at French Riviera, Biscarrosse May 2010

AEROMER, The Concept AEROMER is based at Airport Cannes-Mandelieu and is aimed at “re-introducing” the seaplane to the place where seaplane has once started, namely the French Mediterranean. Firstly through sport activities (ACCA), later in offering commercial seaplane operations. Seaplane operation at French Riviera, Biscarrosse May 2010
